Patty Scala

Mr Fab tells us: "Patty Scala (aka Eettap) is a 55 year old jailbird, former stripper, drug addict, bulimic, and teen mother who has bounced around the Midwest and West since childhood. At age 30, she got a guitar and started writing country/folky songs, often with lyrics inspired by her tumultuous life. Her daughter Renee has encouraged this, even getting her a four-track recorder and making the tape I'm posting here. And, yes, her first recordings were made in jail. ...."

Weirdo bad song contest

Bad Song Contest

That's right, Weirdo Records is holding a bad song contest.

To compete simply send in your bad song. It can be submitted on any recorded format. Reels, 2-track tape, 16rpm lps, wax cylinders, beta tapes, etc are perfectly welcome alongside more popular formats. If you prefer you may also submit a score or even some mere rough chord charts/lyrics/directions.

It's completely up to you to decide why the song is bad. Perhaps you know a creepy song that's quite fascinating. Perhaps there's an especially annoying song you find very intensely mediocre. Perhaps you know one that unduly pushes the limits of what could be called a song. Or you may think some entangled aesthetic combination of all of the above. The song does not necessarily have to be written/recorded by you, although originality is a factor of the judging process.

Submissions must be recieved at Weirdo by September 1st, 2008 & will not be returned. Qualifications, disqualifications, & other decisions are entirely at the discretion of Weirdo. However please note that your comments are more than welcome & all submissions will be given due consideration.

The winner of the bad song contest will receive a $50 gift certificate to Weirdo, so be sure to include your contact info along with your submission. Winner, runners up & honorable mentions will be posted on this page as they come in for all to see, hear, & guffaw over. The winner will be announced on the Weirdo email list & posted here promptly upon the end of the submission period.

What are you waiting for?

Send your submission to:

songwriting

First I thought she was just another cute but arrogant "youtube-girly", but she isn't. She can sing and she really knows something about songwriting.
You see: songwriting isn't difficult at all. Collegues who try to tell you it is, don't deserve to be called that way. Okay, not everybody can be a genious, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good time writing and singing your own songs (and that is what splogman has to say about songwriting ;)

"My camera cut me off at the end, but I had said basically everything I wanted to say anyway."

I hear Bill Fay calling

"I hear you calling from the riverbank
I will be coming when the air is black
All my time is lying on the factory floor
And all my time is lying on the factory floor

Some say messiah coming got to get it right
Some say messiah coming give me back my time
All my time is lying on the factory floor
And all my time is lying on the factory floor

I hear you calling

I hear you calling
I hear you calling..."

I found out about Bill Fay via the excellent Swedish music blog, Spengo.
The song "I hear you calling" is from his first album,'Time Of The Last Persecution', from 1971 and is a wonderful piece of music. It has this soothing and reassuring kind of thing going on.

I downloaded the whole album yesterday and it's filled with great and simple (and that is almost always a very positive thing in my book) songs.

I wonder why I never heard of him before? Oh, yes, this is exactly the reason why I love music. There is always something brilliant to find just around the corner (even if it's the 13th time around you walk around that particular corner).And.
I hear you calling.

(Thanks to Mattias, over at Spengo.)

Lamptown River

I got an email some days ago with 2 new songs from my friend Mats Larsson (MySpace page where you can listen some more).
He's a nice guy with a serious gift for soulful songwriting.
Once he was in the short-lived wild and crazy act named Punk Anderson with people from Apa State Mental, wich I wrote about earlier.

But that was a long time ago.

Listen to "Lamptown River". Just do it. You want regret it. Have a glass of Cognac. Sip it along with the music. Mmmm! Ahh!

And then let's take a group bow for true talent.
