So Long, Uncle Forry
Sad news, Horror and Science Fiction's number one fan, Forrest J. Ackerman, died last night at the age of 92. His tireless energy and enthusiasm for all things Psychotronic will be sorely missed. The Ackermonster, as he was fond of being called, was probably best known as the editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland, a magazine that made a big impression on many a squishy young brain back in the day (including mine). The cover illustrations were particularly noteworthy. You can view them all here.
Rot In Peace. Mr. Ackerman.

Chuckman Has Massaged My Brain

Jesus, my eyes! I always put a unique image on the covers of the proposals I write. They act as mnemonic devices as well a differentiators of content, and my clients being of a more free thinking bent, seem to appreciate that I took the time to find something that correlates my awareness of their existence. I was looking for an image of Mount Palomar Observatory when I found Chuckman's blog, where he has loads of stuff, but I was drawn into it via these awesome space cards. If you could fMRI me right now, my primary visual cortex would be firing like, like, I dunno, like the roiling plasma covered surface of the Sun.

Mystery of Peru

In January of 1952, Yma Sumac was the cover girl for the tiny news weekly “Quick” magazine. The complete tale of the “Mystery from Peru” can be found here.

Hindi Films

I have no idea if you have never seen this lovely collection of Hindi movie posters or seen them 100 times....I discovered them at Papy-Potage, which is an awfully good place to visit.

Paging Dr. Octagon.

"If rap has ever produced a Syd Barrett it has probably been Kool Keith. Or maybe he is more of a Roky Erickson. Kool Keith was one of the founding members of the old school hip-hop combo The Ultramagnetic MCs. After the MCs imploded Keith kinda snapped and ended up in Bellevue City Mental Hospital where he suffered from what sounds like some sort of delusional schizophrenia. After release from the mental hospital, Keith changed his name to Dr Octagon and released this insane platter on the world."
Joe over at The Last Days of Man on Earth takes a short break from his usual fine punk blogging to share a few tracks from the first Dr. Octagon album. "Dr. Octagonecologyst" is a small masterpiece of funky absurdist scatology. An instrumental version of the album, called "Instrumentalyst," is also available. (In 2006, Kool Keith and crew released a second album, "The Return of Dr. Octagon," that wasn't nearly as great.)

Jim Herrington

Photo of Cheeta, former star of Tarzan movies, and now the oldest chimp in the world.
NSFW shower pic of Kitten Natividad.
Scarcer than hen's teeth photo of reclusive R & B guitarist Mickey Baker (also of Mickey and Sylvia fame).
Jim Herrington's photoblog is PCL worthy, indeed.

Here's What I did on Thanksgiving
....at the insistence of my progeny. Brad Neely's Wizard people. We did it the way he described starting the audio and the DVD at the same time n' all. Most enjoyable.

Shop Till Ya Drop
The hideous, modern day phenomena called Black Friday is upon us here in the USA. Thousands of bargain starved miscreants roam our malls in search of the elusive $250 laptop, the $400 flat screen TV or the loathsome "Guitar Hero" video game set.
Are the masses in Sweden behaving this way today?
As I contemplate the idiocy of getting in line at your local Wally World at 4AM, my mind goes back to a gentler time when discount department stores like Korvette's roamed the earth.
Discount Stores of the 60's offers us a glimpse into a bygone era where one could always find the latest Herman's Hermits record for $3.99.
Memories......
