The Sounds of Intermission

Why would you wear a wire to make illegal concert recordings, and turn the tape ON at the beginning of intermission? For Seattle sound artist Christopher DeLaurenti, the real concert begins when the applause from the first act dies down. This is almost the only time you'll ever hear classical performers improvising together, practicing snippets of the upcoming performance to limber up in anticipation of the baton's downbeat.

The CD is “Favorite Intermissions: Music Before and Between Beethoven, Stravinsky, Holst” from Manhattan's GD Stereo label. The cover of the CD is a delightfully convincing ripoff of the Deutsche Grammophon album cover graphics.

Mr Dante's Inferno

Poooor Mr Dante Fontana! He has a horrible cold that is preventing him from performing his duty to humanity, i.e. providing non-stop schlocky entertainment to Internet thrill seekers (like myself), helping us avoid the messiness of leading an actual LIFE.

To get you up and blogging again, may I recommend 666 brand cold medicine, an ol’ Southern remedy that is (amazingly) still available online (though you are limited as to how much you can buy at any one time because it contains pseudoephedrine, which I believe is an essential ingredient in the production of meth). The consumption of 666, they tell me, is like tipping back a can of flaming Sterno.

Let’s see what we have in the Kiddy Medicine chest that might provide some comfort....

The Toy medicine chest Kleenex pocket pack for your sniffles....and what’s that, a Sanrio condom?? You never know what you'll find when you go snooping through someone else’s medicine chest, I guess.

We'll all pray for your speedy recovery.

Night Music

"Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. ... " (Quote from the Wikipedia entry.)

"A revelation to music fans, this show appeared and disappeared with little fanfare, being light-years ahead of the bulk of it's audience in style and substance. Every possible realm of music was boldly explored...from minimalist art-noise to traditional folk styles and everything beyond and in-between. Absolute genius, a marvelously noncommercial experiment that was doomed to failure despite itself. ..." (Quote from user comment at the IMDb entry for 'Sunday Night')

Bye bye, splusp!!!!!

Splusp!!! is being closed. It's time for me to move on. Originally I created this blog to fill the emptyness after my 52 weeks project and it served it's purpose well. It included a few projects within a project. I mention the most important ones to me: the sleevegirls project, the wet theme, Dutch pop stars, 20 splogcasts and recently birds. Besides that I occasionally mentioned special episodes of my activities at Radio Zwolle and my show Vreemde Geluiden in particular.

These and all other post are archived here. This is a first set up. It will probably be changed soon.

I'm not disappearing from the net. When there's something that I absolutely want the masses to know about, I will post it here at PCL Linkdump. Furthermore I shall be posting my compositions and songs, mixes, radioshows and audio findings at the splusp yahoo group and/or at myspace and/or wm-recordings.

"Sounds For The Space-Set!!"

RIAA is releasing Sounds For The Space-Set!!, which according to Mr. Fab over at Music For Maniacs is "a 22-song free download album of Moogs, children's records, ill beats, Salvador Dali,

lounge, disco, a robot narrator, surf, scientists, scratchy old novelty records, and at least one theremin.
Jean-Jacques Perrey, Dick Hyman, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno get it on with Frank Sinatra, Queen, Beastie Boys, and David Bowie. Robot servants mix cocktails for Sun Ra, Esquivel, and Bruce Haack in the observation deck of the space cruise ship heading towards the domed city of Las Vegas, Mars. ..."

Updated: Looks like the page was kind of shot down. Maybe this BoingBoing post was a little overwhelming. Sorry about that Mr. Fab and RIAA!

Updated II: The Page is up and running again.

Friday. Let's get this party started!

I am not feeling 100%. I'm tired and I think I am coming down with something. There is something itching in my throat.
Now, what to do??
Well... I will mix up a colorful drink. Then I will kick back in one of my armchairs, put my feet up on the table and close my eyes. And then... it happens. The fabulous Beat Girls will knock on my door, and everything will be just fine.

Racing Fever!

My hometown of Indianapolis is right in the middle of racing frenzy right now, preparing for the big race on Sunday (it IS on Sunday, isn’t it? I’ll have to ask around and see if anyone knows). Not to overstate it or anything, but I think there are virtually dozens of out of towners here to enjoy the spectacle. It’s got to be bigger than our annual Shriner’s convention, even.
As you can see from the photo, there is racing excitement in the air!!

Scott Walker info needed.

Hi, Gangsters.

A friend of mine needs help identifying the bass player on Scott Walker's "The Old Man’s Back Again" (from Scott 4).
His guess is that it is Scott himself playing that lyrical funk lines, but he doesn't know for sure.
There is no information about the personnel on the album cover.

