Neon Lights

pcl2
The El Dorado Club, Fremont Street, Las Vegas c. 1950

"Neon in Nevada lights up the desert sky. It turns night into day. A distinctive symbol of the Silver State, neon -- like jazz -- is part of the culture America has presented to the world. Rather simple in concept, neon is composed of an electrically-charged gas enclosed in a glass tube. But the glass tubes may be bent into practically any shape, turning neon into liquid fire. Since neon was created, people have been fascinated by it for many reasons. The infinite variety of shapes it can assume, the subtle glow of its light, the jewel-like quality of its colors are all among the causes for its appeal. Today nostalgia is added to that list. For whatever reason, neon continues to fascinate and attract, as it always has."
'Nevada Historical Society' tells us about Neon Lights (and Vegas). (via Life In The Present)
If this had been one of those cool mp3 blogs - which it's not - there had been a Krafwerk song here.

Michael Tracy, AKA TRACY168

"The best year for graffiti was 1973," he ruminates. "Styles were coming out. We got into this thing with colors. First it was two colors, then three colors, then four. What makes me a powerful artist, " he states, " is that my paintings are alive, strong and very bright. The color combos make it. Balance: each color as strong as it is enhances the color beside it, going back and forth. Giving style and balance and movement, that is what makes a good artist."

The Ultimate Fake Band List

"Behold the glory that is the ROCKLOPEDIA FAKEBANDICA, eleventh revised, unabridged edition! Finally, all the fictional bands and singers from TV and movies listed in one convenient, scarily obsessive place. Why? It's the Internet, stupid! The Internet was created for such things as this! ... This is a list of fictional bands from movies and TV shows ONLY, with the occasional good exception. Granted, we had a minor scandal when I found out that three entries were real bands. Ooops! I shall do my homework from here on out. ..."

Examples:
"Fabulous Baker Boys, The - In the 1989 movie The Fabulous Baker Boys, real life brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges play brothers and pianists Jack and Frank Baker, lounge act types who decide to add a female singer to make their act more competitive. The singer is Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer).

Pinheads, The - Marty McFly's (Michael J. Fox) band from the beginning of Back to the Future. They audition to play the school prom, but are turned down for being "just too darn loud." The other, unnamed Pinheads were played by Paul Hanson, Lee Brownfield and Robert DeLapp. Trivia Time! The judge who turns them down is an uncredited Huey Lewis, of Huey Lewis and the News. (see also Marvin Berry and the Starlighters)

Amazing Marvin Suggs and his Muppaphone, The - From the Rita Moreno-hosted episode (10/09/76) of The Muppet Show. Voiced by Frank Oz with an Italian accent, this artiste "plays" "Lady of Spain" by hitting the tribble-shaped muppets (some named Lucy, Bernard, Marvin) with mallets as they go "ow" in key (noises of pain by Jim Henson & Jerry Nelson). Payback's a bitch, though, as a giant hammer slugs Suggs at the finale. You can find the song on The Muppet Show Album (1977) & CD Muppet Hits (1993). Try your hand at the virtual Muppaphone here. The Muppahone gag is awfully similar to Arthur Ewing and his Musical Mice, from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Marvin Suggs also shows up again in the Steve Martin-hosted episode (10/31/77) with a new act as Marvin Suggs and his All-Food Glee Club, which sings "Yes, We Have No Bananas.""

And much, much more! (thanks to Up-Tight)

Witty Ditties

pcl2
Pastor McPurvis sais: "Up this week is an album full of ‘adult’ songs sung by Charley Drew. Mr. Drew was the featured entertainer in the bar/lounge at the Hotel Taft in New York City for over 30 years during the mid part of last century. The songs are based on clever wordplay and double-entendre and are accompanied with simple but effective instrumental arrangements. If you can imagine Tom Lehrer with a bit of an adult edge you’ve got a good idea of Mr. Drew. All in all it is a fun little album that was new to me and hopefully new to you also. As always, Enjoy!"
That sound cool. I'll be there in just a minute!

Charles Bukowski - Uncensored

"Listen to uncensored material from the "Run With the Hunted" sessions.

Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) began his prolific publishing career in the 1940s. He is known for writing from his own experiences, including his heavy drinking and womanizing, two popular subjects in his poetry. Bukowski was the author of over 40 published books of poetry and fiction as well as "Barfly," a screenplay for a semi-autobiographical movie in which he was played by Mickey Rourke.

In 1993, the year before he died, this counterculture icon recorded and published selections from his classic Run With the Hunted.

According to co-producer John Runnette, Bukowski wasn't in the mood that night--to record his poems that is. Although his tough exterior helped to sell dozens of volumes of poetry, the "real" Bukowski appeared quiet and shy. Here Salon Audio features additional material from that recording session, including a candid conversation between Bukowski, his wife, and the producers that enables us to glimpse a lesser-known Bukowski." A question from one of our guests

In comments: "oh mannn-- I have wanted this album ('Sounds to make you shiver') on cd for years... the site you linked to no longer has it available for dl... I JUST found out about it, and it's too llate to dl the songs from there... Is there anybody seeing this, that would want to email me the mp3's?"

Always bringing you new sounds to your ears!

"Oddio is a play on the word audio, but it does not imply that the music is odd. It is just not likely to be heard on popular radio. Oddio Overplay exists to bring new sounds to your ears - artists from overseas, artists from underground scenes, artists working from their home studios. The underdog is champion here. Too much great music remains in obscurity."

You can find an ever-growing selection of hundreds of remarkable sources for legal and free music on the web. And radio (there's even a schedule!)! Tons of links!

Photographies by Yuri Syuganov

pcl2
[Click image for larger view of these 'Sitting People']

Yuri tells us: "LOMOportfolio.com is about nostalgia. It is a collection of pictures I took during late 1980s, early 1990s. These were my student and first postgraduate years; a period in my life when I constantly carried with me a little camera - a LOMO-compact-automat - and shot pictures of virtually anything that attracted my eye. "Around-photography" happenings claimed the rest of my time back then.
Recently I was looking through two stacks of old prints, and felt a sudden urge to dust those pictures off and bring the images back to life. Especially considering that my newly acquired film scanner would allow me to display pictures which had not originally made it into prints and had never been seen before."
