Hey!

I suppose I should take a break from my rampant Facebooking to post something here. Like this piece of absurdism, for instance:

[via Koala Ninja.]

Moyssi

For anyone who grew up in the metro NY/NJ area in the 1970's, the Capital Theater in Passaic was the place to see rock and roll. The 1920's relic was purchased by legendary concert promoter, John Scher in 1971 shortly after the legendary Fillmore East closed its doors.

James D. Moyssiadis aka Moyssi has lovingly created this website as a tribute to the theater and the fabulous concert programs produced by Churchmouse/Moyssi for John Scher Presents from 1977 through 1984 and, briefly in 1975, for Clone The Word, Inc. Most of these programs feature an original cover illustration by Moyssi, created specifically for each concert.

The Capitol Theatre, according to Billboard Magazine in 1980, was “the No.1 concert hall in the nation under 6,000 seats.” The Capitol had the best acoustical environment (2-inch thick acoustical padding on the interior walls), an unobstructed view of the stage from every seat and the best bands in the world, including The Grateful Dead, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones—and just about everyone else who toured in the 70s and 80s. The Capitol Theatre was also the longest running concert hall in rock'n'roll history.

"If the theatre had defects such as its miniscule stage, the lack of a fly loft, and dressing rooms unfit for anyone other than mad dogs and Englishmen, it also had great qualities that included an unobstructed view of the stage from every seat, and a peerless acoustical environment due to 2-inches of painted acoustical padding on all the interior walls—and no balconies to interfere with the sound waves. Most importantly, the Capitol Theatre carried on a great tradition established by Bill Graham at the Fillmore East: the best bands, the best crews, and the best place to enjoy a great show."

New Riders of The Purple Sage - Date: October 31, 1975 / November 1, 1975

Poco; Tom Waits / ZZ Top; Slade - Date: November 14, 1975 / November 15, 1975

Frank Zappa - Date: October 13, 1978

My memories are somewhat hazed by the chemicals and years but I do recall seeing acts like Mountain, J. Geils, Hot Tuna, NRPS, David Bromberg, Queen, The Climax Blues Band and of course the Dead at the Capital. Incredible stuff.

Long live the show. Enjoy more at the site

Ned Bunnell posted these great photos of Mexico recently to his blog...

But for the record, I would like to point out to those worried about illegal immigration that Mexicans are apparently better spellers of the English language than we are.

Cowtown II

2.5 miles from my house.
Rodeo every Tuesday and Saturday from May to September. Real sittin' on planks old school. PETA protesting out front - divorcee's in Members Only jackets with a 12 pack inside. We had a national Quarter Finalist PBR winner. Kinda matrixes well against Tara LaRosa

the ass kicking kick boxing queen
(my son watched her destroy another woman at a UFC fight that he went to with his Crime Scene Cleanup company owning boss) who lives about the same distance from my house.

Also every Tuesday and Saturday there's the flea market which, on Saturdays, is a lot of knockoff crap, but also a lot of stuff from Africa and South America. Tuesdays they open the field, and those folks that travel the flea market circuit from sunny to chilly climes use Cowtown as a "filler" for those times when bigger stronger flea markets (New Castle, Columbus Sale, Englishtown) aren't open. In spring you can find stuff that is intended for New Hampshire, in fall, stuff that's intended for Arizona, thereby sustaining its coolness (Cowtown's) via changing inventory.

Cowtown gave birth to this video for reasons explained in the original post:

Here's a link to examples of shit sold there:

Cowtown

I'm kinda a sucker for silly tie-ins like this.

During my research for Cowtown BBQ, I found out that New Jersey has a RODEO! I want to go, if for no other reason than to say I've gone to the rodeo. It's important to be well-rounded.

The musical tie-in..."Cowtown" by They Might Be Giants. In high school, a friend made a video of this song, with another friend and I "square dancing" near a cow. That footage is lost. So, I Leave you with them doing it live at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on 1/31/09.

Navy Guys Whacking on 55 Gallon Drums, and Dancing Under Sticks

Limbo music is inane to begin with, but Jimmy Crack Corn Limbo? Row Row Row Your Boat Limbo? Well, that's just Dada poetry. When you add steel band versions of Greensleeves and Stars and Stripes Forever on the other side, you've got Island kitsch magic. Get it here.

SwaG! Dance Party!

Dance Parties are breaking out all over Kalamazoo, Michigan. It’s like the NYC underground disco scene,1973. It seems like all the old WIDR “DJs” have their own turntables and mixers. Kazoo people, bored out of their nuts, get freaky on the floor.

The above photo shows how they shake it in this town: with high-energy spasticity.

Mr. Guano knows how to make the kids move with just the right cuts from hit-makers like the Art of Noise, ELO, Gary Glitter and the Bay City Rollers...

