Car Accident Songs: Black Car X

It's been a long time since I've posted any, mostly because I haven't a fresh supply of them. But here's a real goodie - a car accident and ghost song rolled into one! Who better to sing it than J. Frank Wilson (sans the Cavaliers, but no matter.)

Bonus: here's a plane accident tune by J. Frank, "Unmarked and Covered with Sand."

Car Crash a Go Go

As many of you know, I love car accident songs, and post them when I can find new ones. Well, my like-minded pal Howie Pyro did an entire radio show last month dedicated to them! You can download it here.

Bloodrock: D.O.A.

More than a car accident - a plane crash song! This stoner classic's from 1971 and produced by the same guy who did Grand Funk - Terry Knight. One of the Bloodrock guys redid it in the 80s and it's on youtube (disabled by request, probably because it's so bad.)
Light up or pop any old ludes in your grandparent's cabinet.
I remember, we were flying low
and hit something in the air

BJ the DJ

It's an Accident song, so not nearly what you're thinking...

Now here's some DJs that have proved memorable for me for a variety of reasons, and also have me conjecturing that they have had the pleasure at one point or another in their lives, and have also judiciously avoided an early demise unlike the subject of the song...:

Cousin Brucie, one of the 35 "5th Beatles"

Michael Tierson (center) who always seemed to catch the correct vibe of what was on the menu - an affable chap., sounded like he was laying down...

Jimmy Saville, straight from the pages of the Beano, knighted and beknighted (for his looks)

...and Soupy Sales, sire of Tony and Hunt friend to Pookie and White Fang, but who got his start in radio.

Accident Songs: "Curse of the Hearse"

Terry Teene:

Thanks to Richard Eyman - even I've never heard of this one.

When the Fireballs—a rock group with which he was performing at the time—disbanded, Terry began a second parallel career as a clown. He has performed under the names of "ToBo the Clown" and "Clownzo"; and was one of the creators and originators (with George Voorhees) of the costume, likeness, name and character of Ronald McDonald, one of the world's most recognizable trademark characters.

Accident Songs: Phantom 309

Ooh, it's Red Sovine again - one of the masters of the genre, with (almost) dead kids, of course - and a twist.

"The Girl on Death Row"

Not an accident song, though maybe it was an accident that got her there. Penned and sung by Lee Hazlewood, I've had this in my collection for ages, but it wasn't until someone brought up "Rebel Rouser" at work the other day that I remembered. I sure do love a good crime tale. Read more and dl here.

Accident Songs - Clarence Carter's "Patches"

This isn't technically an accident song per se - but "Patches'" whole life is a series of unfortunate accidents. When I was a kid, I never understood - if the kids at school made fun of him and bestowed him with his unfortunate moniker - why did his parents have to join in? Poor Patches had a lot on his plate. Check this out:

Accident Songs: The Party

The ultimate guilt-inducing song, these careless parents brush the needs of their children aside for drinking, laughing and the telling of dirty jokes. What happens is the horror to end them all. I've been waiting for this to show up on youtube, because Porter and Dolly had a huge hit with it, and performed it quite a few times on his show. I hate to deprive you of it - Dolly in her giant wig and Porter with his alien features, singing about dead kids - but we'll have to make do.

Enjoy. As a consolation prize, here's "Malina."

Accident Songs: Be Careful of Stones That You Throw

This is a Hank Williams classic, and has been done many times, my favorite being Porter Wagoner's plaintive, unblinking in-your-face version on his show. Why isn't it on youtube? I chose one of our favorite singer of accident songs, Red Sovine, because of the glee he takes in injured kids and accidents. As is the case in most of these old tunes, a homemade youtuber will have to do. Enjoy.

PS. I can only imagine the accompaniment to Red's "Crying in the Chapel" would be a fifth.

Accident Songs: "Johnny Remember Me"

A song that will give you the chills! One of Joe Meek's finest.

Accident Songs: "The Drunken Driver"

This twisted tale is my favorite accident song ever. I can't believe it even got recorded and I long to make a video of it. While I don't usually post those "pictures of the record" youtubes, this is the only way to share the illness that is Ferlin Husky's "The Drunken Driver." This song's got it all - and it's abrupt ending just leaves you, well, wanting more, in a sick way.

It's coming up on Labor Day weekend and here is a cautionary tale. Listen closely - Daddy's got a dirty little secret!

Accident Songs

I just love accident songs of all kinds. Of course, country music does 'em best, and Red Sovine specialized in the dead/sick kid genre. This one's got everything: a very bad accident (I won't spoil it), a dead daughter, and a horrible "immigrant" accident by Red. He did this on "The Porter Wagoner Show" at least twice (I keep it permanently tivo'd) and I prefer the later color version better, but for now, enjoy in all of its icky glory:

PS. This will be a new regular feature of mine.

Check out "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor" and some other odd facts that I never knew about the rockin' JH at The Devil's Music.
