Achieving SwaG! In Your Own Home: A Dangerous Pain In The Ass

It sounds like it should be easy to do your own SwaG! disk jockey program. Just get the music and equipment together, mix vigorously, and broadcast the results until the inevitable FCC goon squad bursts through your door.

But what will it be missing? That’s right: the Guano. Mr. Bat Guano puts a considerable spin on what would be your humdrum run-of-the-mill milquetoast “eclectic” music program. If you were to try to match his “flavor,” you would find it a big pain in the ass. You could even die in the attempt...

What the...?!? Oh, it's about that radio show. Three three-hour recorded live broadcasts here.

The Loos of England

I knew of a few tunes by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich (including the song "Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich" which I don't know if anyone else ever did a cover version of) but not of their tune celebrating the superior public toilets of Britain. The album title is pretty swell too, If Music Be the Food of Love....Prepare for Indigestion . None of the three gentlemen look particularly sleepy nor possessing a particularly prominent proboscis so I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this side of the album cover depicts Dave Dee, Mick and Tich. Go ahead, tell me I'm wrong.

Accident Songs: "Curse of the Hearse"

Terry Teene:

Thanks to Richard Eyman - even I've never heard of this one.

When the Fireballs—a rock group with which he was performing at the time—disbanded, Terry began a second parallel career as a clown. He has performed under the names of "ToBo the Clown" and "Clownzo"; and was one of the creators and originators (with George Voorhees) of the costume, likeness, name and character of Ronald McDonald, one of the world's most recognizable trademark characters.

Steel Blue Innovari

In 1966, U. S. Steel created a concept car sports wagon called the Innovari--to me it looks more like the hearse that might take George Jetson to his final resting place. Learn more about this classic vehicle, and hear the music from the promotional album for the car here.

A Singer, A Swinger, A Gasser!

From 1959, A Singer, A Swinger, A Gasser--don't bother trying to read it backwards, it's not a palindrome, but small combo gems from Annie Ross (of Lambert, Hendricks, and) backed by tenorman Zoot Sims.

Cherry Wainer - 'The Happy Organ'

Love the poodle! Be sure to check out Cherry and Don Storer's other videos, including Green Onions and Night Train.

Julia Lee without her Boyfriends

For those of you who might like the exceptional vintage R & B of Julia Lee but not the 60s hully gully of Vivi Bach (below), I had to post this even though it's from the same site. I especially liked Chuck it in a Bucket, I've had days like that too, Julia.

Hang on to your dream

Hang on to your dream is the new Aperitivo radio show. This week we will try to make happen the morning of the Big Night.  With the revolutionnary help of The Sparks, Alessandro Alessandroni, The Monks, the Fall, a great cover of the hit "Porque te vas" and a lot more leftfield disco, german porno disco, soul and groovy delights.

Smokey Hogg

So you're needing some classic Texas juke joint blues to get you through the night? Then head over to Handle With Care for some sides from Smokey Hogg, you're on your own to find the mess of ribs to go with it.

Please Stand By

Bryan from Bryan's Lounge has assembled a collection of vintage test cards (you know, what TV stations showed after they signed off for the night? Before there was 24 hour service? No? Then you're under the age of 30.) and Station IDs with a vintage production music bed composed by Christian Mondstein and Jo Part. The 2nd song, "Ginger Snap", will be painfully familiar to Americans, though hearing the tune in its entirety makes me love it anew.

Jungle Accordions

If you need to cool down a bit after all that frantic klezmer twisting we've been doing, let me recommend the more subdued yet equally soul-satisfying Spectacular Accordions. Maestro Charles Camilleri treats us to his accordions-around the world vision, as he serenades us with La Cucaracha, Under Paris Skies (duh), the tango-ready Kiss of Fire, and amazingly, a Jungle Fantasy.

Twistin' the Freilach!

Learn to Speak Carny

Well, children, last week we learned how to speak beatnik....have you been practicing? Good. Now let's learn some new lingo which may come in handy if you're looking for work next summer at the country fairs.....let's Learn to Speak Like a Carny. So you know how to deal with the Lot Lice and the wobblies.

O Rei do Forró

I do so love those groovin' guys and their snappy Forró outfits.....and the music from Pedro Sertanejo "O rei do Forró" is just as swell as his fashion sense.

Los Rockin' Devils

I first discovered them while watching Amor a Ritmo de GoGo. Here they are doing "Hey Lupe," which they also do in that film. They're still around.

Don't worry - this site has so much more. Check out the gorgeous old movie star cards at RossCards.

Get Shafted

You sayin' this 70s album by "The Superdudes" is nothin' but a baaad ripoff of classic music from blaxploitation movies? Hush your mouth.

John Farnham - Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)

"Can't afford to get bored..."

"Sadie" was Australia's pop sensation, John Farnham's first single and launched his solo career in the late 60's. He obviously didn't hook up with a competent tailor prior to this shoot.

