Happy New Year!

pcl2
This is my last post this year. No links today. Just this photo.
It's Me, Mom and Dad.
This photo was shot in El Ahbab studio in Marrakech Februar 16, 1971.
I am 1 year and 2 months old.
A copy of this photo was sent to my Grandmom as a belated birthday present.

My dad died earlier this year. He was a cool man. He had issues, but still, he was cool. I loved him. I will think of him tonight.

And I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank all of you reading PCL LinkDump, You are great!

Happy New Year to all of you!

Aganju

Nick over at Jazz and Conversation writes about Bebel Gilberto's latest CD "I first dismissed this CD as a slick attempt to take advantage of the reputation and legacy of her parents. ... That said, I admit the CD has grown on me upon multiple listenings. And there are several tracks that are flat-out awesome! Aganju is my favorite. ..."
I couldn't agree more. Aganju is a beautiful, floating creation with lots of air with a very nice (sort of) accelerating hypnotique groove.
When Bebel's songs are good they are very good.
Have a listen yourself over at Nick's place.

So...

After all free music I've linked you to there must be something left in your pocket. Use this thread over at flickr for websites for donations to find a very decent way to do some good with those pennies/dollars/marks/euros/kronor/pounds or whatever you've got to spare. You'd just buy some sleazy music for them anyway... Do it.

Update: And NOW is a good time for the leader of the FREE world to think HIS war on "terrorists" over. Stop that stinking war. Get home boys! Use those billions of dollars to something good: they could actually come in handy and make a change now.

John Lennon's still writing songs. And they suck!

Our Spiritual Teachings Page: "Speaker Linda J. Polley has been channeling new songs written by the Spirit of John Lennon, formerly of The Beatles, from The Afterlife, since 9/9/99. Several of the lyrics, some with audio, have been posted on line, in Voices From Spirit Magazine, and elsewhere, over the years."

And it continues...

"Below is an audio demo of internationally known psychic Speaker Linda Polley singing and playing John Lennon's new song she channeled from The Afterlife in support of President Bush's war with Iraq. If you know somebody in the military that has a band tell them about it. They can call Linda and get the music. John would love to hear the G.I.s singing this! See the lyrics at the bottom of the page. See the main page of this website for contact information"

Obviously she is a nutcase. Or at least a very stupid server of Bush God. And singing is not one of her major skills either. But she is out of her mind and the site is dead fun! (or maybe it's a hoax - at least I hope so!) (via Sound-scavengers)

Roger Shimomura - Stereotypes and Admonitions

This series illustrates incidents of racial insensitivity I have experienced during my life. Accompanying each painting is a written description of the incident that inspired the piece. Also included in this series are events that have affected the Asian American community on a regional and national basis over the past 60 years — essentially my lifetime. - Roger Shimomura.

Roger Shimomura: " FOX network recently rescinded its decision to air The Charlie Chan Mystery Tour due to protests from the Asian American community. The old Charlie Chan movies featured ethnic stereotypes and “yellow-faced” white actors, considered offensive and to many Asian Americans. The Organization of Chinese Americans stated, “Charlie Chan is a painful reminder of Hollywood’s racist refusal to hire minorities to play roles that were designed for them, and a further reminder of the miscegenation laws that prevented interracial interaction even on screen.” " (via Cipango)

Happy Holidays greetings from Pastor McPurvis

pcl2pcl2pcl2
[Click thumbs for larg view at the vinyl orphanage]

Disturbing Santa's is the Album Cover Theme of the Week. Naturally.

Up this week in Pastor McPurvis' Weekly mp3 Talent Show: Christmas Concert by the children in the 1978 Inpatient Music Therapy Program
at the University of Michigan Children's Psychiatric Hospital!

Pastor tells us: "Up for the next two weeks is an album that is one of Pastor McPurvis’ favorites. I came across this album two years ago and instently fell in love with it. The recording is a Christmas concert performed by the children in the Inpatient Music Therapy Program at the University of Michigan’s Children’s Psychiatric Hospital in 1978. The concert has a variety of groups and soloists performing with some serious heartfelt energy and youthful exuberance. If nothing else, you really have to check out the jazz band performances, the solo pieces, and the crashing sing-a-long that makes up the last track. There is also a very touching speech given by one of the adults in charge thanking the performers and singling out two young men who had made great progress in the program. The Pastor is going on a well earned vacation so I’ll be leaving this up for two weeks. Have a great Holiday season, thanks to all of you who visit my Talent Show, and as always, Enjoy!"
Sounds weird enough for me...

Happy Holidays to the McPurvis family and enjoy your vacation!

52 Weeks completed!

Jan Turkenburg has finished the his music sharing project 52 Weeks. He sais:
"Dear everybody,It's finished. I've just uploaded the last and therefore melancholy episode of52 weeks: The Last Seven Days.

At the same time in collaboration with WM Recordings and Chenard Walcker the project's epilogue is launched [see this entry]. For the coming 7 days this will be a interactive event; it's up to you how this page will look like on Christmas Eve.

First of all, I hereby offer an opportunity to all guest curators who collapsed under time-pressure lately: send in your mp3s anyway and I'll post them on this page. I'll update each day for seven days. Also additional tracks from the other curators are welcome. Please submit your updates, next week on Christmas-eve it will be too late.
Secondly: I want to know what your favorite 52 weeks track is! let me know and I'll post the file anew here.
Thirdly: We'll start this last page with a tremendous album by Chenard Walcker [see this entry] who used samples from all 52 weeks and from other strictly Dutch music. Anyone who wants to add there own remix or 52 weeks related work to this page: you've got only one week left!

"The Russian artist El Lissitzky (1890-1941) was one of the great avant-garde figures of the early twentieth century. The Getty Research Institute holds a remarkable array of materials on Lissitzky, including book and periodical designs, his complete correspondence to his wife, Sophie Lissitzky-Küppers, photographs of his exhibition designs, his two personal address books, and additional manuscripts related to his life and work.
The exhibition "Monuments of the Future": Designs by El Lissitzky, which was on display at the Getty Research Institute from November 21, 1998 through February 21, 1999, explored Lissitzky's career as a typographer, book designer, and architect. Good Swedish music. You'll find some tasters here (look for Sagor & Swing - but please do check out some of the others too. Some are really interesting. Some are just too experimental.) and some here (early stuff and outtakes). Here's a short introduction of the band. Buy their music here.

Lynn’s Holiday Music Page

Lynn sais: "Ahhhhh, holiday music... the constant torment of every holiday season. it follows us when we're grocery shopping, in elevators, and even frightening plastic christmas trees sing to us in the mall. yet even so, once in a while in an unexpected & unguarded moment, perhaps a few of us might find ourselves teary-eyed after hearing Bing sing white christmas for the 504,321st time. or not. (ok, admittedly it might've just been pms... but does it really matter?)
Perhaps if we weren't so busy having "oh holy night" shoved down our throats every time we're put on hold we could sit back & appreciate the music which celebrates this time of year. Perhaps if we weren't anticipating hours of Aunt Beatrice kvetching about salmonella poisoning from the undercooked turkey we could enjoy ourselves. Perhaps if you hadn't invested in Mattel back when it was $45 a share you could afford to get those fancy presents..."
Oh! Esquivel! Nice! I could play around in this snow for a while I'd say! This is a very pleasent site to experience the holiday music not as a torment but as a beautiful gift. Something that could be highly enjoyable, nice and ... FUN.
Yes, It's Lynn’s Holiday Music Page!

Sitar Groovers

Chris tells us: "Sitar Groovers are a strange thing, there is no one scene or genre creating them, instead they pop up as the odd track on a Rock LP, Soundtrack, Lounge LP or anywhere really.
During the Sixties when George Harrison famously linked up with Ravi Shankar and introduced pop music to the sitar. Companies tried to cash-in. These LPs are known nowadays as Sitarsploitation. Records by numbers made for all the wrong reasons, but sometimes these turn up gems.
At its best a sitar groover will have funky drums, Moogs, Hammond organs, bongos, tablas and above all a groove underpinning the beautiful sound of the sitar.
I think I have a fair collection of "sitar groovers" so I thought this might be a good starting point which can grow as you and I discover more and more. Please feel free to email me about tracks, even send LP scans and MP3s of stuff you think should be included here. ..."

This is great! Photos of some cool citar groover covers, sound samples and reviews. What more could I possibly need to get totally hooked on this!?

