A Killer Halloween.

With Halloween coming up, it's time to celebrate all things scary. But why bother with made up scares when there are so many real life people to be scared of? Like serial killers, for instance.

Jack the Ripper, the original ladykiller...

David Berkowitz, the ("Son of a bitch!") Son of Sam...

Jeffrey Dahmer...

...and Ed Gein, the inspiration for all your favorite slasher flicks, who apparently sings as well.

Bates Motel - Ex-quisite Interpretation

My email this morning told me that Gay Carrington had become a subscriber to my YouTube Channel and as my sweet palsy-walsy Ange had previously, in a private email told me, I am in fact, an attention whore, so I figured I'd see what Gay had to offer. Haunting. Direct. Amusing. Stylish. and f*cking WEIRD.

I'd like to offer Gay's rendition of this paraphrased reinterpretation of some footage from Psycho it seemed perfect for Hallowe'en on myriad levels.
Please as usual, no comments.

Bobby Marchan

Have been long drawn to the vocal styling of Bobby Marchan. His unique, expressive phrasing was a feature of some of my favorite Huey Smith and the Clowns cuts such as "Havin A Good Time" and "You Don't Know Yockomo"

The backstory on his colorful life as a transvestite and 1950's drag queen is proof positive that New Orleans and it's music scene was the birthplace of acceptance and tolerance. Tenets which America would be well served to revisit. The original American Babylon.
His version of Big Jay McNeely's "There's Something On Your Mind" just oozes the soulfulness of the era and was a hit on the R&B charts.

Queer Music Heritage published a wonderful tribute piece upon his passing in 1999.
Enjoy.

Kuen Kuen Lueng Lueng "Iron Man"

Bangkok 101 sheds some light on this Luk Thung Underground hit and the artist known as Sroeng Santi.

"He called his music ‘Luk Thung Underground,’ states radio DJ Dan Buriram, one of the first to push luk thung on the airwaves. “He came up with this name himself, not the press. He loved the bass guitar and Marshall amps! He liked Shadow music too. He did a track called ‘Pu Ying Yai’, which means ‘the great person’. When he sang live he would wear a black leather jacket, and t-shirt. At the peak of the performance, he’d take off his shirt and sing ‘Nam Mun Pang‘ (‘Expensive Gasoline’). He would then burn his t-shirt at the same time as singing this track, and sometimes even his instruments! That is why he called himself Luk Thung Underground.”

"The track is taken far beyond being a mere cover of ‘Iron Man’, as Sroeng offers a strange meditation on the waxing and waning of the moon and the sun, before comparing it to the Thai economy with costs of foodstuffs only going up and never coming down! The song is carried along by a tough backbeat that always produces a mild shock for first time listeners. It’s this little documented, but vital strand of Thai music that is featured on our forthcoming Finders Keeper’s compilation ‘Thai? Dai! The Heavier Side of the Luk Thung Underground’".

EVARISTE

" Often regarded as the French Kim Fowley, Evariste is a well-kept secret needing to get out there NOW. Genius, creative and with a very poisoned language in the lyrics of his songs. A mix between ye ye, garage and hallucinated experimental rock. Evariste is probably one of the most interesting musicians from the French 60s rock scene, though maybe too weird to have really had that recognition from the public and media at the time! And Michel Colombier is involved in these recordings too! This first time ever reissue of his works includes his complete discography, thats two Eps and one single. Remastered sound, and limited to 500 copies. "
A portuguese label (no smoke records) released this LP a few days ago. Shame on the french record industry!

A banker in a tired suit
Is counting in his head
He's standing in your overcoat
He's lying on your bed
President gas is tap dancing
For the banker he's a thief
He isn't very honest
But he's obvious at least

You and I are walking past yeah
Having lost our way
We don't count our money
We are giving it away
Yeah giving it away

Don't shoot at the pianist

I know what it is to be shot at. It happens all the time as I try to get my droodle cd's played in local pubs. Onésimo Grosbois is the nom de plume of pianist Francois Vermeille. He probably knows all about it. MFP even called a compilation of his "Ne tirez pas sur le pianiste". Listen to his version of the classic Istanbul.

