" ... Don't let the bright magenta colored cover of this album deceive you. Many of the tracks on this release consist of haunting ambient music, punctuated by a variety of percussion instruments, deep bass, electronic synths and strange sound effects. On the whole, Umiliani creates an atmosphere that is bleak, desolate, and mysterious. ..."

"I was quite proud of the fact that the booklet that came with the album stated that I had copy #137 of 500. Oh yeah, chicks dug me!
...
It's hard for me to now objectively evaluate an important artifact of my youth, but I can tell you that I used to be endlessly fascinated by songs like the mutant disco of David Jackman's orgy of overdubbed Casios, and the one vocal number on the album, The Legendary Pink Dots' "The Hanging Gardens," which was seemingly the greatest tune that Syd Barret never recorded. Colin Potter's "Rooftops" was sheer Moogy bliss. ..."

Sing, Sing, Sing
Sing, Sing, Sing from Paul Anka's first album. He also does a version of Jambalaya on the album, with less success. But really, can anyone find me a BAD version of Sing Sing Sing?
John W. Bubbles
Music from the effervescent half of the vaudeville duo Buck and Bubbles, who was also the first Sportin' Life in Porgy and Bess.

The Obscene Carrot
Found in an innocent bag of baby carrots, this rude little root vegetable dares to live life free of inhibition!
Special thanks to my brother who had the wisdom to photograph this and send it to me!
Blue Friday
Well, I have completed my holiday shopping for the PCL Ladies......this lovely Evening in Paris gift set was only $2.98 at my local Jupiter Five and Dime store. Probably my gift to the PCL guys will be Hai Karate soap on a rope, or just a handful of dollar bills for tipping their favorite exotic dancers. Shopping completed!

On the Heels of Dick
Julie Newmar crashing on My Living Doll. Get it while you can- Jack Chertok Productions has been making the thugs at Viacom take down these clips, despite his corpse a moulderin' in the grave, lo these 15 years. Julie, however, yet lives and breathes. God forbid they release it on DVD so she could make a few lousy shekels, maybe.

Kristian Hoffman
Kristian Hoffman has had a long and quite fabulous, almost Zelig-like career, beginning in the early 70’s, where as a high school student in Santa Barbara, California, he hooked up with a young Lance Loud, often appearing as Loud’s best pal on the first ever reality TV show - An American Family.
His newest is called "Fop" (I love it) - this is the first I've ever read that spans his entire career here at Boogie Woogie Flu. Fittingly written by James (The Hound) Marshall, you can download some choice picks from Fop, as well as Kristian's previous bands, The Mumps and James Chance and The Contortions.
PS. Betcha didn't know this:
Hoffman is also a talented graphic artist who designed the famed New York Dolls logo (their name written in lipstick under a bend over nubile, goth girl) that appeared on the inner sleeve of their debut LP and millions of t-shirts ever since
Give Him the Ooh-La-La
Take a tip from Blossom Dearie, we gals can make men give us stuff and not give us traffic tickets if we only give them the ooh-la-la! Who knew.
From Zona de Jazz
This One Goes Out to the Teens
Who says PCL is just a bunch of pre- through post-middle aged hipster-wanna-bes who are out of step with today's youth culture? This hep platter comes from The Swingin' Shepherd from Canada, that bastion of cutting-edged-ness, no less. What could be groovier? Possibly the cuff links, or this rendition of Darktown Strutter's Ball, a big hit when Alf Landon was in the third grade. Swing it, Daddy!

Doris Day with Her 6 Poodles c.1952
The most popular dog of the 1950s in the US.
A wonderful dog by the way. I have one. The standard is sturdy, even tempered, loyal, hypoallergenic, and a makes a great guard-dog. I don't know why everyone feels the need to cross-breed this animal, with labs., etc. It's possible the breed got a bad rap from the high-strung toy size. Or perhaps, they became a problem in the 50's from in-breeding, and poor handling by snobs who sequestered them away.

Sam Spence - NFL Films
Sam Spence is an American composer whose work is best known as the soundtrack of NFL Films. Any American boy worth his salt would be hard pressed not to blast his little brother with a Dick Butkus forearm shiver after hearing the bombastic arrangements of Mr. Spence.
Titles like "West Side Rumble", "The Equalizer", "Salute To Courage" and "The Power and The Glory" pretty much sum up the pompous character of the genre. Often accompanied by the Voice of God and awe inspiring film of our gridiron heroes kicking the bejesus out of each other, NFL Films paved the way for the immense popularity of the game today.
Now go ahead and find that scrawny sibling and clothesline him ala Chuck Bednarik while humming along......

Haunted Cinema
Jack Stevenson writes about grindhouse/porn cinemas for Bright Lights Film Journal:
"... The theatre never had more than one employee on the premises, a union projectionist who could sit at either the ticket counter or in the projection booth, since he was responsible for both. If he sat behind the counter, he could see the screen in a mirror. He couldn't really make out what was happening in the movie, but when the film had tailed out of the projector and the screen went white, he knew it was time to put on another film. If he happened to be reading a book or was otherwise diverted, it could be quite a while before he happened to notice the movie had ended. No one ever came out of the theatre to complain. If the projectionist chose to kill time in the booth he could snooze on a sofa. When the film tailed out of the projector, it would flap away until he woke up and started the next movie. If he put the machine on rewind and went downstairs to sell tickets, the same thing would happen to the beginning of the film; it would flap away and eventually break off in pieces. This was how the beginnings and ends of so many porn films were lost. ..." (about The Green Parrot in Seattle)
