Private SNAFU - Booby Traps (1944)

Private Snafu learns about the hazards of enemy booby traps the hard way.

This is one of 26 Private SNAFU (Situation Normal, All F***ed Up) cartoons made by the US Army Signal Corps to educate and boost the morale the troops. Originally created by Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and Phil Eastman, most of the cartoons were produced by Warner Brothers Animation Studios - employing their animators, voice actors (primarily Mel Blanc) and Carl Stalling's music.

The ‘Shroom

"Decades ago, Dieter Rosellen dubbed an unusual piece of art acquired by his best friend as “The ‘Shroom.” He still refers to the white Italian marble mushroom cloud sculpture by that nickname. The artist’s more formal (and thought provoking) title for the work is etched into its base: ‘God’s Wind’ at Hiroshima? The sculptor, Robert Lewis—the co-pilot of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb in warfare—died in 1983 and Rosellen’s pal, author and psychologist Glenn Van Warrebey, passed away twenty-one years later. The ‘Shroom survives both of them.

This is the story of the sculpture’s evolution: From its birth in the tortured imagination of an atomic veteran to its current state—an unsettling curiosity that has to be seen to be believed. It is also a tale of the intersecting lives of the man who created it and the man who exploited it. ..."

Help needed identifying WWII starlet!

Randy Haiman needs our help identifying a sweet lady from the past. This should be our speciality!
I am lost. No idea at all. But maybe some of you out there has an idea?

"While going through old photos at my in-laws' house we came across photographs taken at the Alaskan US Army Air Corps base where my father-in-law was stationed at the end of WWII. Several of the photographs were taken during USO events.

She looks so familiar, but nobody could say for sure who she is. Sorry about the low quality, I was using an old pocket shooter. Thank you very much for any help you can offer in this matter."

How Women Fight Back

Click image for better view at source.

"There's twice the work in wartime if you've a home to keep going -- and three times the worry. Food worries, money worries, separation worries --- no one to look to or lean on. On top of that, broken sleep. No wonder it gets you down sometimes. But you can be one of the people who bear up, and fight back. How? It's simple and pleasant. There's a wonderful strength-giving tonic, Wincarnis, that enriches your blood and gives your nerves a wonderful, calm power. ..."

Umm. I'll bet!

Grandma's Trip to the Arcade

Desperate times apparently call for desperate arcade games, as evidenced by these World War II vintage arcade games "Kill the Jap" and "Trap the Jap". Not quite fun for all.