CineMythology

Greek myths in world cinema: "Ancient Greek myths remain to this day an inexhaustible source of intriguing images and themes. They combine wondrous storytelling with symbolic associations that establish the collective unconscious of our civilisation. In this retrospective entitled "Cinemytholgy", our wish was to explore the winding roads taken by Greek myths and cinema (and theatre somewhat) in the 20th century. Our ambition is not to confirm the endurance of Greek mythology; that would be rather commonplace. Our main aim is to provide the springboard for ponderings on viewpoints, aspects and approaches to the eternal questions that have always been diffused through history."

Honky Tonk Photos

Donde Esta Santa Claus?

Pastor McPurvis shares some odd christmas songs: "Up this week are a few little tunes taken from some old 45s to get you into the Holiday spirit. First up is a ditty by an unaccredited chorus entitled ‘Mrs. Santa Claus’. The song features a ‘gingerbread’ musical arrangement spiced up with a ton of sound effects. It almost sounds like this is the soundtrack to a cartoon. Next, to go with the annoying children motif of our Album Cover Theme of the Week,
pcl2pcl2
we have two tunes from child star Augie Rios - ‘Donde Esta Santa Claus’ and Ol’ Fatso. Finally, two comedy songs from singer/comedian Harry Edward Stewart (a.k.a. Yogi Yorgesson) - ‘The Christmas Party’ and ‘I Was Santa at the School House’. To the Pastor’s ears, Mr. Stewart sounds like a strong influence on that Swedish office manager character that Tim Conway played on the old ‘Carol Burnett Show. Have fun and as always, Enjoy!"

"Staged photography is born out of boredom or dissatisfaction with the world. The photographer wants to see the world as a place where anything is possible-a place full of more beauty, more meaning, more play, more symbolism. In the face of Communism, these Czech and Slovak artists were escapists and surrealists-dreaming themselves into other realities and making photographic documents of them. Some of them say they are making pataphysical theatre--theatre of the absurd performed for the camera."

Hillbilly Holiday Records: Your Guide to a Country Music Christmas

"Ho, ho, ho!! Funny, isn't it, how the world is divided between people who just love Christmas music, and those who loathe it with an almost equal fervor. Me? I guess I fall somewhere in the middle... There are countless songs that are simply great to sing along with, and yet Christmas music (and the rampant commercialism of the season) inexorably lends itself to the worst and cheesiest impulses among oh, so many artists...
Anyway, recently I've had a chance to hear a lot of hillbilly holiday music, most of it from various country music artists, so I thought, what the heck -- I might as well comment on some of this stuff as well. So, to all of you elves and grinches out there: have a holly jolly holiday, and remember to get me something nice this year!"

INFORMATION

Ok.
Exactly 5 months has this blog been online today.
It has been 5 months of fun, frustration (blogger.com is not always in the mood, so to speak) and a whole lot of links. The response has been way better than I expected. Nice to find out so many cares for the important things in life as much as I do. :-)
But..
Being a blogger is time consuming (especially when you try to blog several entrys on a daily basis like I have) and takes the focus from other things in life which maybe is of importance too. Or to be frank: More Important!
It's time for a break.
And I couldn't think of a better day to start this break than today. This blog has never had as many hits as there'll be at the end of this day (316 already, going for 500!). These 3 last days there has been over 1000 visitors which is GREAT. Thank you!
And thanks to Mark for being a man of great taste and for supporting this blog.

I'll be back soon I hope. I just need to get perspective of things.
And no blog to consume me...

Your friend.

/Z aka Sebastian.

PS. But once in a while I will visit my fellow bloggers to check on them!

Tanczene

Instrumental Music From Hungary 50s, 60s, 70s
pcl2
""Tanczene" means "Dance Music" in Hungarian and this is how Hungarians referred to all kinds of pop music right until the advent of rock. It's also the title of this compilation of long out-of-print instrumental tracks from Hungary, most from the late 50's-mid 60's period. All tracks are transferred from old vinyl, so expect a lot of hisses and cracks. Also, expect a unique perspective on life and entertainment in a Warsaw Pact country, where anything associated with that side of the Berlin Wall was perceived as exotic."
And it's a very nice collection! Groovy and danceable. Just as good as any comp. from this "side" of the "border" covering the same time! (via Exotica)
My faves so far after one "spin": Imre Zsoldos: Delibabos Hortobagyon (Crazy!), Harmonia Vocal: Selejtezo szam (Fun "Soul Bossa Nova" look-a-like), Lajos Martiny: Marvellous Mambo (Mambo!), Club Ensemble + Studio Vocal: Presszo Csa Csa (Esquivelian!)