One way to tell if a woman really loves you -- if she'll have yo' dog...

Swingingest Boy in School

Here's what I found at Record Collector's Hot Vault--Tarzan complaining about Jane's coconuts, how to do the Mummer's Strut, and tales of Bashful Blonds, and Oliver Cool, the Swingingest Boy in School. Honestly, if that's not enough excitement for you in one day, I'm not sure if you can be helped.

Magna Carta

Magna Carta is the new Aperitivo radio show, this week we will investigate the reasons to travel our all world, and beyond.
With the help of  a morrocan cover version of Nino Ferrer's Mirza, the post punk Flying lizards, the graceful Minnie Riperton, Louis Armstrong singing Pharoah Sanders (true, no mash up), Iranian soul sitar and a lot more groovy and unexpected delights.

Taboooooooo

If you're needing some inspirational tunes while your hanging the "trophy" in the post below in your studly bachelor pad, may I recommend Taboo by the very exotic sounding Chief Walatghi and his Afro-Drummers. Though it's probably just some studio musicians who got drunk one night and left the tape rolling and decided to release it anyway.

Trophy

Seen at This Isn't Happiness

The Sweet Science

Shelled out a few dinero to watch Manny Pacquiao slice up Miguel Cotto last night in the WBO welterweight championship bout. Went back through the Yuma archives and found this great boxing site featuring the photo's of Harry Winkler, a longtime Los Angeles area fight figure and California correspondent for The Ring magazine from 1939 to 1953. He is best remembered, however, for his extensive collection of boxing photographs.

Jack Kid Berg

Johnny Farr

Chuck Wiggins "reading" a book.

Sir Lancelot and Zombies

Since I spent so much time playing duck and cover in the back room of my house to avoid freeloading children on Halloween, I still have a lot of catching up to do and am just now discovering some swell Halloween related (sort of) posts. Including this collection by Sir Lancelot from Zorch's Inner Sanctum which was thrown in with a bunch of zombie-themed 78s which are interesting as well.

Garage Latino

We just don't have enough Latin 60s pop music in our lives yet, since we haven't got cover versions such as Janky Panky, Grandes Bolas de Fuego or Lupe y el Baron Rojo -- not to mention a lot of swell original tunes. I'm listening to a mess of great stuff from Garage Latino, and I haven't got to the cumbia yet.

Shirley and Company

Betcha not many people knew what "And Company" looked like ...

one of my favorite 70s soul dance hits. I had the 45.

Chicken Twist!

As the record sleeve taunts, "If you quit before this record....you're Chicken". If you quit before this record....does what? Lays an egg? Gets Fricasseed? Frees Tibet? I'm confused.

I will contemplate this question while doing the Chicken Twist and get back to you on it. Maybe there are some answers on Vol. 1.

Bells are Ringing

No, it's not a flare-up of tinnitus, every tune you hear on Sid Bass' With Bells On is actually infused with chimes, glockenspiels, gongs, and every other sort of clanging instrument you can imagine.

If I were a peppy radio DJ I'd say "Bells are ringing? No, more like Bells are SWINGING". But I'm not, so I won't.

Slim Gaillard and the Velvet Fog

If there's anyone else out there who is as obsessed with Slim Gaillard as I am, you might enjoy some of Slim's tunes sung by no less than Mel Torme, backed by swingin' big band, at Scoredaddy's. Odd, yes, but delightfully satisfying. Plus, I've been needing a version of the Hut Sut Song for my very own, and that's here too.

Accident Songs: Phantom 309

Ooh, it's Red Sovine again - one of the masters of the genre, with (almost) dead kids, of course - and a twist.

After five years (3)

What has become of Daan Jansen?

He was one of the youngest contributors to the first CD of WM Recordings: 13 years old, playing and singing his own arrangement and lyrics of the penguin song.

This is Daan now:

Last summer he finished his VWO (highest level of Dutch secundary school) cum laude and twice he has conducted the Youth Symphony Orchestra De Vuurvogel (Firebird) in Zwolle, when playing his own symphonic arrangements of computer game music.

He's studying Business Information Technology now at the University of Twente. Apart from De Vuurvogel he also sings in a pop choir and recently has taken up pianolessons. Right now he is working on a popsong together with Sifra Meutgeert and he plans on writing for mixed voices choirs when he will be "less busy studying".

Together with Jelle-Jan van der Wagt from whom we will be learning more next week, he occasionally makes Z News and other videos

Singapore a Go Go

I love looking at sites such as LP Cover Lover, but don't visit regularly because of the frustration of not being able to hear the music as well. Fortunately I was easily able to locate the music from the cover above--and a lot more great music--at Radio Diffusion (scroll to the very bottom of the page for Yvonne & the Sparklers).

Les Mains Noires

Either Les Mains Noires is like 20 people with helper elves, or someone who is the recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant and has nothing but time to post all the great offbeat music. I liked this record from Claudio et les Satanik, which is also my favorite band name of the day.