The Love Bug

Theme song to the movie: What's Up Nurse
Sung by Tony Burrows - Lyrics by Dee Shipman - Music by Roger Webb
Move written and directed Derek Ford

If you are a fan of British comedies like Benny Hill and the "Carry On" series, then this movie from 1977 will prove to be a lot of fun! Sadly, the American issue of the movie seems tot have several chunks of the film cut out. Worth tracking down to see the entire film. Funny, sexy and often cute, the movie is a strong R, but nothing outrageous. Great party strip scene where it's "hilarious" that the trollish looking guy is trying to dope the girls drinks with some "love juice" to get them acting "wild". And the not to be missed "man with jam jar stuck up his behind" scene! Nothing a broom handle, elbow grease and some plaster of Paris can't solve!
"I told you to prick his boil!"

It's here.

Halloween Hits Vol. 8.

The Drunken Master Sam the Spliff fights hostile ninjas in Shaolin Dolemite.

R.I.P. David Hess

David Alexander Hess started out his incredible career as a songwriter and musician. At the age of 15 he was the first to record Otis Blackwell's "All Shook Up". Later picked up by Elvis.
His stage name was David Hill.

He also penned (with Aaron Schroeder) "I Got Stung" for Elvis and then also co-wrote and recorded "Speedy Gonzales", later made famous by Pat Boone. He now called himself David Dante.

He then went on to record 2 solo albums for Kapp Records.
At the end of the 1960s he co-wrote the rock-opera 'The Naked Carmen' with John Corigliano.

In the 1970s he also started to act in movies. His first major achievement was as Krug Stillo in Wes Craven's 'The Last House on the Left' in 1972. He also penned and recorded the score for the movie.

In 1977 he starred in the italian crime 'Hitch-Hike' as the psychotic and sadistic hitcher.

In 1980 he had a seat in the director's chair himself and directed 'To All a Good Night'. Apparently a typical 1980s teenage horror flick.

He also starred or participated in several other horror and/or cult flicks, such as Ruggero Deodato's 'House on the Edge of the Park'; Craven's 'Swamp Thing' and in later years 'Zodiac Killer'.

The Monitors are your friends

While scanning newspapers of my childhood I spotted this ad from a movie I don't recall ever seeing. The Monitors was based on sci-fi writer Keith Laumer's novel and produced by Second City's Bernie Sahlins.
The Monitors take over earth, imposing order till a restance movement forms to return the life of sin everyone was accustomed to; with Guy Stockwell, Susan Oliver, Larry Storch, Avery Schreiber, Keenan Wynn and Ed Bagley.

Did he mention that he's a robot?

Pencilmania

This Tom and Jerry cartoon (the human versions, not the cat and mouse) is an opportunity for the animators to have fun with the medium. There is no specific plot. One of the boys uses a pencil to create a myriad number of animated illusions that could only work in a cartoon. For example, a short vertical line is drawn, which when held by both ends suddenly becomes a saxophone. When played, the notes pop out of the bell of the instrument to suddenly grow legs and transform into ducks. After the song, the saxophone itself quickly follows suit and becomes a goose. The entire short consists of these disjointed, though often creative and humorously unlikely events. (imdb)

Children songs from Nepal

"The songs in this album are sung by students of Swarnim High School: Angu, Temmdo,Chetana Manandhar, Sonika, Sumitra, Rushila Chitrakar
Music Composer for these songs are Ramesh"

I'm a little puzzled by the description of the background of this, but I understand these songs used to be common stuff on Nepalese primary schools for a period of time. If you are interested, there is this internet hyve kinda thing called facebook. Those of you assimilated by this collective appearently can find out all about the Swarnim School.

Anyway, these recordings are lovely.
