It seems appropriate to celebrate the Dutch 'liberation day' with a compilation of 'dutch successes' of the fifties. More than that I just felt like a sharity. The 10 inch lp is not divided into tracks, it's the opposite: what's so special about this album is that some of the tracks are connected with each other by a pianist, like on other of this kind of compilations was done with applause. I'm not sure how that was done. Technically it was possible with multiple real to real players but I think pianist Gerard van Krevelen played it live while the existing recodings where playing in the studio, or I like to think it, anyway.

There are so many gems on this crappy-kitsch Hi-Fi Masterpiece (it says so on the back cover, so it MUST be true) I had trouble deciding which to use as an example. If soap opera organ meets flirtatiously eloquent accordion combo is YOUR cup of tea, go get this winner from the Triads, this one will grace my playlists for some time to come.

I've Got a Pain in My Sawdust

The oddest thing about this record is not the falsetto of Tiny Tim, or his choice of obscure tunes, but the bizarre and seemingly random laughter and crowd reaction from this (supposedly) live record, "Concert in Fairyland". You can hear him imitating each of the Ink Spots in his version of "If I Didn't Care", romancing those with canine-hearing in "Indian Love Call", and resurrecting the long-forgotten "I've Got a Pain in My Sawdust". Truly an effective way to rid your home of those last New Years Eve party stragglers who refuse to leave.

It was pretty heartbreaking yesterday to discover that one of my favorite blogs by Yayo Salva had been removed. Yayo has been an incredible source for obscure and out-of-print pop music from around the world -- I can't imagine my current collection and playlists without him. Fortunately, a few of his blogs still remain: Voces del Folclore and Viejos Estilos.

C'est Magnifique

Boot Sale Sounds has one of those incredibly loopy clangy percussion extravaganzas that you either love or loathe. He apparently loathed it because it's not even separated into cuts, it's all just one side of the record. I chopped it apart with a pair of dull left-handed scissors and offer one of the tunes below.
