R.I.P. David Hess

David Alexander Hess started out his incredible career as a songwriter and musician. At the age of 15 he was the first to record Otis Blackwell's "All Shook Up". Later picked up by Elvis.
His stage name was David Hill.

He also penned (with Aaron Schroeder) "I Got Stung" for Elvis and then also co-wrote and recorded "Speedy Gonzales", later made famous by Pat Boone. He now called himself David Dante.

He then went on to record 2 solo albums for Kapp Records.
At the end of the 1960s he co-wrote the rock-opera 'The Naked Carmen' with John Corigliano.

In the 1970s he also started to act in movies. His first major achievement was as Krug Stillo in Wes Craven's 'The Last House on the Left' in 1972. He also penned and recorded the score for the movie.

In 1977 he starred in the italian crime 'Hitch-Hike' as the psychotic and sadistic hitcher.

In 1980 he had a seat in the director's chair himself and directed 'To All a Good Night'. Apparently a typical 1980s teenage horror flick.

He also starred or participated in several other horror and/or cult flicks, such as Ruggero Deodato's 'House on the Edge of the Park'; Craven's 'Swamp Thing' and in later years 'Zodiac Killer'.

I do, I do. Now, rest in peace.

R.I.P. Larry "Wild Man" Fischer

His name was Larry.

It is reported that Wild Man Fischer has passed away. Sad news. He will be missed.

Years ago PCL posted both 'Wild Man Fisher and Smegma Sing Popular Songs' and the unforgettable 'An Evening with Wild Man Fischer'. They are probably still available on at least one of the links supplied. Listen to them.

Tura Satana on Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill

Tura Said

I'm not going to get into a big 'in memoriam' - there's plenty of those going around now. Tura was a real kick (to put it mildly), so here's an interview I did with her in 2009 for my blog. I had readers send in questions. She was having a ball! We did this at my house and sat side-by-side.

MJ:Tell her we LOVE her!

A: Thank you!

No.6 said...

Ask TURA : "Just do it!" is her motto, what was the first thing she's done with that in mind?

A: Let's see. I got married. I married a cop (laughs.) Basically just about anything I do is what I want to do. Who can tell me no?

Mavis Martini said...

I'd like to know who HER idols are! Who does she look to for guidance?

A. My father and as far as a female idol, I don't have one. I made my own (laughs.)

My second "ask Tura" is, to match more the DL Trade Mark : when she was a lil' girl, what was the first woman artifact she remember using to play a woman?

A. Being a Jehovah's Witness, my mother wouldn't let me wear makeup. So it was a cigarette.

My Third "Ask Tura"is, what is her first personal physical LA/Hollywood male souvenir?

A. He wants to know who was the first star I ever screwed? Tony Bennett.

Muscato said ... Ask her for some good Ted "Astrozombies" Mikels dish!

A. It depends on how high my heels were when I stepped on him.
Me: do you want to want put that on there? Tura: yes.

The Stewardess asks: What do you wear to bed?

A pair of lace panties. Even on cold nights.

Anonymous: What was the first club you worked at?

A. The first club I worked at was the Club Rendezvous, in Calumet, Illinois. The first club I ever danced in, not as a stripper, was the Tropicana, on Sunset Boulevard, in Hollywood.

DL: What was it like working with Dean Martin?

A. Great. He was a fun person to work with, and he was very easily surprised, especially when I did a backbend and was twirling my tassels without a bra on (laughs.) He got the biggest kick out of that. I told if I could rev 'em up fast enough I could fly! That day on the set - we had a closed set where supposedly nobody was supposed to come on because I was doing my strip routine - well, we had a huge audience of everyone from all the different offices! They found out when I was going to do it, and they were there!

What lot was that on?

A. That was on the main lot at Paramount Studios, Stage 3 or Stage ... not sure, but it was a huge stage. They had the Tijuana nightclub set in there. And I really would like to know who told all those people! For a closed set, we had Robert Mitchum, of course Billy Wilder (laughs) and (director) William Wyler and a lot of the different stars that were working at Paramount then. Everybody was there. I told the director Danny Mann I should have collected a fee for this and he said, "No, I oughtta!"

You were in "Our Man Flint," too, right?

A. I actually played both the dancers in the nightclub. I played the first and second one in the Marseilles nightclub. James Coburn was very funny - he was a hilarious person. He's the one who went around 20th Century Fox telling everyone that I was going to be doing the routine. Daniel Mann was also the director on that film! It seemed like every place I ever worked Danny Mann was around. He was a sweetheart. He was afraid to make love to me. We used to sleep together. But we didn't ever make love. There's a lot of weird people in Hollywood!

R.I.P. Hans Arnold 1925-2010

Hans Arnold, the Swiss-Swedish illustrator and artist passed away yesterday. For Swedes my age or around he was probably the most well-known and respected illustrator. His always characteristic gothic inspired monsters and nude ladies will be a part of our souls for the rest of our lives. Hans illustrated numerous children and kiddie books. But his most famous work is probably the cover art work for Abba's Greatest Hits.
Some of his works can be viewed here.

Update: Some more Arnold here.

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

RIP

Since Holy Diver was the hymn of 80s Heavy Metal and the passing of Ronnie James Dio I think it's only right to salute him in the most proper way.

R.I.P. Bo Hansson

Bo Hansson, the Swedish organist and composer has died.

He was probably most well known for his 'Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings' and for being one part of the duo Hansson & Karlsson (their rare flexi Ep's is a part of one of PCL's compilations here - you can also see some groovy clips with the band here in this swedish tv special).
His music and his vision definitively deserves to be more recognized.
R.I.P.

RIP, Ellie Greenwich.

Wonderful '60s songwriter Ellie Greenwich died yesterday. Her work included gems like "River Deep, Mountain High," "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Chapel of Love." Iron Leg has a nice little tribute post that includes a couple of her less-known songs.

Clip Shows Les Paul Inventing Modern Music

Les Paul died yesterday, as you probably know. Not only did he design the first commercially successful soldibody electric (made in my hometown of Kalamazoo, Mich. until Gibson abandoned us in 1984), he invented multi-track recording. Instead of just recording music, he used recording processes in making sound that musicians couldn't do alone.

You could blame him for over-produced Auto-Tuned crap, but that would be like blaming the inventor of gunpowder for Hiroshima.

Lennart Persson (1951-2009)

Lennart Persson, the single most important Swedish music journalist passed away a few days ago.
US had Lester Bangs. England had John Peel. Us Swedes had Lennart Persson.
Now all these good and relentless passionate missionaries are gone.
The music and the art, though, lives on.
There's a tear in my beer.

Tack för Larm, Feber, skivtips, och ett alltid ungt och nyfiket sinne.

RIP, Jimmy Carl Black.

I was saddened to learn today of the death of Jimmy Carl Black (the Indian of the group). He was always one of my favorite Zappa sidemen, and one of the biggest reasons the Mothers were such a fun, hilarious group. I'll definitely be giving "200 Motels" and "We're Only In It For the Money" some spins tonight in his honor.

Here he is as Lonesome Cowboy Bert from "200 Motels":

And here he is more recently, performing "Trouble Everyday" with the Muffin Men, a gang of former Zappa sidemen who are keeping FZ's music alive:
