Yugoslav Album Designs

If you ever want to check out the great but bygone tradition of Yugoslav Album Designs, head over to Carniola, where there's an ongoing series featuring the most remarkable sleeves released during the history of that Balkan republic.

A truly awe-inspiring collection which goes to show that Yugoslav designers did not have to shy away from international competition and took their inspiration from all kinds of sources, including hair restorer adverts, knitting instructions and what the cat just dragged in. Unfortunately there's no music samples - with some of the exhibits I can't for the life of me imagine how the contents might actually sound like.

One of the posts refers to the bizarre tradition of fake Mexican bands and Miha Mazzini's great website on the subject, which has been mentioned here already. Mazzini also has a gallery of bizarre covers, which features some brilliant Yugoslav examples as well.
