Blue Jeans (1975)

Everyone! Sing along! "Blue..... Jeans..... hot..... pants.... why?...... why'd you move your hips so near my face?"

Gloria Guida portrays Daniela, a seventeen year old street -walker by the nickname of "Blue Jeans".

I've Got a Pain in My Sawdust

The oddest thing about this record is not the falsetto of Tiny Tim, or his choice of obscure tunes, but the bizarre and seemingly random laughter and crowd reaction from this (supposedly) live record, "Concert in Fairyland". You can hear him imitating each of the Ink Spots in his version of "If I Didn't Care", romancing those with canine-hearing in "Indian Love Call", and resurrecting the long-forgotten "I've Got a Pain in My Sawdust". Truly an effective way to rid your home of those last New Years Eve party stragglers who refuse to leave.

So Wrong, it's Even More Wrong...

...all these years later. Love Jimmy Savile's awkward intro.

A few nights ago, a friend and I were discussing this song and he said, "God...what was he thinking? And it was a hit!" Skin-crawling, to this day.

Music to be played before midnight

This is one of my favourites in the Hammond genre: Dorsey Dodd playing songs like: c'est si bon, St Louis Blues, El Negro Zumbron, Tea for two and even A whiter shade of pale (here called: senza luce).
If you don't have any boxing to do this evening, maybe you can listen to this album, but make sure you do it before midnight, otherwise the whole effect will be spoiled:

Terry Gilliam's The Christmas Card

An oldie, but a goodie. I'd seen clips of this before, but never the whole thing.

JingleBell Rock on handbell

No, I didn't say that I don't like Christmas! I love it! I like the abundance of food and drinks, seeing my family once a year: my elderly aunts and uncles, the sweet nieces from Portengense Brug and my dirty cousins from Amsterdam, going to a church packed with people taking flashlight pictures of their family-members in the choir and speaking of which ... most of all.... I think the music this time of year is great, don't you agree? Especially all those bells! I can't get enough of them.

Don't forget to see the other handbell-clips as well. They're a real treat!

Wow - Fleischer Christmas!

Holy crap - Charlie Parker.gunslinger, etc, etc. contributor swac posted a link to the Fleischer Brothers online Museum which has a wunderbar collection of Christmas cards.

No More Xmas Music, Unless It Contains the Words Spazz or Burrito

....and is sung by an amorous mouse puppet. The playlist includes En un burrito orejón, and the incredibly festive Spazzacamino, I don't know what holiday Spazzacamino represents, possibly one that has something to do with dysfunctional classic vehicles, but it's a swell tune. And on the same blog, you can get some holiday tunes from the very excellent Los TNT, including Escuchad, Escuchad which turns out to be Jingle Bells, but better.

Barbara Lynn - You'll Lose A Good Thing

Barbara Lynn - You'll Lose A Good Thing (Flash Video 02:58). Thank you, Stan.

.

It's always disappointing to buy an album and get it home, only to discover the record inside doesn't match the cover. That happened recently at Ghost-Capital, but the story here is much worse than usual. Here's the deal....

"the jacket advertises the song "kot mai fai daeng (law of the "red light" [period])" by phanida sutthicharoen... and yes, that's "period" as in menstruation.. thus the blood-soaked cover: bizarre!"

So if anyone has a copy of this record, I'm interested in hearing it, especially if you are able to translate the lyrics.....

Dick and the King.

What an auspicious day! For it not only marks the birthdays of benevolent Swedish monarch Dante Fontana and genius American composer Frank Zappa. It is also the 40th anniversary of the day Elvis Presley showed up unannounced at the White House asking to be made a federal drug enforcement agent. He was eventually whisked inside to be introduced President Richard Nixon in one of the more surreal summit meetings between politics and pop culture. The National Archives has an interactive online presentation about the event, filled with plenty of Flash and other modern internet trickery.

American Song Poems

My awakening to the song poem genre is long overdue. After stumbling onto the genius of Norm Burns, a few weeks back, I've seen the light and can now call my pathetic life complete.