Yes, this all leads to a three-hour recording of an actual radio broadcast.

Playboy Archive

It's almost unfathomable, but 53 issues of Playboy have been scanned and are online at Playboy Archive. You have to download the Microsoft Silverlight software (it's both PC and Mac compatible, and I didn't have any problems.) Wowsa.

Mouth and McNeal

Yes, I might have mentioned them before: one of my favourite Dutch pop duo's from the seventies: a quick peek at the production process of their record company.

posted by beeld en geluid

The complete song Hello-A

Mouth & MacNeal was a pop duo from The Netherlands. They were formed in 1971 when producer Hans van Hemert brought together the solo talents of Big Mouth (born Willem Duyn, March 31, 1937) and Maggie MacNeal (born Sjoukje van't Spijker, May 5, 1950) together. Big Mouth had previously sung in a number of 1960's bands, including Speedway. In contrast, MacNeal had had an unsuccessful career as a solo artist.
The duo released their first single almost immediately. This first single, 'Hey You Love', reached #5 in the Dutch Top 40 while the next two singles 'How Do You Do' and 'Hello-A' both reached #1. In 1972 Mouth & MacNeal reached the top of the charts all over Europe, with their fame (especially in Germany) reaching almost hysterical proportions. "How Do You Do" was made popular in the United States by legendary radio personality Jim Connors. The song eventually reached #8 in the U.S. in July 1972. This propelled their 1972 US album How Do You Do into the Billboard 200 (US #77). More hit singles followed in 1973, and in 1974 Mouth & MacNeal represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest placing 3rd, behind ABBA and Gigliola Cinquetti with their song "I See a Star", which went on to be a #1 hit in Ireland.

In December 1974, shortly after their success with "I See a Star", Mouth and MacNeal suddenly parted ways. Big Mouth and his wife Ingrid Kup continued and formed the act Big Mouth & Little Eve, whereas Maggie MacNeal went back to solo performing.

"Big Mouth" Willem Duyn died from a heart attack in his hometown of Roswinkel on December 4, 2004 at the age of 67.

Yo Ho Ho!

Avast there mateys, is this the best Olan Mills family portrait of all time or what? Better still....there's music that goes with it too!

Frankie Goes Wild

Head on over to The Hound Blog and check out Sinatra's only attempt at one of the things he hated most:

Issued in '52 it wasn't so much a rock'n'roll fad disc as an attempt to weld Sinatra onto the sax driven rhythm and blues sound of guys like Roy Brown, Wynonie Harris and Big Joe Turner who were starting to find a market with white teenagers. Lyrically it's quite a tongue twister (in fact I think the lyrics are genius--- "run your flim flam fingers through my greasy hair"! Indeed!). By the final verse you can actually hear Sinatra getting madder and madder as he struggles with the overboard alliteration. Shit, Don & Dewey or Esquerita could have recorded this one.

Yep, I saw Frankie twice. I had tickets to the Frank, Dean, Sammy reunion too, but Sammy died.

SwaG! Expands Broadcasting Network to Soddom (Gomorrah Next!)

Reno, Nevada, A warm and exotic wonderland in Bat Guano’s mind, full of gambling and legalized prostitution.

During this broadcast, SwaG! got a call from a listener in Reno, more evidence that the program is forming its own network via internet streaming. Mr. Guano imagined Reno to be a warm and fun-filled place, which made him twitchy. Twitchy and resentful. Because he was in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where it was snowing and cold that early March evening. And he had no games of chance nor prostitutes to turn to....

All this eventually degrades into obscenities directed at the late poet Carl Sandburg, and a three-hour audio file of some weird radio program. Clicky-clicky.

Any look at the history of trading cards has to include Japanese menko cards, used both for games and trading. I'm fond of the menko cards I found at a flea market in Nagoya years ago of sumo rikishi and yakuza. Yes, I've posted the sumo before here, but TOUGH, it's a great excuse to link to the other great cards at the above site.

Campos and Nole

Can't afford to go to the Poconos this year? I feel your pain. Then you might need a copy of a 1973 album recorded by small time lounge act Felipe Campos and Renée Nole, who wowed seventies audiences at the Nippersink Manor Resort and other venues in Carson City NV, Omaha, and Bangkok (?)--the boffo reviews are right there on the back album cover. Their versions of It's Not Unusual, Snake, and Song of Israel will surely make you forget the originals, at least temporarily. Snag it here, quick, before you come to your senses.

