Watching "The Unholy Three" really did something to me.
Caption: January 23, 1924. Washington, D.C. "Midget." News item, Jan. 20: "The first organized touring Coolidge Marching Club to work for the nomination of the president comes to Washington Sunday morning. It is composed of 25 European midgets, headed by I.S. Rose, New Englander and impresario. The midgets wear buttons and ribbons on which is inscribed 'Coolidge 1925.'"

It's the Only Arcade My Mom Lets Me Go To
Looking through this collection of photos of rare arcade machines at Musee Mecanique in San Francisco, I thought "Wow, those are in great shape for their age" until I realized that NO ONE ever put money into them EVER. Not bored people. Not drunk people. Not even people with bad aim.
There doesn't seem to be a Snidley Whiplash in sight in the arcade version of "Saw Mill", just some guys.....making sawdust. (click on each pic to see it bigger)

The Unholy Three (1930 version)
There are few things more terrifying than a sadistic midget dressed as a baby, but throw in ventriloquism, old lady drag, and an emasculated strongman terrorized by a gorilla and you've got "The Unholy Three." Maybe because I saw this movie quite a few times on LSD (I was never a "peace and love" type) it's had quite an effect on me, and last night I watched it again on TCM. I should have blogged it sooner in case some of you who hadn't seen it could have set your DVRs, but hopefully it will rerun again soon. Here's some screenshots.

How have I managed to miss the fabulous 's marvelous distro blog until now? (answer: I live under a rock.) I have been downloading from there like a mad eedjit for the last half hour and am now enjoying music from Caterina Valente, an odd marimba band, some Cuban rhumba, and the album pictured above, an album of sixties pop music versions of Japanese songs. I'll be back regularly.....

The night disco died and was "blown up, real good...."
It was held between games of a twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. During the event, rowdy fans surged onto the field, and a near riot ensued. It would ultimately prove to be one of the most notable promotional ideas and one of the most infamous since "Ten Cent Beer Night" in Cleveland in 1974. The event is regarded as the culmination of a backlash against disco music that had an effect on the decline of the genre.
The turnout for this promotion far exceeded all expectations. Management was hoping for a crowd of 12,000, about the double the average for a Thursday night game that year. But an estimated 90,000 turned up at the 52,000 seat stadium. Thousands of people climbed walls and fences attempting to enter Comiskey Park, while others were denied admission. Off-ramps to the stadium from the Dan Ryan Expressway were closed when the stadium was filled to capacity and beyond.
White Sox TV announcers Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall commented freely on the "strange people" wandering aimlessly in the stands. Mike Veeck recalled that the pregame air was heavy with the scent of marijuana. When the crate on the field was filled with records, staff stopped collecting them from spectators, who soon realized that long-playing (LP) records were shaped like frisbees. They began to throw their records from the stands during the game, often striking other fans. The fans also threw beer and even firecrackers from the stands.
One of my favorite sports moments of all time. This short clip was released at the 25th anniversary of the event. It's now been 30 years. Let's play ball.
