Twisting The Night Away

My life is in shambles. It's Saturday night and I'm immersed in obscure twist recordings of " The Man On The Flying Trapeze" and "Sweet Rosie O'Grady". Sigh...... Join me, will ya?

"Fats and The Chessman" are the culprits here and listed as the official band of record.

If the idea of "Red River Valley" sung by a guy with a Yiddish accent doesn't provoke automatic giggles, then don't bother going to Big Ten Inch Record for an inspirational collection by Mickey Katz.  I myself am currently digging "Mississippi Schmootz".

The Boa Constrictor Ate My Wife Last Night

We rarely review CDs here at PCL just because, well, we're too busy running around finding junk to amuse you. But when Heathen Angel Todd Westover (ex-Bellrays) contacted us about reviewing Simon Stokes' latest CD, who could say no? Not me. "Stokes is loved by outsiders, biker rockers, folk enthusiasts and social workers across the continent" says part of the press release and I'm at least one of those (you guess.) When I posted a pic of me and Simon at one of his gigs last summer a friend wrote incredulously, "THE Simon Stokes? Nighthawks? Black Whip Thrill Band Simon Stokes?!" Yes, the same one. Could there be another? "Miniskirt Blues/Flower Children" Simon Stokes?" made even more famous by The Cramps and Iggy? Yes, THAT one. Who could make it up? Not me.

It's sort of a given that I would-and I'm guessing many PCL'ers will also-like any record with songs like ""Hanging Out With Cretins," "Down for Death," and the incredible opener "Hey You," (seeing him do these live, while people passed around Salvador-Dali melting-clock cupcakes, children running underfoot as balloons hovered in the air, while a menacing sunglasses-clad Simon paused to give two fingers to the audience, was, as he would put it in his own words, "Stranger Than Fiction." I wondered just what sort of dreams those kids had.)

If you're lucky, you too, will have them. You can have a listen and buy from cdbaby or itunes so do it. Or you'll be depriving yourself "One Night of Sin," and much, much more.
PS. There's some techno DJ out there named "Simon Stokes" (the nerve!) so don't get confused by on youtube. He does not look like this.

Hollywood Palace-Ready "Hair"

It's one thing to hear the homogenization and Velveeta-ization of counterculture music by Anita Kerr or the Alan Copeland Singers, but here we see Hair composer Galt MacDermot bastardizing his own work, with comic results. It's all good to go for Dean Martin's Golddiggers or the Hollywood Palace chorus!

Had the Welkian-sounding chorus done the "prisoners in niggertown" line of 3-5-0-0 I would have included that, but instead you get Walking in Space.

Door-to-door gynecologist rings the bell and says, "At your cervix!"

Selected pages from the 32 page book, Pardon My SEX, Doctor by Vic Herman. There's no publication date, but it appears to be either the late 50s or early 60s.

During a career as a cartoonist, illustrator, author, teacher and painter, Vic Herman created many advertising characters such as "Elsie the Cow" for the Borden Company, "Johnny" for Philip Morris, "Winnie the Wac" for the United States Navy, and "Sad Shad" for Johnson & Johnson. He was the author of over 52 books and had cartoons and magazines in many national magazines. He was also a teacher for the Boards of Education in Los Angeles and San Diego. Source: "Who's Who in American Art", 1993-1994, p. 519

The luckiest woman who ever lived

"In Spanish, Rubirosa means a red rose, but to me it's a black eye," she said, adjusting a big black patch over her right eye. "He said to me, 'If you do not marry me now I will marry Barbara Hutton.' I said, 'That is a smart idea.' He said, 'Why won't you marry me?' and I said, 'If I must tell you the truth, I am in love with George.' [This refers to George Sanders, the actor. George and Zsa Zsa are in the midst of getting a divorce. "She is discarding me like a squeezed lemon," George says.] And so then Rubi hits me. I am the luckiest woman who ever lived. He might have broken my head or my nose.… A man only beats a woman if he loves her. I always loved George, the love of my life. After our divorce, George and I will be beaus." Rubirosa denied that he had proposed to Zsa Zsa, recently anyway. Miss Hutton, when asked to comment on Zsa Zsa's announcements, said, "I am a lady."

Marianne Faithfull / Hier ou demain (1967) [HQ full-length version]

Was It Love? - The Royal Cavaliers

I'm jazzed that the bass player is my brother-in-law! Cool.

The Royal Cavaliers were a 60's rock group from Kutztown, Pennsylvania. The band featured Kevin Snyder on guitar, Steve Haring on keyboard, Randy Hoffman on bass, Richard Gaugler on drums and Randy Schlegel on lead guitar. They cut two demo tracks of original tunes, "Was It Love?" and "I'll Try Again", both produced by engineer/entrepreneur Clay Barclay in 1966. Barclay recorded many Eastern PA bands in a recording studio based in his parents' Orwigsburg, PA home and later relocating to Reading, PA. His facilities captured the top regional acts, producing over two dozen highly-coveted 7-inch singles.

Also check out their other song I'LL TRY AGAIN.

Both songs appeared on a CD compilation, "Eastern PA Rock, Part Two" released and is still available on ARF! ARF! RECORDS. Check out their site, it's filled with a lot of cool and rare stuff, if you like it, buy a CD or two and support the small labels!

Vivian Maier, Photographer and Nanny

The Chicago Cultural Center is hosting an exhibit of the recently discovered work of Chicagoland street photographer Vivian Maier.  Maier supported herself as a nanny until her death in 2009, at which time the body of work (numbering in the tens of thousands of negatives, an undeveloped film) was discovered. She lived in the Rogers Park area during the same era that I did....who knows, maybe I'll see some photos of me at the exhibition!

Thanks to Jack Mord of the Thanatos archive who led me to these exceptional photographs.

Charlie Rich - Mohair Sam (1975) (He had a hit with the song in 1965)

Wikipedia: Charlie Rich "...at the CMA awards ceremony for 1975, when he presented the award for Entertainer of the Year, while visibly intoxicated. Instead of reading the name of the winner, who happened to be John Denver, he set fire to the envelope with a cigarette lighter, before announcing the award had gone to "My friend Mr. John Denver.""

By the way: Can anyone else see that he looks like a cross between Steven Seagal and Curt Russel?

Fatima Robin - Si, Si Papa (from I Successi Italiani, 1957)

When is a bat, not a bat? When it's Lyle Waggoner!

WOW! Lyle Waggoner looks really good as Batman and probably would have been the better choice. The producers went with Adam West because he was so awkward and bizarre (even in real life) and they wanted the series to be ultra-campy. Lyle definitely made it more serious. Peter Deyell makes for a terrible Robin. Check out the screen test footage below.
