When Slim Met the Gipper

I love odd pairings, but this one almost made the top of my head explode. Slim Gaillard talks to George Melly about the invention of Vout, as well as a surprising visitor to Billy Berg's In LA in the 1940s. (parts 1 and 2 of the interview are pretty interesting, too).

And since we're talking about George Melly, how about a little poetry reading (found here ) of his entitled "Sounds That Saved My Life"? Which proves he was worthy of interviewing Slim.

J. B. Lenoir, a Swedish lesson and some acrobatic poetry

Here's J. B. and his friends Rönnog and Steve Seaberg. They interview him about his family and tranlates everything to Swedish. Then J. B. plays his song Round and Round which he dedicates to his daughter Barbara Ann. Rönnog translates everything to Swedish. Steve gets bored and picks up a guitar and plays along.

Much, much later ...

The Seaberg couple invented acrobatic poetry.
Here is Rönnog, Steve and Courtney Seaberg with Mark Wolfe performing Rönnog's poem "Changing the World" in 2006.
Rönnog passed away the year after. But Steve and Mark Wolf has continued their acrobatic poetry career.
They also perform in nude which can be experienced here.

Like Beat Man

Skipper Bartlett has a record ... and a problem to share:

"Ok, so before you all go downloading this willy nilly, let me tell you a bit about it. I bought this album on ebay, the seller cautioned me that there was a lot of surface noise but he also posted pictures of the vinyl, and it looked pristine, so I figured, "meh, some record collectors are overly picky about sound quality, me, not so much. I'm mean it's a 50 year old record so I'm happy if it's listenable." So I got it for a steal. Problem is, half of the album is barely listenable. The vinyl looks beautiful so it must be a defect in the pressing, unless the club that it was recorded in was above a machine shop or something. The noise affects the first half of each side and then it peters off, I've tried to eliminate it using Audacity and Garageband but I'm no wizz with these programs and I can't seem to make it any better without removing much of the track itself. So I offer it up as is, in hopes that someone out there might be able to clean it up and share it back. ...."

Cut up prose from pulp paperback covers

"... For ten years or more I collected sleaze/trash/pulp paperbacks published in the 1950s to '70s, mainly for the lurid cover art and cover blurbs. I ended up with almost a thousand, a few of the covers can be seen on flickr . The bulk of the collection went when I moved on to the boat, but one day late last century I had the idea to work the cover blurbs into some form of text piece. "Bonnie", my second attempt, came from the covers of various publishers' books, and I juggled them around until I was happy, keeping the individual quotes intact.

Thirty Books - Except Their Secrets... This was the first attempt at building prose/poetry from trashy paperback cover blurb. These all came from the same publisher, Softcover Library. The distinguishing traits of their books seemed to be a colour photo of a topless woman on the front cover but no sexual content in the actual text. I sat at the pc with all my Softcover Library copies in a box, pulling them out one by one and keying in the cover text, with the intention of shaping them into something later. There was no need. "Thirty Books" is the text in exactly the order the books came out of the box. I saw it made poetic sense with no intervention from me. It was thrilling. ..."