Soon: Kiddie Records Weekly

I have a feeling that Ford at Basic Hip Digital Oddio is a very cool kid. Just a while ago he launched the Corgi Toys site - and now this: "In 2005, Basic Hip Digital Oddio will feature an entire year of albums from the golden age of kiddie records, transferred from the original 78s and encoded to 192kbps MP3 format. One a week for 52 weeks! ... We believe people from around the world and of all ages will be delighted to hear these records. Not many folks these days play 78s or share this type of recording online. Chances are you've never heard them and if you have, it's been a long, long time. They are nostalgic, entertaining and just plain fun. The colorful covers are beautiful works of art"
Have a peak here. Looks fun huh?! Something to look forward to!

Two Sides of the Trilogy

pcl2
Magnus is extatic: "Strange! Hypnotic! Eerie sounds from an obscure lounge trio, recording this LP for the "Strange Productions" label... Wow... I first heard tracks from this LP on a Subliminal lounge CD made by my friend Stefan at Subliminal Sounds in Stockholm, my inspiration when it comes to this kind of psychedelic lounge gem's.
I managed to win a copy on eBay and heard more tracks, some more suited to the ME-in-me at the time, My God, I consider this LP a masterpiece, and if you meet me in year 6017, and ask about it, I hope I still treasure it like I do now."

I'm listening to it while writing this.. and I'm beginning to build up a pretty serious extatic mood here myself too! IT IS WAY OUT COOL! Thanks Magnus!

1 year - 52 weeks - tons of music

Jan Turkenburg's 52 weeks project is now on 50. And 50 means Koffie Konserten - Coffee Concerts (In wich Jan, himself, is one of the recorded performing artists!).
So it's week 50. Not much left of this huge music-sharing project! I think it's high time to meet the man behind all of this. So, here's a short interview:

Z - Why are you doing this?

Jan - I've been asking myself that same question the last two months :-), but I just started it for fun, because I liked the 365 days project of Otis Fodder to have some kind of follow up. Also I wanted to get the dutch unusual and amature music some attention

Z - What kind of music are you into privately?

Jan - There's really no particular genre that I like best. I must say I listen to the music I download from netlabels most, music of "real people"

Z - Do you have any favorite week/release in this project so far?

Jan - I don't have one particular favorite, but I prefer the ones like Toos Ligtenberg, Purple Brain, Quirass, weirdomusic and of course The water wind and sail-project of which I'm really proud. Well maybe that last one is my favourite, yes...

Z - Do you ever dream about becoming a huge rock star?

Jan - No way! If I ever do it'll be in a nightmare. I enjoy the attention I'm getting in local newspapers now and on the internet, but apart from that I like my nice and quiet private life.

Z - Will there be other projects after this? I mean - this year must have been busy for you.

Jan - It sure was (sometimes a bit too) busy for me. I'm not certain what to do next,
Splogman's world will continue and there will be downloads from time to time. I want to have more time to compose. What I've been thinking of is a way to get more people make their own music and send it in. A new project would be in that direction. It's nice we have another netlabel, I mean WMrecordings that can get those works published.

There won't be a project that takes a year anymore. It has been nice, I made some great new friends and I'm glad we've made it this far, but a year is just a bit too long...

The History of Airstream

Now! To get a little more depth into the travel trailer history let's get to know the history of Airstream:
"Wallace Merle Byam, Airstream’s founder, was practically born a traveler. As a young child he traveled extensively with his grandfather, who led a mule train in Baker, Oregon. Later, as an adolescent, he was a shepherd, living in a two-wheeled donkey cart outfitted with a kerosene cookstove, a sleeping bag, and wash pail. These early experiences undoubtedly contributed to the direction his life would eventually take. As a young man, Wally signed on with the merchant marines, graduated Stanford University’s Law School in 1923, owned an advertising agency, and became a magazine publisher. A do-it-yourself magazine he published featured an article describing how to build a travel trailer. When readers began complaining about the plans, Wally tried them out for himself. Indeed, the plans turned out to be flawed.
Wally’s innovative spirit drove him to build his own model. While he considered it primitive, his design forever changed the history of travel trailers. By dropping the floor down between the wheels and raising the ceiling height, the revolutionary design made it possible for campers to stand up straight when inside the trailer. Wally wrote an article describing how to build his trailer for under $100 — this time drawing an enthusiastic response from his readers.
During the late 1920’s, Americans were beginning to take to the roads in greater and greater numbers. Wally’s new trailer was a perfect match for the new mobile lifestyle. Wally began making a living selling sets of plans for five dollars each, complete trailer kits, and finished trailers he built in his Los Angeles backyard. The fledgling business survived the crash of 1929, and by 1930 he had abandoned law, advertising, and publishing to become a full-time builder of travel trailers."

