Deep Voices: The Second Whale Record

If we can have Songs of the Mule - we sure can have songs by Humpback Whales!

" ... One of the fascinating things mentioned by the liner notes is that humpback whales sing a different song every year and that they are the only animals to do so.

Note: A high-end audio system will be necessary to hear "Blues: Deep Voices" as the sounds recorded are too low to be heard normally which will explain why it seems that there is no sound on that track. ..."

Mules ad nauseum

What do Iggy Pop, Connie Francis, Spike Jones, Rod McKuen, and Half Japanese have in common? They’re all part of one of the most irritating compilations imaginable, entitled ”Songs of the Mule”. If you really must have it, you can find it here.

Yes, I know I've posted this image before, but how many damn mule pictures do you think I own??

The Reagan years

"Guitar-centric, lo-fi, art damaged squawking ditties recorded mid 1980s, some 4-tracked, some bouncing tracks between two cassette decks, some random guitar tunings, a few vocals, including the 18 minute guitars-on-the-table take on Beefheart's Trust Us. ..."

This Week's My New Favorite Band

Hey- I know you're all hipper than me and this is probably over for you all already, but there's seven (okay, maybe more, maybe less) deadly Finns, and they define the essence of ROCK (make gesture with clenched fist and flexed forearm). For me, their music transcends the gag, because their arrangements are so comprehensively perfect. Also the Elvis hubcap belt buckle, beehives, real russian balalaika players, skeleton minidresses, ubersquiffs, and african drummers don't hurt, either.

Sing Along With Basie

After the huge success of their first album “Sing a Song of Basie” in 1957, jazz vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross recorded a second set of songs lyricizing the charts and solos of Count Basie’s band...this time backed by the Count himself.

“Sing Along With Basie”, which includes such standards as “Jumpin’ at the Woodside” “Every Tub” and “The King”, is a much harder album to find than the first….but you won’t have any trouble locating it if you click here.

Nobody in Town can Bake a Sweet Jelly Roll like Mine

Well, I'm lying of course. I only bake ordinary bread. And I only do that on super special occasions (like when I'm broke).

But this powerful but pretty unknown (at least to me) blues/jazz singer is convincing. You better believe her when she's saying her Sweet Jelly Roll's are damned good.
Now, let Billie Poole, bake yourself a sweet Jelly Roll. You deserve it!

May God Bless Carlos ... and the new Benbenek Blog. Amen.

Those Mexican Hooligans!

Mexican Hooligans of the early 1960s seem considerably less hooligan-y than their US counterparts, judging by this video of the Mexi-pop group Los Hooligans.....

well, you better watch out now

America by Air

"In 1930, Ellen Church became the first airline stewardess after convincing Boeing Air Transport that the presence of women nurses would help relieve passenger fears of flying."
And the project turned out to be a huge success. Men with an economy good enough to chose to be transported by air in the 1930s and 1940s proved her right. Stewardesses have a soothing and comforting effect.
Training groups and schools were set up - and the requirements soon were hard to live up to.
I wouldn't have made it. And I'm pretty girlish, service minded and long enough

Check out if you would have been stewardess material in the 1950s: Stewardess Requirements.
