Outside the Lines

Well of COURSE there is a blog devoted completely to the history of crayons. You can see many swell boxes from past and present from a man who proudly proclaims that he has the largest crayon collection in the world. I, for one, am inclined to believe him.

The Bowling Song

Keglers of the world unite! Golf season is kaput and it's time to head to the poor mans country club to toss some splashers and avoid the dreaded "Grandma's Teeth". Our new team name this year - "Knock Whitey Down" is sure to strike fear into the hearts and minds of our feeble opponents.

This little ditty by Joe Montgomery will be our official team song.

The filth and the fury

What insights to the early days of punk — or the artist-manager relationship — might music historians glean from this caricature of Malcolm McLaren?

University of York archeologists have given the graffiti-covered walls of the Denmark Street flat once occupied by the Sex Pistols' John Lydon the Lascaux cave treatment:
'The tabloid press once claimed that early Beatles recordings discovered at the BBC were the most important archaeological find since Tutankhamun's tomb.

'The Sex Pistols' graffiti in Denmark Street surely ranks alongside this and - to our minds - usurps it.'

The researchers refer to the site as 'anti-heritage', because it contradicts what agencies and heritage practitioners typically value.

They say: 'We feel justified in sticking our tongues out at the heritage establishment and suggesting that punk's iconoclasm provides the context for conservation decision-making.

'This is an important site, historically and archaeologically, for the material and evidence it contains. But should we retain it for the benefit of this and future generations? In our view, with anti-heritage, different rules apply.'

Julie Newmar in SEDUCTION OF A NERD

Julie Newmar is a toy company CEO named "Mother" who is trying to lure a nerdy toy designer (Wally Cox voice of Under Dog) to work for her. When her son (Victor Buono) throws a series of prostitutes at him to no avail, Mother realizes that the nerd wants HER, because she reminds him of his mother! Music by Quincy Jones.

From 1970, this film was also known as "Mother" and "Up Your Teddy Bear". Great scene with Victor Buono dressed as a prostitute!

Oh Kay!

Kay Thompson wrote the book "Eloise", which is all I need to know about her (and if you don't know the book Eloise, you need to be sklonked in the kneecap). I suppose she was also in the movie Funny Face, and had a famous nightclub act too. Vinyl Whores led me to a lot of stories about her life and performance clips, you may enjoy it, too.

Super Freak

Classics are classics for a reason. The words and music of Rick James as interpreted by Big Daddy.

Chief of the Apache

I found this wacky song on a compilation album (K-Tell or something) out of a box with water damage which was delivered at Radio Zwolle some years ago. This Old Shatterhand who hasn't released any other songs apart from this one and its b-side "Thank You" must have been an undercover Dutch artist, judging by the accent. Also when I googled I found this labelscan with "Oscar Harris productions" on it. Harris also being the co-writer of the song, is a pretty wellknown Dutch-Surinam singer and producer. I don't think it's Harris himself singing here. It might be Alexander Curly, but I'm not sure...

A Great Big Bowlful

It's a great big heaping bowlful of sugary goodness, vintage cereal commercials of such nutritionally empty cereals such as Mr. T, Pink Panther, C3PO's star Wars cereal, and Nintendo cereal.
