Can I Get An Amen?

Can I Get An Amen? Nate Harrison... Can I Get An Amen? (2004, recording on acetate, turntable, PA system, paper documents, dimensions variable, total run time 17 minutes, 46 seconds). "...Can I Get An Amen? is an audio installation that unfolds a critical perspective of perhaps the most sampled drum beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break. It begins with the pop track Amen Brother by 60's soul band The Winstons, and traces the transformation of their drum solo from its original context as part of a 'B' side vinyl single into its use as a key aural ingredient in contemporary cultural expression."

Chester the Molester

Every music library needs songs of the neighborhood perv (offhand, I can only think of 2--Aqualung and "I'm a Dirty Old Man" by the Fugs). If your collection is somewhat lacking, slip on your trench coat & drive your Ford Econoline over to Crud Crud for a download of the bubblegum pop non-hit "Candy Andy" by the Shoelaces.

Tom Verlaine and Jimmy Rip - Music for Experimental Film. "...Innovative and influential musician Tom Verlaine, joined by celebrated producer and guitarist Jimmy Rip, reawaken the spirit of the avant-garde film as they perform a series of newly composed musical scores. The ground-breaking works of Man Ray, Watson & Weber, Fernand Léger and Hans Richter take on new life wrapped in scores that are by turns playful, haunting, serene and intense."

Elvis Studio

Crash-Normal Helge Reumann... Crash-Normal (2006, Gouache on wood). From Elvis Studio - works by Helge Reumann and Xavier Robel at Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York. "...Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the inaugural exhibition of Elvis Studio (Helge Reumann + Xavier Robel) from October 18 - December 1, 2007. The exhibition will feature drawings and also works on paper, sketchbooks, paintings, artists’ toys, prints, posters and record covers by the enigmatic Swiss (Geneva) artists Helge Reumann and Xavier Robel, who have done collaborative work as Elvis Studio since 1996.
Included in the exhibition will be Elvis Studio’s epic drawing 'Elvis Road,' 2001, a one foot by thirty foot scroll drawing of a dense, hypnotic, fantastical metropolis. This drawing was executed spontaneously and alternately by Reumann and Robel over a one year period, and reveals 'hundreds of mini-narratives with armed maniacs, rampaging crowds, chaotic policemen, overflowing hospitals, a forest of literal tree-huggers, and hordes of shoppers.' A new accordion-style book reproducing the Elvis Road drawing was released this year by Buenaventura Press."

Everybody's Talkin'

"Fred Neil wrote "Everybody's Talkin'" in five minutes at the end of a recording session in 1966 and recorded it immediately in a single take so he could take off and go back home to Miami. It's a great song and an unlikely standard that he probably never thought much of. It made him millions though after it was used in John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy (sung by Harry Nilsson) and was subsequently covered by at least a hundred other artists. Fred Neil spent the last 25 years of his life in Florida."
boogie woogie flu has got the original Fred Neil song as well as Harry Nilsson's more well-known rendition and some other nice versions. And a few great bonus tracks!

* Yes, that is Morgan Freeman as the groovy DJ introducing today's toetapper.
* The song was written by Joe Raposo, who's usually associated with another Children's Television Workshop show, Sesame Street. Among his best known compositions: Bein' Green, C Is For Cookie, Doin' The Pigeon and Sing.
* The lead singer is Denise Nickerson, best known as the human blueberry in the previous year's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. - JB

Prep For Hallowe'en with SEXY WITCH

A classic example of a nicely focused obsession. Sexy Witch. Kinda NSFW

For all your Sexy Witch needs.......

Where Have You Gone Nelson Briles?

With the World Series ready to kick off, it's a perfect time to load up on this cheesy collection of baseball tunes. Close your eyes and take in a deep breath. Smell the brats, the fresh cut grass, fresh hops from the cold draft beer you're holding. Ahhhhhhhhhhh America's pastime in all it's glory!

Listen to the dulcet tones of Johnny Prytko and His Connecticut Hi-Tones playing "Yaztremski Hop Polka: From the Play Pennant-Winning Polkas LP, released in celebration of the Cards winning the 1967 World Series.

Maury Will and The Base Stealers classic rendition of "Crawdad Hole" anyone?

Brace yourself for Phil Rizzuto, Tommy Heinrich, Ralph Branca, and Roy Campanella's - The Umpire.

And my personal fave from the page:
"Ed Nottle - Always On My Mind: Nottle has spent most of his career managing minor league and independent league teams. When he finally did receive a brief shot in the big leagues, he blew his savings recording To Baseball With Love. The album cost Nottle his house ("But big deal. Everybody’s got a house."- Ed Nottle). Forget about Rites of Spring, this is as emo as it gets."

It can all be had for your listening pleasure courtesy of Withdrawn Records in streaming or download modes.

It Was 20 Years Ago Today

N.W.A. (Niggaz With Attitude) were a Compton, California-based hip hop group who released "Straight Outta Compton" in 1988 (so what I'm a year off).
This release was a pioneering effort which spurred the onset of Gangsta Rap mentality that the media has grown to love to hate. The FBI and Congress were ready to wage war with the release, particular attention being paid to the single, F**K The Police.

It is one of my favorite records as it reflects the anger of urban youth without the hyperbole of today's pretenders who speak primarily of the bling and only the bling.

An extended version of the album will be released on December 4, 2007, the 20th anniversary of the original album.

As a tribute here's a haunting version of "Straight Outta Compton" sung by Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt fame, stripped down. Enjoy.

Menudo Soap

Back in the early days, the Big Lots close-out stores used to be a great place to find all kinds of off-brand retro kitsch. Farrah Fawcett Shampoo. Metallic gold Chuck Taylor hightops. Life sized fridge magnets of an entire ear of corn. And best of all, this wonderful "Natural Milled Pure Scented Soap, developed for Sensitive Skin" featuring MENUDO. Although at one time I had 5 or 6 bars of the stuff, I never tested it to see how the decal actually lasted for the life of the soap as it states on the label. Maybe the entire bar just self destructed as soon as it got wet.
