'July 9, 1926. "Golf and bathing suits." For the first day of summer, we revisit the lovely ladies seen here a few days ago strumming ukuleles. Now they're on the links with an early air-conditioned golf cart.' [Click any leg for a very COOL enlargement over at Shorpy]
When Mitchum arrived on the set, everyone was mourning an actor who had been killed the day before by having his head crushed under the wheels of a stagecoach he was driving in a scene. When Mitchum was issued his cowboy costume he noticed the interior of the hat was a little "crusty".... the prop man gave it a brushing and informed Mitchum it was the hat the dead man was wearing at the time of his fatal accident. Gruesome.
Server notes that the script was by Michael Wilson, who went on to write It's a Wonderful Life, A Place in the Sun, Bridge on the River Kwai Lawrence of Arabia and Planet of the Apes. Some list of hits, huh? Many of his scripts went uncredited because of a HUAC ban, and Server points to the content of Border Patrol- good guys busting up slave labor, as one of the contributing factors to his suspicion by the HUAC. Funny.
"This is our wheelie bin - a dull run-of-the-mill green receptacle for our household rubbish. I'm hoping you will help me to decorate it with stickers and mail art (no larger than A4 ) and amaze the refuse collectors (and our neighbours) each fortnight when they come to collect it. All mail must be weatherproof and adhesive. I will document the progress here on this blog. Would love to get the whole thing covered by March 2009. Please help!
"The band name and incredible sleeve look promising, but the 'Mod' flavor comes entirely from using Western beat combo instruments to play traditional songs. The results are an odd combination of Pakistani melodies and rhythms with some flavor of surf music, especially from one guitarist's use of tremolo sound. ..." Moos from Global Groove posted a picture of his personal record collection, over 3000 strong, and I really have no reason to doubt that it's actually his collection and not, say, the record library at a community radio station or something, what with all the great stuff he's already posted on his site. Calypso, high life, cumbia, reggae and salsa just scratches the surface. So rather than spotlighting one album, I encourage you to visit and avail yourself of his great music.
His motto:
"Global Groove's rips are made without any filters. If the Lp has some cracks, we leave them.
Covers that are worn out will not be fixed, just photographed the way they are."
As an aficionado of the offbeat and obscure, it makes my heart sing when I discover a blog chock full of interesting looking pop music that I've never heard of. "Dang Dang" by the Clevers? "Hully Gully do Guarda" by Cleide Alves? "My Mummy Put Sugar on Me" by Os Incriveis? "Adolescent Enomorato" by the Snakes? Heeeeeeeeee-llllllll YES I say, and it's all for the taking at sodajovemguarda, which is as good a name for a blog as any.
Dancer and actress Cyd Charisse, whose legs were insured for a million dollars in the heyday of the Hollywood musical, died at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday, her agent said. She was 87. A classy dame is gone. Hotter than hot.
