Takeda puppets are go!
from astroboy1960:
Osamu Tezuka's "Galaxy Boy Troop" (aka Le Commando De La Voie Lactee) was co-produced by Mushi Studios and the Takeda marionettes. Although very popular in its time and running nearly 100 episodes, only a few fragments of the series survive. The only surviving episodes are bi-lingual; Japanese with french narration and subtitles. I took my hand at translating a segment of the French subtitles to English, so enjoy Le Commando De La Voie Lactee (roughly translated "Commandos Of The Milky Way")
The Story: Aliens have begun bombing earth from their base on the dark side of the Moon. A group of heroes led by Commander Rop & Mister 6 (his intelligent computer car) have embarked for the moon, using the last surviving spacecraft, on a mission to find and destroy the lunar base.
BTW the musical score is by Isao Tomita, his first work for Tezuka.

I couldn't resist.
It would have been better if he stayed at home, yes.

"I've been gathering these for about 25 years. I wish I had been more diligent in looking and acquiring back when I first started collecting. Nowadays many of these paper envelopes that were once used for traditional nostrums have been mostly replaced by plastic packets. I recently tried to get more Burmese examples only to find they are all plastic now."

Not Groovy Music, Hip Fun, or Cool Images
Lex11 has written a spectacular post about the visceral effect crime scene cleanup can have on a person capable of normal human emotion. Read it - it's a horrific mind-blower, from a talented auteur.
Must be his DNA.
And yes I AM exploiting PCL I guess... but it doesn't make it not good.

Cryptic Covers
Today's cryptic album cover features a hastily assembled tableau of Man Examining Harmonica and Ignoring Nearby Parasol. The music is pretty good, I especially liked Beer Barrel Polka (Barrel de Chopp).

Minstrel Pains
Children need to have a greater respect for the art forms made popular by their great grandparents, and here's the perfect educational album to that end: MFP's Minstrel Show For Children. I particularly enjoyed "Here We Go Gathering Nuts In May" and "Ten Green Bottles". And of course, a version of the perennial favorite "Teddy Bear's Picnic".

After 5 years (4)
We're continuing our series on the wm-artists that contributed to the first release Water Wind and Sails
Some of you might have noticed that the young Jelle-Jan van der Wagt, who made a mini radio-play 5 years ago, now 19 years old has made some nice videoclips for yours truly. But he does a lot of productions. Next week January 27 his latest movie "slapendrijk" will have it's premiere in the local Deltion Theatre in Zwolle. Here's the trailer:
Here's one for the sinners!!
Evil Pain Clown and Lowell Mason want you to repent before it's too late!!
Yes, we posted the cover for this ages ago, but now you can get the music!

Torps Flea Circus Tivoli Copenhagen 1956
A brief history of Torp's Flea Circus, one of the last places to use performing fleas can be found here. I never knew the performers were tethered by fine platinum wires to keep them from jumping away and sucking the blood of the patrons.
Above is the poster from the Egyptian tour of the Troupe de Torp.
What Is On The Ol' Radio Machine?
Heavens, don’t say “nothing.” Why, there are gibbering morons and jabbering blowhards, ersatz culture and artificial cacophonies, bleats of commerce and compulsations of advertisers!
The convulsions of a dying medium are wondrous to behold, though in audio form they do grow tiresome. But What’s This?!?...
And it goes on like that until the links to four episodes of Bat Guano's SwaG!, unusual radio for a mutant generation.
Daddy, Come & Get Me

Whole Lotta Golden Throats
Fish Out of Water features albums from those not necessarily known for their musical talents....such as Rocky Marciano, Arte Johnson, Buddy Ebsen, Ted Knight....granted, it's not all singing, such as the album by Kreskin. But I DID find out that Kreskin's real name was Kresge.

Bikinis y rock
Bikinis y rock (1972) has bikinis and it has rock — Mexican bands playing covers of rock hits in english. It also has telenovella queen Verónica Castro, former vedette Olga Breeskin and Manuel "Loco" Valdés.
The director also wrote Santo y Blue Demon vs Drácula y el Hombre Lobo and La momia azteca

Hans Edler
I hope Mr Dante Fontana didn't post anything about him before ... for those of you who don't know him, i urge you to listen to this true pioneer of electronic music from Sweden.
Hans Edler - Elektron Kukéso (1971) album is available via exp etc (you will find there lots of great and unique music believe me!)
About Hans Edler ...
"In the early 1960's, Edler turned into a teen idol in Sweden with his bands The Ghostriders and We 4. Later, he initiated his own record label wich during the 1970's released anything from obscure progressive rock and children's records to religious and classical music, all at a frienzied pace. He produced numerous shows for Swedish television during the 1980's and also wrote hyms and music for choirs. These days he is devoting his time to techno and dance oriented music, orginizing rock festivals with a nostalgic touch and managing young bands for export outside sweden. And that is only part of it.
However, very few people know about his short but intensive career as the wild man of vintage electronica.
The same goes for the offspring that came of it - a one-of-a-kind album named 'Elektron Kukéso' which not only contains some of the most odd sounds ever scratched into vinyl, but also seems to be the world's first computer-programmed LP in the history of rock 'n' roll, at least occording to Edler. "(from Hans Edler Myspace Fan Page)
Marino Marini
His gestures alone already make me a fan, but a little info on Mr. Marini really sealed the deal:
In 1955, he placed a newspaper advert seeking “young musicians without experience, singing in tune. If not cheerful, don't apply."
Do the Caffeteria Twist and other Marini classics here.

Commercial Break for Gymnasts
It is universally accepted that there is no more demanding sport than competitive ribbon twirling. So surely we can cut those wispy little sylphs some slack when they want to kick back every now and again and do some floor routines to piano arrangements of seventies commercials, from the very excellent album Commercial Break. Despite the fact they only consume an occasional watercress sprig and have never actually tasted a Whopper, or Sprite, or Oscar Meyer Wiener, or possibly even a Tic Tac, or any of the other products represented on the album.

Kud Idijoti
Back off, there are some Jugoslavijies in the room, and they seem PISSED. They're angry that Disco isn't dead. They're honked off at the "sistem" (sic), and in fact use a bad word hoping the "sistem" (sic again) reproduces itself. They even are so mad they do a note for note copy of Anarchy for the UK, including a very rotten bellylaugh. We're Kud Idijoti, we're Yuges, and we're cranky! Grrr.
