Shaving Cream and other delights

You may remember Benny Bell's 1940s risque novelty song "Shaving Cream" — sung by Paul Wynn — from the Dr. Demento Show or recently when WFMU's Best Show host Tom Scharpling compared the song to what 2 Live Crew used to do.
After being played by Dr. Demento the song became a Top 40 hit for four weeks in 1975, peaking at 30.

Nice and Easy

I found a lot of rare pre-1950s musical gems at Nice and Easy, including this never-reissued set of 78s from Andre Previn, who was all of 18 years old a the time it was recorded. It's the perfect backdrop for a relaxing Sunday brunch. Other finds at the site included an album by the black singing cowboy Herb Jeffries, and lots of other hard to find big band goodies.

Sir Lancelot and Zombies

Since I spent so much time playing duck and cover in the back room of my house to avoid freeloading children on Halloween, I still have a lot of catching up to do and am just now discovering some swell Halloween related (sort of) posts. Including this collection by Sir Lancelot from Zorch's Inner Sanctum which was thrown in with a bunch of zombie-themed 78s which are interesting as well.

Got Ants in My Pants

This is the kind of music I need to help me through the last few painful weeks of winter....a great new batch of scratchy old 78s, courtesy of my pal Andrea at Twindolicker's Journal.
I particularly liked "I can't Dance (got ants in my pants) by Kitty Gray and her Wampus Cats, it's hard to manage a smile before 7am, but this one brought it on.

The Softer Side of Sammy

Here's a little history lesson for those of you who think of Sammy Davis Jr. only as a Rat Pack lawn ornament, or Republican ass-kissing Candyman Smarm-King (and of course I mean that in the nicest possible way)....at one time the guy could really dance, and he did some snappy (late) big band era tunes.

Duck and Cover

Who doesn't love a blog that can respond to a reader request for popular music about the A-bomb? With not one or two tunes, but seven....from a variety of artists, including Slim Gaillard, Ray McKinley, gospel's Golden Gate Quartet, and Gene Krupa. I imagine twindowlicker is someone who has lived at the same address for a great many years. As I have found, moving around a lot and a large collections of 78s are not compatible.

A Response/Add On To "Poon is a Hug"

When I first saw this in the film "Don't Knock the Rock" my eyeballs almost fell outta my head.

Years later, I got to meet a couple of the remaining Treniers at Resorts International, in the hole known as A.C. Nice guys. seemed a little embarassed about this performance, though - perhaps it was because they had become so lounge and mature.

We did not poon upon departing, by the way........

Sin In Satin

The In Crowd tells us about a find of his: "... Polly Possum was the stage name for country vocalist Polly O'Neal. I'm not able to find much info on her (or The Dogpatch Boys) beyond her involvement with Joe Wolverton.

erence to his relationship with guitar and recording legend Les Paul. ..."