And now even more goodies: Famous Movies Featuring Airstream Trailers (Titles like: 'Charlie's Angels', 'Space Cowboys', 'Raising Arizona' and 'Independence Day'.)

Camper Tramps

pcl2
"Don't listen to her, I'm the one you really want to buy this trailer from. Why just look at the way my fingernails glide over these twin firm smooth propane tanks. They're just full of pressure and ready to explode, if they get too hot to handle, if you know what I mean!"

Robert Berry, the genious behind retroCRUSH, presents a couple of scans from old travel trailer brochures in his own imaginative way.

Combo Organ Heaven

'Tommy T's Federal Reserve' on stage with a Kustom, 1968

"Remember the cheesy combo organs of the late 60's and early 70's? Bands like the Doors, Iron Butterfly, the Animals, the Dave Clark 5, with their small electronic organs and their thin, reedy sounds had a major impact on the music scene. These strange instruments, with their chrome legs, plastic parts, and gaudy colors have fallen out of favor with most "serious" musicians. With the exception of some alternative and retro bands, you just don't see them much any more."

Jack Hylton: 1892-1965

Said about Jack Hylton: "He looked like such an insignificant man, with no special attributes, but beneath his beguiling simplicity was a forceful character and a formidable brain with prolific ideas which paved the way for dance bands in Britain. He was in every sense an original with the human touch."

"He was very short tempered…but he was strangely patient, he was outstandingly generous, he had a wild sense of humour, he was quick to rise to temper and quick to fall away. If there was ridiculousness in his argument, he would see it. He basically wanted to enjoy himself, I think. I’ve never seen anybody who wanted to enjoy themselves as much and I’ve certainly never seen anybody who succeeded to quite such a degree."

Learn more about the Scopitone in this great article by Jack Stephenson.

Update: By some strange and odd forces the last entry called "New Blog Entry Fight" disappeared. I have NO IDEA WHY!? But I know that Spike for Scopitones.com was the winner and that Jack Bravery and Michael Leigh also left comments (the HaloScan posts are still there!).
If anyone know why this happened and what I've done wrong - please tell me!

Update II: Spike who won the "Entry Contest" is Spike Priggen. Listen to his latest CD, "The Very Thing That You Treasure" here - it's really nice (reminds me a bit of Chris Bell/Alex Chilton with a streak of country/folk)!

Multi-Headed Freaks of Nature

"Ladies and Gentleman, we solemnly present to you nine individuals to whom fate decided to deal a loosing hand. Driven from their birthplaces, shunned by society, denied even a modicum of decency, these poor creatures were doomed to live a life of misery. Rescued from streets and alleys, the Residents below are now in our care and are beginning to find a home and purpose here at the Orphanage."

[Click HERE to see the wholesome artwork 'Hawaii 3-0' from 1988]

These artworks by Boris Vallejo could go really well with the "Wakka Chikka Wakka Chikka" in the latest post I think. And wow! He was the master who created Ozzy's nifty cover 'The Ultimate Sin'.
Check out this awesome gallery [But beware! It's a rather slow site with tons of images to load...] of works 1967-2000. (via Boing Boing)

God Damned Satan!

pcl2
With a little push from 20 Jazz Funk Greats I've had the pleasure to get to know Stryken (you know the christian metalheads who told us to Crush the head of Satan! [mp3]) the last hour or so. Quite pleasant I'd say. They are soo cute and soo with a mission...

pcl2

But what happend to them? (not that I knew about these knights of the holy water before, but...) Ok. Here's the latest news. "Joey Knight got married and Dale was at the wedding..More to come"
More? Is there more to this? I'm speachless...

But for those of you dying to check out their music - know that their albums are avaiable at all fine record stores. Or just check out these mp3s.