Back in 2005, WFMU's Beware Of The Blog posted American Song Poem MP3s: MSR Madness, Volumes 5 and 6. The collection is a testament to the bottom feeders of the musical food chain - the song poem musician. Taking inane and sometimes very personal lyrics sent in by aspiring "songwriters and poets", these Mozarts of the Maudlin set this often insipid drivel to music. God bless them.

For your consideration, here are a few ear bending cases in point.
The Real Pro's - Teenage Queen

Kay Weaver - Womans Liberation

Rodd Keith - Let's Go Savage You and I

Man-Weasel or Mongoose?

Well, I don't know about you, but I am surely interested in the tale of a talking mongoose that captured the imagination of 1930s psychics and spiritualists, as well as the general public. The Dalby Spook, aka Gef, was said to be coaxed into polite conversation with the residents of Dalby on the Isle of Man. I'm sure I would enjoy the company of a talking mongoose, and would be plenty interested in what he had to say, how about you?

Hard Head

Norm Burns does little to conceal his misogynistic tendencies and rage in this light, country shanty. Just in time for the stressful holiday season.

Brain.......Not.......Working.......Properly.......

I can't read and I can't write down
I don't know a book from countdown
I don't care which shadow gets me
All I've got is someone's face
Money goes to money heaven
Bodies go to body hell
I just cough, catch the chase
Switch the channel watch the police car
I can't read shit anymore
I just sit back and ignore
I just can't get it right, can't get it right
I can't read shit I can't read shit
When you see a famous smile
No matter where you run your mile
To be right in that photograph

Yayo Lives!

It was pretty heartbreaking yesterday to discover that one of my favorite blogs by Yayo Salva had been removed. Yayo has been an incredible source for obscure and out-of-print pop music from around the world -- I can't imagine my current collection and playlists without him. Fortunately, a few of his blogs still remain: Voces del Folclore and Viejos Estilos.

Visit and enjoy while you can, my friends.

Milwaukee Bus Passes - an assload of 'em. Such variety!

C'est Magnifique

Boot Sale Sounds has one of those incredibly loopy clangy percussion extravaganzas that you either love or loathe. He apparently loathed it because it's not even separated into cuts, it's all just one side of the record. I chopped it apart with a pair of dull left-handed scissors and offer one of the tunes below.

C'est Magnifique - Skip Martin

Rebel Music

This atrocity made the rounds some time back with various junk music purveyors. I must've been drunk that month. The good folks here at PCL are more than happy to pick up the scraps and share it with our minions.

The James "Rebel" O'Leary family were a local outfit out of the bustling metropolis of York, Pennsylvania who were well known for plugging in wherever and whenever duty called. This take on the Ernest Tubb standard, "Walking The Floor Over You" is proof positive of their prowess.

Galeria of Failed Dance Crazes Part One-Derful: Do the Woodbine Twine!

From Chicago Soul by By Robert Pruter:
"The Jerk (the dance) was not very popular among blacks, at least in Chicago. When the did do the Jerk, they generally combined it with the Twine which was similar but with more fluid and sweeping motions".

Fluid and sweeping sounds like work to me, I'll stick with the Woodbine Twine which directs you to "arch your back and stomp your feet, make yourself comfortable..." ....and I stop with the "make yourself comfortable" part, and grab a frosty beverage in the process. Cheers to the Woodbine Twine!

Farewell, Bill Gannon.

Harry Morgan died today at the age of 96, and all the tributes are focusing on his role as Col. Potter in "M*A*S*H." And rightly so, I suppose, but I'll always have more fond memories of him as Officer Bill Gannon in "Dragnet." I nosed around for a good clip to post here, but everything on YouTube is very Jack Webb-centric. Still, I did turn up this little piece of fluff...

Honest to God, this album absolutely grated on my nerves and I couldn't delete it quickly enough, which probably means since I'm so totally out of synch with blogging anymore, it will probably be universally adored. So have at it, I'm back listening to Cacka Israelsson.
