Happy New Year!
As tradition says here at PCL on New Years Eve I'm posting a photo of myself from past times.
This was taken somewhere in Stockholms Skärgård back in '76.
Looky! I'm all thumbs up. 2009 will probably turn out to be a a good year.
Anyway, I'm wishing you all a Happy New Year! Hopefully I'll talk to you more often in a near future.

Where Did You Come From
Sit down, dear, we've been meaning to have a "special" little talk with you...."we", meaning me, Art Linkletter, and Evil Pain Clown.
Myself, I'm 7 1/2 minutes into Art's 10 minute lecture and he's JUST NOW getting to talking about the little opening underneath the hen's tail...when's he going to get around to talking about "the darndest things"? Thank goodness the future of the species was left up to hormones and not to information from Art Linkletter.

My mummy put sugar on me
Though they had many hits and made a groovy movie (see clip below) Os Incíveis were not the Brazilian Beatles (that title was held by The Brazilian Bitles). But when did the Beatles, Brazilian or otherwise, ever do a song called "My Mummy Put Sugar On Me", or a pop version of "Hi-Lili Hi-Lo"? Huh?

Shakespeare "Howls"
Bottoms up!
(Shakespeare "Howls" Cocktail Napkins)
Holiday Psychosis and Frozen Snow Balls
Image stolen from here.
As a bitterly cold winter descended upon the lake effect Midwestern region of the soul, Bat Guano went into WIDR for one last SwaG! broadcast of 2008.
Here it is, your gaily wrapped holiday gift. What is inside? Is it Mr. Guano playing music of holiday cheer? Bitter arrangements mocking the very notion of this celebration? Many non-Xmas songs of funk, punk, jazz, sass? Monologues of Mr. Guano speaking of the cold and offering listeners a chance to “spoon” with him for warmth?
Like all presents, its contents are best kept a delightful surprise! Click on it to unwrap.

Early Christmas Greetings.
(Image courtesy of Big Rock Candy Mountain.)
The madness of Christmas is descending soon, my friends, but before the holiday whisks me away from PCL-dom for a couple of weeks, I wanted to share a few seasonal links with you all.
• First, a Flickr set of vaguely disturbing photos of Santa with crying children. (via Monkeys For Helping.)
• A list of 10 Unintentionally Scary Santas. (via Monkeys For Helping.)
• And finally, probably the most amazing accomplishment in the history of humankind, this Korean rap Christmas album. (via Waxidermy.)
Have a wonderful holiday, friends!
Wrong Side of the Art.
(Man, John Saxon would star in anything, wouldn't he?)
Anyway, if you fine folks are familiar with the trashy movie poster goodness at Wrong Side of the Art, now's the perfect time to get acquainted. They've just moved to a new host with a new URL, so hopefully there won't be any more hassles from The TOS Man. The content is a little thin right now, but the mysterious, unnamed admin promises that the archives will be rebuilt very soon.
5 times mahna mahna
Performed live on a popular prime time network variety show, three days after the debut of the Sesame Street version. This is fairly similar to the one they did seven years later on The Muppet Show, but this version has live audience reactions instead of a laugh track.
Episode 101: April 25, 1977. Sung by Bip Bippadotta (Jim Henson) and the two Snowths (Frank Oz), complete with Kermit's introduction and commentary by Waldorf and Statler. High quality video.

Dizzy's Diamonds
I'm finding that a pot of yerba mate tea and Dizzy Gillespie in an Afro-Cuban mood are a really fine antidote to a gloomy day and the last vestiges of a nasty head cold. Music courtesy of Six-by-Six, where you can find many more jazz goodies as well.

It Is Our Minds That Are Different
(Photo from here. Sharpe's kid's personal stash.)
In this episode of radio program SwaG!, the middle of the program within the program, "Green Slime," is another Coyle and Sharpe bit, one of many often broadcast on this radio program. Bat Guano is envious of Mal Sharpe and Jim Coyle for being able to do what they did when they did.
You just can’t screw with people like that anymore.
But in his own way, as a disk jockey, not man-on-the-street, Mr. Guano tries.
In this episode of SwaG! we have Italian crooners, Napalm Death (going out to the girls who wanted to hear kitties mew “Jingle Bells”), Faith No More’s skiffle version of “Let’s Lynch the Landlord” and other weirdo sounds.

Aspen Magazine, December 1966
In December of 1966, Andy Warhol was the guest editor of the multimedia magazine "Aspen"--which contained a copy of Warhol's newspaper "Plastic Exploding Inevitable", a flip book of his movie "The Kiss", and a flex disc of The Velvet Underground backed by a love raga by the musical director for Timothy Leary’s “LSD Religious Celebrations”. You can see--and hear--highlights of this magazine here.

I Am Woman, and I Have a Matched Set of Pans Hanging in My Depressing Kitchen
Do we really want to get inside the brain of a 1960s housewife through humorous song? If we do, we can hear a cha-cha about golf widowhood, and the best way of getting baby spit-up out of suede or something, at least I think that's what she was singing about.

Too Much Coffee In This SwaG! Broadcast
It is obvious in this episode of SwaG! that Bat Guano has had too much coffee.
People often ask: “Is Bat Guano on drugs on air?” Yes. Caffeine. And he won’t admit that he has a problem.
It is how he does three hours of radio, that you can put on your computer device from here.
Fruit Labels
A couple of years ago I was priviliged to view the Art of the Orange gallery at Los Angeles Public Library and got to view pristine examples of label art, with accompanying explanations of how the grade of the fruit was embedded in the imagery on the labels (like the King David above which meant grade "A" fruit)
I found (accidentally again looking for proposal imagery) this wonderful collection of images from Cratelabelsonline which has good sized images, and a large collection of the classic California and West Coast agricultural marketing images.
Check it out - you won't regret it.

Haunted houses
Look at this commercial:
Scroll down to the bottom for the coloring book.
I also grew up near the Haunted Castle at Great Adventure.
Now, this was in the 70s, when the actors could touch you. So, we're looking at 2 firetraps where people could grab at you. That sounds...well, dreadful.

Cheeta: Exposed!!
Since I was the one earlier this week who brought up the topic of Cheeta, known as the world's oldest chimp and veteran of Tarzan movies, I feel I must be the one to break the news of this story in today's Washington Post that pretty much puts the entire Cheeta saga in question. It sounds like no one bothered to check the claims of Cheeta's first owner, and despite evidence to the contrary everyone seems to prefer to believe the myth.
Which brings me to the most important question of all, what are we going to do with the extensive collection of authenticated Cheeta paintings we have displayed in a climate controlled east wing at PCL headquarters, hanging amid the Red Skelton clowns?

Cheer you up at the Pin up club
In the early eighties the former off-shore Dutch radiostation Veronica did it's first attempts to make it as an official broadcasting society. In order to obtain a definitive broadcasting license the team had to seduce enough people to become a paying member of their society. And how does one go around that? By making outstanding shows naturally.
