Sweet Daddy

"Mr. Irresistible."
Sweet Daddy Siki  is a former championship 'rassler who was a terror in the squared circle. Born in Texas, he emigrated to Canada in the early 60's where his legion of followers packed the Maple Leaf Gardens to witness him deploy his signature "coco butt" move.
In this action shot, Siki, and "The Sheik", are working over Handsome Johnny Barend.

 

During the latter years of his pro wrestling career, Sweet Daddy released a series of  serviceable country music records that largely featured covers of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Charley Pride tunes. The LP "Sweet Daddy Siki Squares Off With Country Music" is a favorite of record cover collectors.

Amazingly enough, Sweet Daddy can still be seen and heard weekly leading the karaoke show at the "Duke", a  Toronto bar situated on Queen Street East and Leslie. Neat article about his royal highness at 501 Queen Streetcar

There was always an element of the forbidden for the young Yuma when purchasing these graphic chronicles of the "Masters of The Turnbuckle". From the cheap newsprint to the ostentatious covers, the element of sleaze always had an appeal.

RIP Captain Lou

Lou Albano passed away today at age 76. Long recognized as one of the greatest showmen of his day, the Captain had a special rapport with his stable of wrestlers that included the likes of Greg Valentine, Jimmy Snuka, The Iron Sheik and many others. He is credited with guiding 15 tag team champions to the belt, including the Wild Samoans. His managerial career rivaled that of Fred Blassie, The Grand Wizard and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
He could talk some shit...... here's a clip from 1984 with Mean Gene Okerlund that captures the essence of the Captain.

Ah, the names alone take me back to my years as un poco chupacabra in Buenos Aires, with my mug of steaming Ovaltino and a fistful of capybara jerky watching Los Titanes en el Ring. Ah memorias. Classy Fred Blassie

Hard to believe that the legend that was Fred Blassie would've celebrated his 90th birthday a few weeks back. If he had lived to celebrate this milestone, no doubt he would've pooh poohed the whole longevity thing and spent the day berating anyone who had the audacity to inquire as to the secret to a long life. Sadly Fred passed at age 86 and we are left with sweet memories of this titan of the squared circle.
All hail the "Hollywood Fashion Plate"

His legendary accomplishments in the ring included the infamous 1962 feud with Japanese wrestling icon Rikidozan. Employing his gimmick of filing his teeth and gnawing on the Japanese hero's forehead and drawing massive amounts of blood, legend has it that this sight gave many viewers heart attacks and some reportedly croaked on the spot.

Of equal note is his stellar recording career which produced the seminal LP King of Men in 1977. As noted in the liner notes, "Although this is his first disc, he is already far and away the best singer in the country and will beat the crap out of anyone who disagrees"

R.I.P. - Lillian Ellison

In the scripted, fabulist world of wrestling, the Fabulous Moolah was all real.
She wore bling before anyone called it that. She was a showman who clearly was all-lady.
“I love old people and I love babies,” she told The State in 2005. “And if anybody else steps in my way, I’ll just kick (their butt). That’s the way it is.”

The Fabulous Moolah, the legendary female wrestler who called Columbia home and became the first female inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame, died Friday.

She was 84.

Born Mary Lillian Ellison in 1923, she was raised in the Tookiedoo neighborhood near Blythewood — the youngest and only girl of 13 children. Her mother died of cancer when Ellison was 8.
Father-daughter time for Ellison meant attending weekly pro wrestling matches in Columbia.
Ellison was trained in the ring in the 1940s by then-women’s champion Mildred Burke — the sport’s biggest star at the time, according to the WWE.

Moolah held the world’s championship for 28 years, from 1956 to 1984.

The next year, she won it again for two more years.
In 1999, at age 76, she reclaimed the title for a final time.
A legend passes.... the creator of the Backbreaker is gone.

"Rowdy" Roddy

Well... I've changed the template for this blog a little bit. I think it looks better now.

Yesterday we talked about 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper. It looks like he acted in quite a few films! But a big part is of course movies where he was typecasted just because of his wrestling fame. And, no, he wasn't scottish. But it's easy to be mislead to think so hearing the music and seeing Roddy in kilt with bagpipes. This is more like it! And don't forget to listen to the famous sampled 'bubble gum' quote at this page (scroll down a tiny little bit... there... on the left. Oh, you found it!).