The Trilogy

I received a press release a few days ago from Joe & Darlene Lacey (of the awesome sites: Maiden Wine - The Ultimate Leonard Nimoy Music Site and The Candy Wrapper Museum):

"One of the great pleasures in life for music lovers is not so much to find a great recording, but to have a great recording find you. We first heard "Two Sides of the Trilogy" through a vinyl sharing site(*). The album was rare: it was a souvenir made to be sold at the Trilogy's South Florida shows in 1973, and only 500 copies were pressed.
Intrigued by its high level of musicianship and the charisma of its three members, Kurt, Lori, and Ike, we decided to create a tribute site to the album and the band. We contacted Kurt and Ike and they turned out to be two great guys: they collaborated with us to make an awesome website, and personally digitally re-mastered the album to CD with all new artwork and liner notes.
Sadly, Lori, Kurt's wife and lead singer, passed away a few years ago. The memory of her, however, lives on in her music, which is beautifully restored for this release.
Be sure to check out
the Trilogy's site for samples of their cool lounge music, two free downloads, stories about the band, the 70s South Florida music scene and lots of groovy photos! And don't forget to order a copy of this collectable CD!"

Check it out!!

(*) Note from mrdnatefontana: Maybe Joe and Darlene, just like I did, found this precious gem through my fellow Swede Magnus' wonderful site Bellybongoback in 2004 (now since long closed)?

Bat Guano's Old Time Radio Broadcast Pokes A Loving Finger Into Hearts The World Over

Photo stolen from here.

The good people of Kalamazoo county gathered ‘round the Marconi machine in their sitting parlors to hear the comforting and elucidating broadcast of Bat Guano’s SwaG! on another Wednesday evening last week.

It did vibrate the audio horn so!

Bartholomew turned to Bettethelia and said, “Betty! Did you hear what Bat Guano just said? He said he’s b’castin’ from the territories of Alaska to the Sunshine State of Florida! Right this very minute! We can’t even get ‘IDR in Augusta on our auto receiver whilst automobubblin’ to the Barking Frog. What kind of radios do you reckon them folk is usin’ way outside of the county?”

...where the hell is this going? Oh, it's another episode of SwaG!, the radio program.

The Mysterians

Trailer (Flash Video 01:43) for The Mysterians (Chikyu Boeigun, 1957, Toho Pictures). "...A giant robot is found wreaking havoc in Japan. Coinciding with the chaos, a seemingly benevolent race of aliens from the planet Mysteroid arrive to offer their assistance and friendship. The Mysterians ask for a small section of land and the right to breed with Earth women to repopulate their planet. The humans are offended by the request and declare war, discovering that it was the Mysterians that sent the killer robot in the first place." From Nippon Cinema - Japanese movies for the masses.

FABCHANNELS STOPS

Amazing news
The "Paradiso" is surely a nice venue. I never went there but i saw Fabchannel and it was great.

"After nine passionate and beautiful years of sharing the most amazing concert recordings with you, Fabchannel is stopping. A great number of record labels still won't allow us to record their artists. This prevents us from offering what we need to keep Fabchannel alive.
We want to sincerely thank you for all support through the years! It has been an amazing time, but unfortunately this is where it ends.
With a bleeding heart we're pulling the plug of our online archive Friday 13th of March. Until that time, enjoy your favorite concerts and who knows we'll meet again."

Justin Kniest, CEO

Amazing news, amazing reason to close the service, sometimes i must confess that i don't clearly understand what is the true aim of a record label.
Am i that old fasionned ?
Bye Fabchannel, you achieved a tremendous work over the years, thank you.

More Fugs

Ms. Bolton has probably covered this in spades to date but I figure a second or third helping can't hurt.

The Fugs were the brainchild of one Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg in 1965.

I can vividly remember my first experience hearing the Fugs. It was 1969 and I was a mere 14 years old. Our neighborhood freak, Wesley, who taught us how to smoke cigarettes at 10 and pot at 12 was toking some fine bud and listening to The Fugs first LP. I gotta believe "I Couldn't Get High" was in constant rotation and for all the wrong reasons, we loved it.

Of course after receiving a "gift" from our esteemed pal baikinange, I went "Utubing" and found this clip which sums up the Fugs experience.

Speaking of the Garden of Allah ...

Should you long for the days of lore, why not check out Clifton Guilaroff's blog?
Scion of famous Hollywood ancestry, Cliff lives with his mother (the former 1950's lead-pencil heiress and socialite, now penniless lush) Cobina Cugat, bandleader husband Rusty Kadiddlehopper, their two cats Poppers & Rage and Basset Hound Pigtails in a one bedroom apartment in the North Valley. Sadly, Cobina believes it is 1954 and that she and her son still live in an impossibly lavish villa at the Garden of Allah Hotel in Hollywood. To make his life easier, he is doing nothing to change that belief.
Clifton will keep you up to date on Hollywood history, the Garden's residents, and other flotsam at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights. Oh, and he sells vintage jewelry, too.
