The Swingin' Eye

Si Zentner - The Swingin' Eye

The album also has a great version of "Little Jazz", the tune written for Roy Eldridge when he was with Artie Shaw's band.

Hold that Tiger!

Speaking of The King Sisters here is a clip of them with Alvino Rey and his orchestra doing their (quite hysterical) version of the jazz standard "Tiger Rag".

Music lessons, part one: swing

I'm not sure how long this series will last, but let's give it another try to exert my obsession to teach people about music the online way. I will do my best to find a few guest teachers on youtube a.o.. The first one is Artie Shaw. He'll teach you everything there is to know about swing, at least according to Artie Shaw. Please pay attention to the vocal art of Helen Forrest (April 12, 1917 – July 11, 1999) at 4:08 and the fantastic piece of 'call response' right before crossing the finish.
By the way, this link was sent to me by my collegue Ineke Vlogtman who owns one of the most beautifull voices I've ever heard and knows how to play this instrument like no-one else can.

Sacha's Standards

Yes I know, you only like Sacha Distel as a guitarist, Mr. or Ms. Too-Hip-For-the-Room. Well, I love his vocals, and his 1962 album From Paris With Love shows his skills as a charming interpreter of jazz & pop standards.

Muy Caliente!

¡Sabroso! Great harmonies from the Cuban vocal group Cuarteto D'Aida, backed by a killer band featuring Chico O'Farrill.

Nice and Easy

I found a lot of rare pre-1950s musical gems at Nice and Easy, including this never-reissued set of 78s from Andre Previn, who was all of 18 years old a the time it was recorded. It's the perfect backdrop for a relaxing Sunday brunch. Other finds at the site included an album by the black singing cowboy Herb Jeffries, and lots of other hard to find big band goodies.

Slim Gaillard and the Velvet Fog

If there's anyone else out there who is as obsessed with Slim Gaillard as I am, you might enjoy some of Slim's tunes sung by no less than Mel Torme, backed by swingin' big band, at Scoredaddy's. Odd, yes, but delightfully satisfying. Plus, I've been needing a version of the Hut Sut Song for my very own, and that's here too.

So You Think You Know Louis Jordan

I've been listening to Louis Jordan for more years than you've had hot lunches (please pardon my Pythonizing), and always counted him in my top 10 desert island artists. So I was very surprised to find a veritable snotload of tunes I'd never encountered before from Pathway to Unknown Worlds, mostly stuff from the 50s. Damn, I need to get out more often.

Los Melódicos

Don't let the deer-in-the-headlights album cover fool you, Los Melódicos really tear up the place. At least this particular band called Los Melódicos-- a simple search turned up several bands with the same name from every possible era. Maybe it's like Menudo and they replace them every few years and keep the name. Whatever the case, this album kicks ass.

Holy crap, here's a MUCH better Los Melódicos cover from the same blog....sadly, the file has been deleted so I can't hear it...how do you say "please re-up pronto, it is truly a matter of life and death" in Spanish??

Rockin' Ghost

It's just a collection of classic, classy big band sides from one of the best of his era, Richard Maltby....and if you're planning way ahead for your Halloween mix, there's a fun little number "Rockin' Ghost" that's sure to please. Get it here.
