When All Else Fails, Bite 'Em
The Tingling Mother's Circus has a lovely tune about a special superhero, maybe it's the guy on the album cover with the red cape and swell hat, I don't really know.

Turkish Spiderman vs. Captain Turkey and possibly some Mexican Wrestlers
I simply don't have the attention span to devote to an entire 90 minute movie, so this action-packed Turkish movie that clocks in at a solid 4:09 was just about right. Though I was sort of thinking about wandering into the lobby for some Junior Mints at about 3:00 in. I must say that I expecting a different outcome when I saw the bad guy feeding some gerbils into a long plastic tube though.....
Stolen off the Facebook page of my old pal Mr. Teflon, which seems like all Facebook is good for.

Cinematic Turkeys
Donna Lethal's Phillipine movie advertisements got my brain a bubbling about bizarre foreign films. Turkey has a well deserved reputation for having turned out.. well, some cinematic turkeys. During the 1970's, Turkish cinemas were flooded with a wide assortment of 'reinterpretations' of Hollywood films. Often these celluloid clones featured soundtracks and large chunks of footage from their original sources. Unfortunately, much of what survives today, represents a small portion of what filmmakers were churning out during the heyday of Turkish moviemaking. It's hard not to enjoy the downright surreal hodgepodge of American icons shoehorned into low budget, low concept scenarios. YouTube has a decent selection of clips, a few of which are posted below. Two DVD companies I am aware of that have Turkish offerings include MONDO MACABRO and ONAR FILMS. MONDO has a great all region double bill of THE DEATHLESS DEVIL and TARKAN VERSUS THE VIKINGS, both of which are of a reasonable quality. ONAR is based in Greece with a modest library of Turkish films like 3 DEV ADAM and TURKISH SUPERMAN. DVD's from ONAR are PAL format and the quality can be pretty damn rough, however they may be the only venue for some titles.
In 3 DEV ADAM, Spider Man is not living with Aunt May or struggling with his awkwardness around Mary Jane - he's one evil sum' bitch and he's not afraid to prove it by taking a girl's face off with a boat propeller. Captain America and Santos arrive in country at the request of authorities and will not rest until the psychotic webhead's crime ring is smashed.
Oodles more action than Singer's SUPERMAN RETURNS. Is it just me or does it look like TURKISH SUPERMAN is sucking in his gut and holding his breath every time he has a frontal shot?
Training montages are an essential component of any action film and TURKISH STAR WARS is no exception. Hang through the first few minutes to see our hero really take it to the limit! (new music added to the Youtube clip)
New to me - this clip of TURKISH RAMBO features a climatic orgy of gun violence as our bare chested, headband sporting he-man scurries about blasting off his RPG only to find additional rounds for his weapon wherever he kneels. I want more!
TARKAN VS THE VIKINGS is a homegrown hero that adventures about Europe with his faithful dog and faces off against the vicious Vikings. Despite lots of goofy props like the cephalopod in the clip below, TARKAN has a genuine core of Turkish values which are fascinating for this North American viewer.

Confessions of a Superhero
I had viewed clips of CONFESSIONS a while back but just picked up the DVD today and heartily recommend the documentary to both geeks and non-geeks alike. The delicate task of portraying Hollywood Boulevard superhero street performers as something other than a pathetic cartoon is deftly handled by director Matt Ogens. The stubborn drive these characters possess to pursue the dream of stardom is both admirable and heart breaking. Peruse You Tube for additional clips and you can also check out the official website here.
And thank you to the curvaceously hot Jennifer Wenger (formerly Gehrt) for squeezing into that Wonder Woman outfit and making one perverse comic book geek very happy.

Galen Gough

"October 5, 1923. Washington, D.C. The war hero and former invalid Galen Gough, known as the "Miracle Strong Man" after recovering from having his head caved in by bomb shrapnel in France."
Click image for full size at Shorpy.
"Gough's most serious wound came after an exhausting 24-hour march up to the front lines and into battle with the Marines at Vierzy, near Soissons. It was there shrapnel from an airplane bomb caved in the left side of his head and pierced his brain. By all standards he should have been dead. Service personnel at the scene thought he was dead and deposited his lifeless body with the other war casualties.
When officials finally discovered that Gough was still alive he was transferred back to New York where he was treated for his wounds. He was eventually discharged as permanently and hopelessly disabled.
Gough remained in that helpless condition for three years.
However, during those early years, Gough began experimenting with various exercises. He finally settled on crude isometrics and started a regiment of activities that eventually led him to a full recovery. In the process he dispelled the opinions of medical experts on two continents who said he would never be anything more than a hopeless invalid.
His strength didn't stop though, Gough continued to build up his twisted and wrecked body to a point that his recovery was beyond human belief. Noticing that his health had reached super-human proportions, Gough set off on a course that would lead him to such billings as "The Strongest Man on Earth," "The World's Miracle Strong Man" and "The Daringest Daredevil in The World."" Chuck Norris - Karate Kommandos

"... This is Star Comics' (an imprint of Marvel) short-lived series based on the short-lived cartoon Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos. The 4 issues that complete the series credit Jo Duffy and Steve Ditko with the writing and art (respectively) but come on, we all know Chuck made these damn things himself. ..."

Flash Gordon

" ... Flash Gordon at it's most typical embodied what I can only call "The Art Deco Space Opera Continuum". This can also be seen on the covers of a LOT of SF pulps, like the covers to those "Thrills Inc." issues. Flash was however, the trendsetter to be sure. It is a streamlined future, it's design implying the promise of forward motion... this is a world, a culture that is going somewhere. ..."
