R.I.P. Hans Arnold 1925-2010

Hans Arnold, the Swiss-Swedish illustrator and artist passed away yesterday. For Swedes my age or around he was probably the most well-known and respected illustrator. His always characteristic gothic inspired monsters and nude ladies will be a part of our souls for the rest of our lives. Hans illustrated numerous children and kiddie books. But his most famous work is probably the cover art work for Abba's Greatest Hits.
Some of his works can be viewed here.

Update: Some more Arnold here.

Passports to Adventure.

Alice B. Toklas (whom we still love)

Here's a Flickr set of passport photos of early 20th century writers, artists, actors and other creative types, which I culled from the Twitter machine. My favorites are probably Isadora Duncan (who is wearing a scarf, naturally), Man Ray trying to look badass and the Marx Brothers without their stage costumes. Very cool.

Jackson Pollack

Today is his birthday.

In November 2006 Pollock's "No. 5, 1948" became the world's most expensive painting, when it was sold privately to an undisclosed buyer for the sum of 140 million dollars.

Ok, this little pictures doesn''t do it justice. Pollack's work is rather large.

Ron Mueck

A friend sent me information about Ron Mueck- a former model maker for movies who has taken his skills at process in the direction of sculpture for sculpture's sake.

While this may be everywhere, perhaps some of you have not seen his work yet:

The Body As Machine

In the 1920s, German artist Fritz Kahn was working in the midst of an era of industry - so what better time to look at the human body as a literal machine.

More illustrations here and here. Found via Moon River.

I Heart Mamika!

Via Do You Speak English: He is the photographer, she is the model. It's beautiful, weird and funny.

French artist Sacha Goldberger wisely incorporates his mother. Make friends with Mamika on MySpace. Or watch her in action:

Lenticular Art of Chris Dean

Chris Dean's lenticular art has grown out of his installations involving 3D imagery. The work has a very outsider feel, with the added coolness of being flicker pictures. I want this. I want to do this. His description of the path to these works is actually interesting- devoid of Art in America-speak.

Zogg

Once again, apologies up front if this is just so common you've all seen it time and again. But I searched PCL for a link to it and it looks like it was never posted. Either way, time to review:

My Little Golden Book About Zogg

A classic Eloise Wilkin work retold in a new and disturbing way to chilling/funny effect.

Delicious.

Some YoYo Stuff: An observation of the observations of Don Van Vliet

"Don van Vliet, alias "Captain Beefheart", is one of the most influential, misunderstood, talked about, admired, copied, treasured, loved and quoted musicians and yet he is still an obscure and mysterious artist. His quite abrupt artistic transformation from working with a microphone to a paintbrush in 1982 and his consequent move from the desert to the ocean meant even less direct contact with the outside world than before. Subsequently there is very little information about Don from this time onwards and this short black-and-white film made in 1993 is an unique opportunity to see and hear this unique man. The film is approximately 13 minutes long, directed and photographed in black and white"