So if anyone reading this is able to shed some light over this matter I (and my friend) will be grateful. Just leave a comment here.
And, by all means, have another listen to the song here to fresh up your memory. It's a great song.

The Shelly Taylor Touch

Pastor McPurvis has a new intriguing share online:
"... Side one of this recording is all instrumental with Mr. Taylor pulling out every Cordovox trick in the book on standards such as Exodus, Blue Velvet, and Moon River.

Side two brings Mr. Taylor’s pipes into the mix as he croons of love and Loneliness (the only Shelly Taylor original on the album)

All in all this is a fun little recording. Quirky, a little rough around the edges at times, but decidedly sincere performances from a man who is clearly passionate about what he does. ..."

Mark Seager: Martyrdom Posters

Mark Seager: Martyrdom Posters Mark Seager: Martyrdom Posters. "...Shaheed or martyr posters commemorate the lives of those killed while fighting, or as a result of military action against Israel. Images of martyr's serve a dual purpose of grieving and immortalizing. Family members display framed photos of the dead in the home, and show them regularly during the storytelling process, connecting the narration to its human essence. This dual function manifests itself in posters as well, where a picture of the resistance fighter is accompanied by his name and a short description of their life or of the efforts at combating the occupation, along with how they died. Some posters depict children who were killed by the IDF, including a description of the events leading up to their deaths." From Mark Seager, Photographer.

The Nostalgic Glass

Mercantile National Bank
"Since its last tenant left in the early 1990’s, the Mercantile had loomed like a ghost ship over downtown Dallas. Once the center of power in the city and the pride of R.L. Thornton, the building now projected a blighted and musty air through the surrounding blocks. Buyers came and went; the years and seasons passed, and slowly, people forgot even what was inside."

"When the 20-story Dallas Building was added in 1958, R.L. Thornton moved his office over there. Perhaps the view here no longer suited him.

Reflected in the mirrors was the Republic National Bank, the Competition. That building, with its rocket-shaped spire, ultimately took away the Mercantile’s title as the tallest building in Dallas."

"The boardroom sat vacant, though likely no one had ever seen a larger conference table. The few people who came to visit in those last days could fancy themselves captains of industry, and who was there to say otherwise?"

The Cleaver Sleeve

It only follows that when former Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver chose to take a creative left turn and enter the fashion industry, that he would design trousers with an upfront-and-center cock-pocket. Right? This October 9, 1975 Rolling Stone parody (not an actual ad, as some seem to think) shows Mr. Cleaver modeling his own creation, its most salient feature displayed (appropriately) on a wooden plank.
The inspiration for his design is unclear--maybe it was a male response to “burn the bra”. Ah, the 70s.

And for those of you not familiar with the history of fashion, I will mention that his idea never really caught on.

Screaming Lord Sutch

The musical granddaddy of Alice Cooper & the Cramps, Screaming Lord Sutch had the wildest stage show in Britain in the 1960s, performing gore-sodden numbers such as Dracula's Daughter and Jack the Ripper. Though he assembled bands with such notable sidemen as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Noel Redding, his albums often end up on critics’ “worst ever” lists.
Oh, and he ran for a seat in Parliament a few times, too, as the candidate for the Monster Raving Loony Party, making him a veritable Renaissance man of Kitsch.

"This Maltese easy listening effort is one of those well meaning, but deliciously inept albums where the singer is let down by the quality of the production. Joe Cutajar was a big name in Malta and first found fame as one half of Helen and Joe who warbled the Maltese entry L-imhabba (The Love) for the 1972 Eurovision song Contest. It came bottom. This was the last Malta entry to be sung in Maltese, all subsequent entries were in English. But Joe compromised and sings in both Maltese and English on this 10-track album, which, being from 1977, is awash with Moog synths, wah-wah guitar and a particularly unpleasant Salina string machine. ..."

Yes, Sharon Tate... the very alluring actress, wife of Polish film director, Roman Polanski, and fatal victim of the murderous Manson Family.

Poor Sharon... so pretty, so striking... her life cut short before she had the chance to really shine.

I think she's pretty. I dated a gal once just cause her appearance vaguely resembled her's. Thankfully, my date was never tortured to bloody ribbons like her pop culture doppleganger.

Thank goodness. That would have sucked... and I would have probably been blamed... just like that time I stole that pie off that windowsill.

Jon the Dog is Shoko Ueharaa, 35 year old Japanese woman who began her career playing the ukelele while dressed in cow-print pajamas.
