Judy Henske - Wade in the Water

uploaded by Cebu:

Judy Henske (born 20 December 1942, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin) is an American singer and songwriter, once known as the Queen of the Beatniks. She moved to California in the early 1960s, singing in coffee houses in San Diego and Los Angeles, and working with the likes of Lenny Bruce. Moving on to Oklahoma, she worked with ex-The Kingston Trio member Dave Guard and the Whiskeyhill Singers, recording an album. After they disbanded she returned to Hollywood, gaining the attention of Jac Holzman and Elektra Records, for whom she made three solo albums. The first of these highlighted her offbeat humour in her live performances; the second featured the song High Flying Bird, a minor hit later covered by many bands of the era including Jefferson Airplane. During this time she worked extensively as a solo singer in New York, working among others with Woody Allen (with whom she had a relationship the character Annie Hall, born in Chippewa Falls, was allegedly inspired by her). After a failed attempt in the mid-60s by Mercury Records to present her as an all-round entertainer, she returned in 1969 with her husband Jerry Yester (previously of The Lovin Spoonful), making the remarkable baroque / psychedelic folk album Farewell Aldebaran for Frank Zappas Straight Records. The pair then formed a band, Rosebud, making a further album before they separated and Henske returned to domestic life with new husband, musician Craig Doerge.

Lost in the supermarket

Lost in the supermarket is the new Aperitivo radio show. Exciting adventures in the world of mass consumption, a true western with a lost isolated heroe, fancy girls, revenge.
This week we had the musical help from Franco Micalizzi, a fantastic sonic wild ride with Quicspace "the precious mountain", Blossom Dearie, Marva Withney and a lot more thrilling pop and electronic delights.

Once more this picture is the work of the hilarious Glen Baxter.

... are taking place.

We have a new logo/masthead!
It was created by our great artistic team member Lex10.

I was running tired of the old one and thought it was time for a change.
We have also changed the label buttoms (but that is still a work in progress as long as the brainstorm continues to roar ...).

Some other changes will continue to roll out during the hours and days to come.

It's still the same old blog though.

Donna Theodore - Femininity

Donna Theodore is an American Actress and singer who first came to attention as a headliner at many famous nightclubs during the 1960s including the Copacabana, The Fountainebleau Hotel, the Fairmont Hotel, and the El San Juan in Puerto Rico. Theodore won a Theater World Award and Drama Desk Award and received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the 1975 musical Shenandoah (musical). Theodore is the first person to receive a Drama Desk award in the category of Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. Prior to the 1974-1975 awards, Drama Desk awards did not make distinctions between the sexes or musical versus dramatic roles. Theodore's success on Broadway boosted her career and led to concerts at major performance venues such as Carnegie Hall. In concert, Theodore has performed opposite such stars as Bob Hope, Bill Cosby, Jerry Lewis, George Burns, Bob Newhart, George Carlin, Joan Rivers, Rich Little and many more. During the 1970s and 1980s, Theodore appeared regularly on many different talk and variety shows on television including Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas, and Merv Griffin. She is perhaps best remembered for her appearances with Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show, making more than 50 guest appearances. Theodore also created the role of Kitty Merritt on the daytime drama Search for Tomorrow, appeared in the television movie Face of Fear, and acted in numerous other popular TV shows like B.J. and the Bear, Family Medical Center, Lanigans Rabbi, and Rosetti & Ryan.[1]

" ... As the title suggests we are moving away from lush cocktail parties, stewardesses and martinis for a while to go down one flight of stairs into the world of swingers, beatniks, hipsters and cool cats. Welcome to the Electric Psychedelic Swingers Pussycat Club downtown London, were we play psychedelic rock and pop from the late '60s and early '70s until the break of dawn. ..."

Photos of TV

I sometimes find that taking pictures of the TV is helpful in sharing my amazement at the weirdness the matrix has to offer us over at GlyphJockey. I'm not above TV, sneering at the common folk, haughty in my self-assured cathode ray celibacy, on my way to the regatta with a volume of Proust under my arm, my imaginary mortarboard teetering atop my healthy pulsating cortex.

