The Pot in the Hole Project
Today's Washington Post reports on an art project in Kampala, Uganda capitalizing on one of the city's most prevalent natural resources......potholes.
The holes are filled with a mixture of cement and plaster, then decorated by local artists.
"There are only four or five galleries in Kampala, and very few Ugandans go to them," said Roberta Wagner, director of culture at the Ugandan German Cultural Society. "We are trying to create new places for artists to display their work and show people in Uganda that art is part of life."
It's not neglect by an impoverished government, people....it's an opportunity to enjoy Art!
He's been waiting for this moment all of his life

The Wild World of Hasil "Haze" Adkins
"Short subject documentary by Julien Nitzberg about the legendary "psychobilly" musician and infamous wildman Hasil Adkins. Filming takes place in Adkins' own yard, his shack, and at various concerts. Adkins is notable for helping create an entirely new form of rock/rockabilly/country fusion, which he plays entirely by himself (with a guitar and drums simultaneously). The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra
The Vegetable Orchestra performs music solely on instruments made of vegetables. Using carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, leek-zucchini-vibrators, cucumberophones and celery bongos, the orchestra creates its own extraordinary and vegetabile sound universe. The ensemble overcomes preserved and marinated sound conceptions or tirelessly re-stewed listening habits, putting its focus on expanding the variety of vegetable instruments, developing novel musical ideas and exploring fresh vegetable sound gardens.

That makes it!
Since we recently had Bombshell Mamie over doing her take on Rock'n'Roll, we don't want to insult Jayne on that fluffy platinum blonde cloud in heaven checking us out with a real bitchy glance.
C'mon Jayne! Oooh, Baby! We still love you too. You're still soooo hip.
Jayne Mansfield sings "That Makes It!" in the 1966 Las Vegas Hillbillies (which also starred Miss Van Doren. It is said that they didn't get along at all and refused to act in the same scenes when shot. The crew was then forced to use doubles. Lovely!)

Now, as part of 365 Days Project Part 2, we can enjoy some contributed oddities not included in the online project back in 2003. Yep, outtakes!

These images are great just as they are. But build one of these just for kicks. If you do not have a pair handy somewhere.

Updated: Flickr got all hot and bothered. Patricia has posted them here now.
Greetings From Phoenix
"The Most Modern Building in the Southwest, Adams at First "
"Looking North on Mill Ave, Tempe Arizona"
"... The cards this collection are souvenirs of a Phoenix from almost 60 years ago. You can just barely make out Hayden Mill in the postcard below depicting downtown postwar Tempe. It’s the white smudge clear at the end of the right side of the street. Followers of more recent history will find the view of the Central Avenue post office more interesting. It was at this location that longtime Phoenix celebrity Cris Kirkwood beat up a security guard, gaining in the process a prison sentence and bullet in his back."

Asian Pop Princesses
Modcentric presents the Idaly Sisters-- Lolly, Linda, and Elsie, three real-life sisters from Indonesia whose cover version of American pop tunes had Asian audiences frugging up a storm in the late sixties.
And who says participating in the Miss Universe contest doesn't lead to greater things? Lotus Liew, runner-up in the 1967 contest from Singapore went on to record this album of pop numbers, which I'm sure was a huge success for her.

Daniil Kharms
The offbeat Danish site The Scampton Veterinary Optician has collected some of the works of Daniil Kharms (1905-42), a Soviet author of absurdist stories and poems published in underground magazines. Kharms was arrested for writing "defeatist propaganda", and was sentenced to a Leningrad prison prior to the siege of Leningrad, where he died in 1942.
Besides the collected Kharms stories, the Scampton Veterinary Optician also offers useful phrases in several different languages as a public service:
German:
I'm up to my knees in entrails!
Ich stehe bis zu den Knie in Eingeweide!
Hebrew:
Where can one find a reliable soap-importer?
Eifo motz'im jevuan-sabon meheiman?
Georgian:
Willingly or unwillingly, you will swallow this pill!
Nebsit tu unebliet gadaq'lap'av am abs!

