When Slim Met the Gipper

I love odd pairings, but this one almost made the top of my head explode. Slim Gaillard talks to George Melly about the invention of Vout, as well as a surprising visitor to Billy Berg's In LA in the 1940s. (parts 1 and 2 of the interview are pretty interesting, too).

And since we're talking about George Melly, how about a little poetry reading (found here ) of his entitled "Sounds That Saved My Life"? Which proves he was worthy of interviewing Slim.

Tell Us a Story, Uncle Jazzbeaux!

Have we all been good little hipsters lately? Great! Then Uncle Al "Jazzbeaux" Collins will tuck us all in, and tell us a hip bedtime story. Uncle Slim Gaillard is also on hand doing the all important Spanish translations-o'vouty, and Uncle Steve Allen provides the background music.

Maybe the average person doesn't want to own every existing version of Slim Gaillard performing "Chicken Rhythm", but I surely do. The owner of the blog offering Slim Gaillard Rides Again tried his best to talk me out of downloading it, but I just HAD to hear Sukiyaki Cha Cha and One Minute of Flamenco for Three Minutes. Don't you?

Slim Gaillard and the Velvet Fog

If there's anyone else out there who is as obsessed with Slim Gaillard as I am, you might enjoy some of Slim's tunes sung by no less than Mel Torme, backed by swingin' big band, at Scoredaddy's. Odd, yes, but delightfully satisfying. Plus, I've been needing a version of the Hut Sut Song for my very own, and that's here too.

Lips Page sings the praises of his pawn broker, in the 1949 recording of "I've Got an Uncle in Harlem" It's available for download here, along with songs by Cab Calloway, Slim & Slam (not Bam), Buck & Bubbles, and Pearl Bailey with Jackie "Moms" Mabley--all part of the "Stars of the Apollo" compilation.

The Slim Gaillard Vout-o-Reenee Dictionary

As a public service to PCL's own Mr. Dante Fontana, whose embarrassing showing in the jazz quiz he posted below compels me to offer a little remedial training in the art of hiptitude (though I admit my sorry total of 64 only puts me on the outskirts of Squaresville). Who better to show us the way than the voutest of the voot, Mr. Slim Gaillard himself.



The owner of this copy of Slim Gaillard's Vout-o-Reenee Dictionary asks on his site if anyone knows how much it's worth. Well, pal, it's worth NOTHING (or translated into vout, "tee-but-tar"), so I'll send you $5 for postage and you can send it to me PRONTO (there appears to be no word for quickly or right away in Slim-speak, which seems appropriate). Reet?

Now let's enjoy Slim and Bam (and Scatman Crothers, I believe....10 extra points for me for knowing!) performing the very superior "Dunkin' Bagels o'Voutee Mac Vootee", and feel the ambient hipness wash over our nerdy little souls.

Selling Out

Quick pop quiz....which is the most egregious example of commercial sellout by a respected band/artist?

No, this is not an essay test, because now mathematics has come to the rescue to definitively address this important subject with a complicated theorem.

In Sunday's Washington Post, former NPR arts editor Bill Wyman presents a scholarly article on The Shilling Effect designed to assist you in determining the heinousness of the infraction, or as he calls it, the Moby Quotient of a particular commercial sell-out. You are encouraged on the site to add your own examples to further fine-tune the results.
