Early Japanese Electronic Music

Earlabs: "Concert 20-21 century vol.7: early tape music"

A concert series of Japanese contemporary music after WWII given at Kioi Hall in Tokyo. This issue includes unreleased and rare tape music.

Toshiro Mayuzumi "Works for musique concrete X. Y. Z (1953, earliest musique concrete in Japan)" Makoto Moroi / Toshiro Mayuzumi "Variations on numerical principle of 7 (1956)" - same source of Hiroshi Shiotani's CD "Oto no Hajimari wo Motomete" - Toru Takemitsu "Vocalism A.I", "Ki. Sora. Tori (Tree. Sky. Bird)", "Clap Vocalism" (1956) Yoshio Hasegawa "A musical tale for radio "The World in
the Jar (1956)"

I found these recordings through my favourite p2p Soulseek. Soundquality is not very good (direct from an old vinyl) but it fills a gap in the history of electronic music. Mayuzumi shows his interest in films here already, presenting many acoustic scenes. He later scored a lot of movies before dying in 1997. The Moroi - Mayuzumi collaboration is purely electronic. Takemitsu's Vocalism AI is a haunting tape piece which really catches your attention. The others are a bit less expressive. Hashegawa's piece is actually a sort of radioplay which really MUST have been a big inspiration for John Zorn's 'Spillane'."

Week 48

Jan Turkenberg is telling us: "One of the last but certainly not least weeks, week 48 is online now: recordings from music students and music school pupils. ... Listen to this bunch of heroes who try to do something different with their spare time than watching soaps on television."

'You've Been Spiked'

Think 1970. Think Lalo Schifrin. Think Piero Piccioni. Think Michael Caine in trenchcoat.
Ok.
Now mix it with an oriental vibe (Ananda Shankar) and some late 70's disco.
Ok.
You've been spiked! And you've got Chris Joss.
Silver's Boogaloo has posted it.
Cool!

FaLaLaLaLa

A message from The King of Jingaling:
"'Tis the season...
Santa knows that you've been good little girls and boys and so he has something for you.

I'm proud to announce that FaLaLaLaLa.com is ready for you to come visit.

Before you get too excited, the actual music downloads will still not be posted until next Friday, November 26th.
I'm still fairly traditional and don't like to rush the season too much. The anticipation is part of the joy for me.

While the music is not posted yet, I wanted to give folks some time to poke around. At this point the format of the site is a message board.

I wish that I had more time to really put together a more full site, but work projects and two kids made that tough. So it's going to be pretty basic for now.

In order to view the forum with the music downloads you will need to register for the site. I do this only in the hope of encouraging a sense of community. Once you have registered there is no requirement to post or participate and your information will be kept strictly confidential. But I hope that you decide to stick around and share your love of Christmas music with like-minded folks."

"Who's gonna get me a beer?"

"... "I need a beer," Marvin said. "Who's gonna get me a beer? I'm gonna get me a beer? I feel like a beer. Hell, I need a beer. Where are my glasses?" He peered around him. "Ever read this book? I got it for Christmas or some goddamn thing. A history of the West. Look here. All these cowboys are wearing chaps. Workingmen, see. Look here Bronco Billy dressed up in the East's conception of the Western hero. See. From a dime novel. That's how authentic a Western we made when we made ‘Monte Walsh.’ Where's that beer? That author, he knows what it was reallylike. Get me a beer." ..."

Life In The Present according to Michelle Fierro

Michelle is a blogger just like me. And just like me she's very good at it! She runs two blogs: Life In Seattle, is more privatly and more about the real life matters and what goes on in her head; Life In The Present is a delicious link-blog where she sends us out to experience all kinds of beauty, nostalgia or just things that interests her. What interests her you might ask? Well... In the 'About' section she tells us: "Likes: rescuing spiders from bathtub drains, gangster movies, singing to my dog, cheese, bumblebees, produce markets, Beethovan, Bach, rainy days, looking out to sea from the shore, 50's cadillacs, Raymond Carver, Pablo Neruda, 80's new wave, snow falling, The Clash, The Pixies, Brian Eno, Bowie, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Hal Ashby, a really cold pillow, food magazines, guitars, ketel one, church bells, sunsets, Eddie Izzard"
Hm. That is a cool mix of things!
I like her blog. And I sometimes steal links from her (but I do it very smooth and nice). Like this one; and this one; and this one; and this one; and...
Yup. She's good at finding the nicer things residing on the internet!
So, pay Life In The Present a visit. And don't forget to sign her new cool guestmap. The more the merrier!

Hilda!

pcl2
Les Toil sais: "It's my pride and joy to introduce to you pin-up art's best kept secret--Hilda! We never even allowed this full-figured gorgeous mirth quake to become a footnote the in annals of American glam art. I'm here to hopefully change all that.
This Summer, while perusing a local antique show, I came across a vintage calendar from 1965. There were three things about it that arrested my cornea immediately and simultaneously. One--it was beautifully illustrated. Two--it featured
a gorgeous pin-up girl . And three--that gorgeous pin-up girl was a big beautiful woman."

Here's the gallery. And hey! Some Hilda Memorabilia! (via PLEP)
