The Association - Along comes Mary

Requiem for the masses:

The Hasil Adkins Rejection Letters

"This week marks the arrival (April 29, 1937) and unfortunately the departure (April 25, 2005) of The Wildest One Man Band Hunch Machine that ever stalked the planet. ...
... Early on, he'd mail out his home-recorded concoctions to the country music stars of the day, hoping to place a song or grab a plum spot on a traveling package show. Like the rest of the world, Nashville would have to wait a few decades to get hep to Hasil's chicken walk-inspired genius."

" ... and my advice to you would be stay where you are and keep working at your singing and playing and maybe one day you will be able to come to Nashville.

Good luck to you

Sincerely,
Ernest Tubb"

Click covers for information about the actual comics and a little bigger view.

" ... Those comics which aim high and hit are often as unsaleable as those which aim anywhich way and wildly miss. Not all of the bad ones display their full badness on the front cover - all of them must be read in full to be truly appreciated. datajunkie is back! Now in 3-D!

datajunkie is back. That is great news in many ways. One good thing is that we get to know the finest in obscure pulps!. Another good thing is that we get to use the super-sight goggles again so that we can hang out with Captain 3-D in the third dimension.
But - most importantly - hyperdave is back with a vengeance. I've missed him.

What's the Word?

That's right - Thunderbird and other liver-curdling wines are all presented and rated for your cringing pleasure at Bum Wine.

If your taste buds are shot, and you need to get trashed with a quickness, then "T-bird" is the drink for you. Or, if you like to smell your hand after pumping gas, look no further than Thunderbird. As you drink on, the bird soars higher while you sink lower. The undisputed leader of the five in foulness of flavor, we highly discourage driking this ghastly mixture of unknown chemicals unless you really are a bum ... WARNING: This light yellow liquid turns your lips and mouth black! A mysterious chemical reaction similar to disappearing-reappearing ink makes you look like you've been chewing on hearty clumps of charcoal.

songwriting

First I thought she was just another cute but arrogant "youtube-girly", but she isn't. She can sing and she really knows something about songwriting.
You see: songwriting isn't difficult at all. Collegues who try to tell you it is, don't deserve to be called that way. Okay, not everybody can be a genious, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good time writing and singing your own songs (and that is what splogman has to say about songwriting ;)

The Ugly Baseball Card Blog

Dedicated to a hobby that turns out approximately 10 zillion different cards a year. Not all of them can be pretty.

Errors: Pants are slowly swallowing player - hat is already partially digested. Two of the fans at the game passed away before first pitch. Photo was taken shortly before player was hoisted up the flag pole for Star Spangled Banner.

Errors: Player may have caught Tom Henke Disease. Despite Major League pedigree, player sports rookie-ball haircut. At least one fan (right, in yellow) decided to flee stadium rather than face hair/eyewear combo.

Errors: Big glasses. Too happy. Obscenely yellow. Possible decapitation photo. Chest hair.

The Billy Letters

"In the late '90s, pop-culture historian Bill Geerhart had a little too much time on his hands and a surfeit of stamps. So, for his own entertainment, the then-unemployed thirtysomething launched a letter-writing campaign to some of the most powerful and infamous figures in the country, posing as a curious 10-year-old named Billy. ..."

Bouncy Bouncy

First let me say this is my only home for the next 5 days - I'm moving to a new hosting service (stupid me for ever starting to blog via ftp in the first place) and I can't point to the new servers for 5 days.

After having seen Jaykayess' post of the Inflatable church, I was really sort of disappointed to see that the floor was flat and not the inflated moon bounce type. I think it further robs something from the vows if you're not jumping up and down while reciting them, no? I think a bouncy floor might've sweetened Jesus' tears (Lachryma Christi) somewhat.

I was also reminded of this crimp (simultaneous rhythmic recitation) of "Bouncy Bouncy" from The Mighty Boosh:

Table Dancin' Woman

"Table Dancin' Woman", as told by The Ballroom Rockets.

Mark E Smith: wonderful and frightening

"Perhaps Smith's face is so distinctive, because it is always pulling in two directions; you can never be sure if it is half-open or half-closed. But sitting beside him in a hotel bar in Manchester, as he drinks Malaysian beer and takes dark-brown snuff to beat the smoking ban, I am struck by a new thought. In the barrel-chest that he holds up high; in the gaunt, boxy head with its wide mouth and narrow lips; and most of all in the nose, which is pugnacious yet honest; Smith looks rather like Johnny Cash.
...
Cash is one of the few people Smith admits to admiring in his new autobiography, Renegade: The Lives and Tales of Mark E Smith. In the best tradition of celebrity memoirists, Smith has not yet read his book, so when I say that he cites Cash as an influence, he groans and looks towards the exit, through which his ghost-writer has just disappeared. 'Oh no, he hasn't put that in, has he?' Smith says of the Mancunian journalist Austin Collings, who compiled the memoirs from hours of taped conversations, mostly in the pubs of Smith's home town of Prestwich, Greater Manchester. The result would make a useful pub-crawl guide, from the Church, to the Forresters and on to the Woodthorpe. ...."

Side note: Last Christmas, I was in Sweden visiting my American-expat mom and sister. We were all waiting at the station in Örebro for a train to take us skiing when one of the old drunks who hang out there stumbled up to my mother, who has thick brown hair down to her waist, and stared at her for a small eternity. Suddenly, he shouted "VAD HÅR!" and shuffled off. My sister, without missing a beat, turned to my mother and said, "he just called you a whore, mom."

P*rno Soundtracks

"What happens if you put three professional musicians in a recording studio and ... have them watch porn movies?

While you probably begin imagining strange situations, these guys made it a creative venture. They created a new soundtrack to the 70ties adult movies they were watching - turning off the sound and just letting their instincts come up with vivid musical imaginations. And it worked. ..."

Love Among the Fuller Brushes

A while back I found a delightfully cheesy early 1960s vintage Fuller Brush catalog featuring a romantic tale of a young stenographer’s budding romance with a ski instructor. The art director of the magazine must have been huffing some of the pine-scented Fuller Brush cleaning products, since many of the pictures in the catalog look like the inside of a haematoma. And the couple’s skin tones inexplicably go from pasty pale to three shades lighter than a minstrel show and back again.
Don’t take my word for it….for some unknown reason I scanned a mess of them which you can see in my Flickr set Love Among the Fuller Brushes.

The Count Five

Psychotic Reaction:

Piece of mind:

GLAD

Way back the old days, before I was a contributor to this blog, (I remember that I used to picture Sebastian and P-E and Ange all in a room blogging away - like , y'know, PCL Central or something) I would send Sebastian my latest video, and generally he would post it, because of his excellent taste, mostly, and that encouraged me to stick with my own blog, GlyphJockey for 2 and a half years now. But now I work here too, so I'm gonna take a chance and post my latest work (2 minutes long, so don't worry): "GLAD" I hope you like it. If not, simply don't send in your monthly payment.

It's been a while since I've put together one of my vignette videos based on concepts that hit me......

I drive a 12 year old Pontiac convertible to my place of work, so I get quite the panoramic view. I was waiting for the light to change across from a storage complex, when I noticed how the end of Cream's "Glad" matched so beautifully with the tube man on top of the storage complex's roof as he waved his pneumatic arms and whipped his pneumatic head back in an unbridled expression of glee and air-filled pride.

I phonecammed a test with the stereo blasting, and then I knew I had to do it.....

Guns and Panties

"Turn yours into the gayest bathroom in town!"

Y'know, I had one of those "your name here" bullfight posters. My dad said his friend brought it home from Mexico ... I'm guessing his friend's name was "Adam."
