Cocktail Sans Souci

OK, so I like this great album cover of this Venezuelans album by Sans Souci just a little bit better than the music, so what of it?

Midgets for Coolidge

Watching "The Unholy Three" really did something to me.

Caption: January 23, 1924. Washington, D.C. "Midget." News item, Jan. 20: "The first organized touring Coolidge Marching Club to work for the nomination of the president comes to Washington Sunday morning. It is composed of 25 European midgets, headed by I.S. Rose, New Englander and impresario. The midgets wear buttons and ribbons on which is inscribed 'Coolidge 1925.'"

No, it's not a top-level meeting at PCL HQ. But it is an Italy/Mexico/Hong Kong co-production that comes to us via the Shaw Brothers and AIP, so you know it has to be good.

Sammy Wants to Touch You! -- More SwaG! Radio Broadcasts

Sammy Davis Jr. kicks this SwaG! broadcast off with a kickin’ “Perdido”!!! Doo-beeyo-beeyob-ba-doot! This song pokes a hole in your gut and sticks in a glass eye! And dances frantically but sophisticatedly on the empty stage that is your stupid little malnourished hipster soul. And makes you know his “scat.”

And that is followed by three hours of other songs.
Here is where you can find recorded SwaG! broadcast.

BUT WAIT! There's more! We have TWO MORE SwaG! recorded broadcasts, a total of SIX HOURS of audio entertainment, that we forgot to post previously on the PCL LinkDump. Featuring artwork stolen from PCL LinkDump. Enjoy!

It's the Only Arcade My Mom Lets Me Go To

Looking through this collection of photos of rare arcade machines at Musee Mecanique in San Francisco, I thought "Wow, those are in great shape for their age" until I realized that NO ONE ever put money into them EVER. Not bored people. Not drunk people. Not even people with bad aim.

There doesn't seem to be a Snidley Whiplash in sight in the arcade version of "Saw Mill", just some guys.....making sawdust. (click on each pic to see it bigger)

The Thimble Theater. They Dance. The enthusiasm is infectious.

You tell me your "Toothpick Fantasy" and I'll tell you mine.

Who Was Peppy Fields?

If you can't find a bio on wikipedia, or a picture in Google images, where CAN you find it? If you're looking for info about Miami singer/actress/recording artist/radio host Peppy Fields, you will want to start at Cotton Candy Truant where Dusty S., the Charlie Chan of the blogspot world, shares the details of what she dug up about Peppy's career. So the answer is, if it's not easily found, maybe you have to do a little digging and put it out there yourself.

The Unholy Three (1930 version)

There are few things more terrifying than a sadistic midget dressed as a baby, but throw in ventriloquism, old lady drag, and an emasculated strongman terrorized by a gorilla and you've got "The Unholy Three." Maybe because I saw this movie quite a few times on LSD (I was never a "peace and love" type) it's had quite an effect on me, and last night I watched it again on TCM. I should have blogged it sooner in case some of you who hadn't seen it could have set your DVRs, but hopefully it will rerun again soon. Here's some screenshots.

Here's the film's opener. Note, this is the talkie remake directed by Jack Conway, but just as good.

"......spaced out fringe folk with unusual inner-city vibe..."

From the liner notes of Jerry Rayson's "The Weird Thing in Town":

“In this album I only use three sounds instead of all of them and three languages with African accents. The music of it is called primitive soul music...If you enjoy the new and the weird, this is for you.”

The album references boogaloo and limbo, journeys into space, with time out for an extended anti-junkie and -hobo rant. Acid Archives called Jerry Rayson's "Weird thing In Town" "...spaced out fringe folk with unusual inner-city vibe and Puerto Rican tangents."

American Psycho's

July 12, 1979. Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois.
The night disco died and was "blown up, real good...."

It was held between games of a twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. During the event, rowdy fans surged onto the field, and a near riot ensued. It would ultimately prove to be one of the most notable promotional ideas and one of the most infamous since "Ten Cent Beer Night" in Cleveland in 1974. The event is regarded as the culmination of a backlash against disco music that had an effect on the decline of the genre.
The turnout for this promotion far exceeded all expectations. Management was hoping for a crowd of 12,000, about the double the average for a Thursday night game that year. But an estimated 90,000 turned up at the 52,000 seat stadium. Thousands of people climbed walls and fences attempting to enter Comiskey Park, while others were denied admission. Off-ramps to the stadium from the Dan Ryan Expressway were closed when the stadium was filled to capacity and beyond.

White Sox TV announcers Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall commented freely on the "strange people" wandering aimlessly in the stands. Mike Veeck recalled that the pregame air was heavy with the scent of marijuana. When the crate on the field was filled with records, staff stopped collecting them from spectators, who soon realized that long-playing (LP) records were shaped like frisbees. They began to throw their records from the stands during the game, often striking other fans. The fans also threw beer and even firecrackers from the stands.

One of my favorite sports moments of all time. This short clip was released at the 25th anniversary of the event. It's now been 30 years. Let's play ball.

Respectfully Submitted,

Your ever present sports reporter - J. Yuma

The Ribald Rage of Alaska

This is a bit of American history I did not know, courtesy of the liner notes of Roscoe Holland's 1961 album, For a Piece:

Here, in this sultry sex-loaded album, is ample proof why Roscoe is the ribald rage of Alaska and one of the most explosive forces that brought the 49th state into the Union.

After listening to the album you'll surely see how such classic party songs as "Stick Out Your Can, Here Comes The Garbage Man", and the flatulent tale of "Foul Mule Train" were a major reason that Alaska was granted statehood.