Nope- I watch TV.

So I was really amazed to see this wonderful (Notice the italics? - That's me gushing...) collection of photos taken off the TV by bigshot writer Mike Sacks. I got sucked in and would have peed if I didn't have such a robust urethra. (ability to write name, put out fire, etc.) You will love it, or I will hate you. No, really I won't. Link at pic and link, link followers.

Lynn Carey - Mama Lion

If Lynn Carey's voice sounds familiar, that's because she did the Carrie Nations vocals on the "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" soundtrack. She could easily have been a Russ Meyer chick, and was a Penthouse Pet, but preferred to keep on the music side with her group, "Mama Lion" (you can see her on the cover in the video, suckling a lion cub!)

A Sinatra Memory

"Would you like a bullshot Mr. Rome?"

Since PCL's on a eentsy Sinatra jag:

First of all let me say I love Frank Sinatra. Not his music, really, because I'm a closed minded jerk who is from the rock and roll era or later (It's OK music, but what am I, some kinda metrosexual Sopranos wannabe? Fuck no), but his movies. From Here to Eternity, The Man With The Golden Arm, Von Ryan's Express, Suddenly, The Manchurian Candidate, and my two top faves, Tony Rome and Lady in Cement......... I think they're all great.

But when I was kid, I used to just hate him. He was establishment, and a pig, and he came from a bullshit world that the new world order of peace and love would crush. ...Ah, yoot, as they say in North Jersey. Since then, as I continue to not croak, my mind has opened, like the ribs of a deer that has been hit by a car and is half eaten by buzzards while lying in the sun. Reluctantly, in a dessicated fashion, but allowing more access to those who insist I expose my delicious vulnerable underbelly. And like Sinatra - so now I do.

So, when I was first married, I read His Way by Kitty Kelly. I was shocked and pleased to read just how demonic an individual he really was, like a lone Roman orgiast, or a vampire. It confirmed my suspicions. Joey Bishop acting as apologist on Phil Donahue only helped. It was exquisite Hollywood Babylon-esque debauchery and decadence.

My mother in law, a new friend if you will, at the time, loved Frank Sinatra, and nearly worshiped the man. She refused to read or believe the book, and when we told her about this quote from Peter Lawford:

"one time at a party in Palm Springs he got so mad at some poor girl that he slammed her through a plate glass window. There was shattered glass and blood all over the place and the girl's arm was nearly severed . . . Frank paid her off later and the whole thing was hushed up, of course."

She replied,

"Oh he was just trying to relax............she was probably bothering him."

Fly me to the moon

The real thing! Ah. Refreshing.

The Slim Gaillard Vout-o-Reenee Dictionary

As a public service to PCL's own Mr. Dante Fontana, whose embarrassing showing in the jazz quiz he posted below compels me to offer a little remedial training in the art of hiptitude (though I admit my sorry total of 64 only puts me on the outskirts of Squaresville). Who better to show us the way than the voutest of the voot, Mr. Slim Gaillard himself.

The owner of this copy of Slim Gaillard's Vout-o-Reenee Dictionary asks on his site if anyone knows how much it's worth. Well, pal, it's worth NOTHING (or translated into vout, "tee-but-tar"), so I'll send you $5 for postage and you can send it to me PRONTO (there appears to be no word for quickly or right away in Slim-speak, which seems appropriate). Reet?

Now let's enjoy Slim and Bam (and Scatman Crothers, I believe....10 extra points for me for knowing!) performing the very superior "Dunkin' Bagels o'Voutee Mac Vootee", and feel the ambient hipness wash over our nerdy little souls.

the Crystal Clear Piano

"Let's stay for a while in the Black Forrest. This is Stuttgart calling, where Horst Jankowski made his way before leaving for the RIAS Berlin in 1975. His wonderful creations of Sound and Singers climed the charts between 1964 and 1970. Jankowski convinced the German audience of the existence of a musical style beyond Schlager and Classics but actually, he succeeded in the US where people called him the Crystal Clear Piano from the Black Forrest. ..."