Well... I must say you got off pretty easy. Life is swinging and you are a Bush bashing blogger. Sometimes bad girls can go right after all.
But, please, stick with the uke from now on will you?
(the clip is an out-take from the 1959 movie 'Girls Town'. Apparently this scene was a little bit too risque back then.)

History of Hell's Kitchen
A sentimental trip through NYC's Hell's Kitchen from today's New York Times:
The Hell’s Kitchen Gang, whom Herbert Asbury called “a collection of the most desperate ruffians in the city” in his 1927 book “The Gangs of New York” (inspiration for the Martin Scorsese film), fought constantly with the police and with rivals like the Gorillas, the Parlor Mob, and the Gophers. Members had names like Stumpy Malarkey, Goo Goo Knox, Happy Jack Mulraney, and One Lung Curran, who, when his girlfriend complained of the cold, walked out to the street, “blackjacked the first policeman he encountered,” according to Asbury, and stole his coat.
Two generations of Irish gangsters, nicknamed the Westies by the police and the press, operated in the neighborhood into the late 1980s. Murder, theft, arson, extortion, gambling, loan-sharking, liquor, drugs, nightclubs — the Westies did it all.
...(M)acabre stories about the 596 Club still float around Hell’s Kitchen. Old-timers remember jars behind the bar that held the severed fingers of guys who had crossed the Westies. There’s the one about gangsters rolling a severed head down the bar.
“I’ve heard a lot of that kind of stuff,” T. J. English, author of “The Westies,” said in a recent interview. “Normally you’d dismiss it as absurd, but since it was the Westies, who knows? That place was certainly the proverbial bucket of blood.”
I wish I had friends named Stumpy Malarkey. Goo Goo Knox, and One Lung Curran.....

Billy Strayhorn takes the "A" train
"... There’s a legend about this song. However legends in the jazz world have so much proliferated through the years that it’s hard to say whether they’re true or not. Strayhorn had already met Ellington in 1938 and had tried to impress him with his musical taste and ability on the piano. He probably succeeded in doing so, since Ellington told him they would have been in touch again in the near future. However, in January 1939, Strayhorn had still not heard from Duke. He decided to go and meet him again. He called Ellington’s office and found out he was out on a gig in Harlem. He went all the way from his home in Pittsburgh to NYC and when there he called again Ellington’s office to have directions on how to get where the Duke was playing. He had already in his pocket a composition he had prepared at home, hoping to impress the seasoned band leader. He eventually reached Harlem and got to actually play for Ellington. The old leader was obviously impressed with the song and asked him what the title was. Strayhorn was so excited he could only come up with the last thing he had heard: the directions he got from Ellington’s office to reach Harlem! That’s how the song came to be called “Take the 'A' train”. ..." (Quoted from Wikipedia Entry)

A Wonderful Life
"... On August 16th, 1977, Presley was found at his Graceland home around noon —unconscious and unresponsive — by fiancée Ginger Alden. According to never-confirmed rumors, Alden discovered Presley lying on the floor of his bathroom; all he would say later was that it was "a shameful scene." Rushed to Baptist Memorial Hospital by paramedics, Presley, apparently a victim of a prescription drug overdose, slipped into a coma, and fears were high that he might not survive. In a statement on the steps of the hospital, Presley's father, Vernon, announced to the world, "My boy may not make it." Presley himself later said he was "right next door to dead."
But the next day, Presley awoke and was discharged from the hospital three days later. He checked into Hazelden Clinic in Minnesota, a leading drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation center, where he would stay for a month. ..."
Presley and Tina Turner perform "Proud Mary" at "Live Aid," on July 13, 1985. This was Presley's first public concert appearance since June 26, 1977, at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.
In a part written specifically for him, Presley returned to the big screen as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. "Bill" was the first of Presley's roles to reference his martial-arts background. Presley hadn't starred in a film since 1969's Change of Habit.
