Shake It, Don't Break It

Vintage 1940s Lenticular Hula Girl in original plastic frame from my personal collection. There were several versions of this made, all with different frames and different poses of the girl. But all of them featured the same girl, she just did a slightly different dance in each.

Hawaiian Holiday

"When searching for Exotica records, one will inevitably stumble across a sublimely exotic piece of cover art, become excited, then realize, with crushing disappointment... it's a Hawaiian record. That blonde gal on the cover, standing by the volcano, humping a stone parrot? Just a ruse to trick you into buying another set of the same twelve fucking Hawaiian songs, usually played in precise, unimaginative arrangements. ... This is where Johnny Pineapple and His Orchestra separate from the pack. Most of the selections on this record aren't exactly deep cuts or obscurios, but fire and brimstone are they played well. ..."

So let's have a Hawaiian Holiday with Johnny Pineapple and His Orchestra. Shared by Flash Strap.

Hawai'ian Shirts - La Vie Continue

Alfred Shaheen - the Henry Ford of the Hawai'ian shirt has surfed into the sunset for the last time.

So, related to that, lemme say, OK - anything is, literally. on line.

Here's an individual that sold vintage clothing and decided to document the Hawai'ian shirts that accumulated and eventually became a collection and wardrobe. Bravo.

So - is the photography perfect - damn close. Could the images be bigger? Yes. Is it cool anyway? Not to some. Should you look? Up to you. Do I wish I was in Hawaii? Yes.

Hawaiian Ragtime

jayKayEss tells us:
"... Jo Ann Castle was a staple on the Lawrence Welk show. She developed her lightning-fast keyboard skills at the age of five and was just as proficient on the accordion as the piano. Here’s one of her better albums– old Hawaiian standards played with a ragtime flair! Surf guitar rounds out the mix and gives a few of the tracks a slightly rock ‘n roll flavor– my favorites are “Lovely Hula Hands” and “Little Grass Shack.” ..."
Go enjoy Hawaiian Ragtime over at Unpleasant.

Arkiva Tropika - "... From Florida to Fiji, from Haiti to Hawaii, from Seattle to Samoa, Arkiva Tropika is about the classic island imagery of tourism. Created as a way to both share and organize my collection, it consists largely of menus, yet also includes postcards, photos, brochures, matchbooks, and other paper ephemera from tropical themed environments, which are mostly pre-1970. ..."
