Chinese Baseball, Who's on First?
I managed to miss this classic when it was first posted many months ago, which will surely offend those of you who think it's only acceptable to post something here before the ink on the original blog post is barely dry, for chrissake, blogging's not a pissing contest, is it? whatever. Anyway, I'm sure I can offend many many more of you by selecting this song off the album, called Chinese Baseball.

Canary to Parents: Leave the Hippie Beatniks alone!
Really this album with Canary/Duke/Fighter/Blakie should be called This is Soca! instead of This is Calypso! And this song about the misunderstood Beatnik Generation refers to hippies. Musta been a hell of a party depicted on the album cover to cause such excessive metaphor-mixing.

Re-upped Tomato
The link has expired from the first time I posted this album on this blog in 2007, but fortunately you can get this great album with saucy calypso by The Charmer, Lord Kitchener, and the Duke of Iron at listentoyourears.

Car Park
I would have never thought that there was a problem finding a place to park a car in 1950s Jamaica, but if Monty Reynolds and his Silver Seas Orchestra had to write a song about it, well, then it must have been quite an issue.Unless I'm missing some well hidden innuendo, which I suppose is entirely possible.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon is Your Father
Real vintage island music, not the tourist stuff, featuring Lord Melody, the Mighty Sparrow, and the appropriately named Brute Force Steel Band.

Spade Cooley! Spade Cooley! Spade Cooley!
Kay Cee Jones and the Cooley Chicks do a tribute - calypso style - to Spade Cooley on his show.
And here is Spade cruising on the countryside in his most cool and romantic mood in 'The Kid from Gower Gulch'. That was 11 years before he beat his wife to death.
Well, " a most unusual man", as Kay Cee Jones sang.

Hot Dogs Made Their Name
Zorch's Inner Sanctum has just posted a wonderful collection of early calypso music by Wilmoth Houdini including a song I've been looking for (for the title alone, but it's a great tune anyway):

Shut Your Mouth, Go Away....

Anyone else need a smooth samba version of Lord Melody's calypso classic "Mama Look a Boo Boo"? I sure as hell did.

ska-motion in ska-lip-so
lazy mood ... sunny day ... really don't want to work today ... you shouldn't listen to this album!
"The Hiltonaires were named for Kingston's Hilton Hotel, where they were the house band. Though not necessarily the best mento group ever recorded, The Hiltonaires may have been the most prolific, recording six LPs during mento's middle period. They also toured North America.
this LP adds an electric guitar ska chop to some tracks, but the music is really still mento in both instrumentation and repertoire (even if the word "Ska" is worked into some of the titles of familiar mento songs, like "Ska and Fall Back" instead of "Dip and Fall Back")". via mento music

Sparrow and the Girl in the Bikini

It's always a happy day when I find some good calypso I don't already own, so thanks Global Groove for making me happy.

Sir Lancelot and Zombies
Since I spent so much time playing duck and cover in the back room of my house to avoid freeloading children on Halloween, I still have a lot of catching up to do and am just now discovering some swell Halloween related (sort of) posts. Including this collection by Sir Lancelot from Zorch's Inner Sanctum which was thrown in with a bunch of zombie-themed 78s which are interesting as well.

Calypso Twist
Calypso AND twist, my double major in college. Thanks to my Facebook pal Kawentzmann Kahuna for the link, and apologies for the crappy sound.
Fashion side note, those male midriff tops are all the rage here at PCL, the boys look SO cute in them....

Island Elevator Music

Is it possible to Limbo in an elevator? Hooked on Stereophonic presents the pre-chewed sounds of Leo Addeo performing such calypso faves as "Man Smart Woman Smarter" and "Zombie Jamboree", why not give it a try.
