"Myra Breckinridge" (opening credits)
I started watching the Raquel Welch movie, "Myra Breckinridge" last night. Hoo man... it's awful. I'm gonna try to finish it tonight... but I'm not too sure I'll make it.
It's touted as "The book they said couldn't be written is now the movie they said couldn't be made!"
They were right!

Doin' the bird!
The Trashmen - Surfin' Bird (1963).
In fact there is only the singer/drummer Steve Wahrer and his rumbling vocals doing that crazy bird dance!
It is followed by a short interview of the young Steve...

77 Sunset Strip (snap snap)
Sorry, there's no "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb" on this compilation, but there IS the theme song from the 1960s TV hit series (and its companion cha-cha dance version), as well as a great hipster spy number entitled "Caper at the Coffee House"--all the other baristas will be SO impressed when you play this CD on the job, I practically guarantee it.
You can find the three song sampler from the album here.
Do the Philly Hucklebuck
If you're a fan of Louis Jordan, Bullmoose Jackson, and the Treniers, then grab a taste of what BeBop Wino is passing around--late 1940s sides by Philadelphia R & B bandleader/singer Jimmy Preston.

French Postcards (not that kind)
Damn, you all are getting SO well trained! I am getting great links left & right today. This very excellent collection of kitsch-infested French postcards comes via my Stumble-pal Hapax and I had to share it in case you haven't seen it yet.
Voici Etienne et son nouveau tourne-disque (la bas)! Je parle le francais comme une Francoisienne, n'est-ce pas?
And please, don't try to tell me that the pets on the postcard below are "well trained".

Brigitte Bardot - "Contact" (1967) music by Serge Gainsbourg.
They felt in love immediatly after the studio recording session in october 1966. Brigitte was at that time married to the millionaire Gunther Sachs. At the end of 1967, the couple recorded the song "Je t'aime, moi non plus" that was consider outrageous by the press. Her husband warns her after the scandal, she asked Serge to stop the released of the song, it ends violently their story. Their passion had been as intense as short.

Nurse Romance Cover of the Week
Surf Safari Nurse (1966, by Jane Converse. From the archives of Nurse Romance Cover of the Week at UWM Libraries’ Special Collections. "...Nurse Romance Cover of the Week presents images and snippets of text from the more than 425 novels held in the UWM Libraries' Special Collections that have nurses as central characters. These images, from works written for both young and adult audiences from the 1950s to the 1970s, often reflect stereotypes about nurses, usually negative, that are held in the popular imagination. These works raise issues concerning the image of nurses and the nursing profession in popular culture, and the books that serve to reinforce not only popular misconceptions of nurses, but of women generally, and professional women in particular."

Easy to Apply With Water
I am far less impressed by the actual outtakes from Martin & Lewis promos for their movie "The Caddy" than I am by this exceptional decal. (don't bother downloading unless you think you'd get a kick out of hearing Dean & Jerry say bad words)
from Dartman's World of Wonder
Calypso Carnival
Now available--1950s calypso tunes from the Duke of Iron, including the Naughty Fly, Woman Police, Loving Woman is a Waste of Time, and the Big Bamboo (the definitive version, for those keeping score).
KAAAAAAAA-RATE!!!!
For those of you who did not live through the era, the 1970s was a decade fraught with danger. Hormone levels were so high that we were all compelled to learn karate to protect ourselves from one another. Cheap aftershave would set off the women, even for terminal nerds like Joey Bishop & Regis Philbin. aggressive waiters were a constant problem for women.
All the lame crap above is just an excuse to post this great song sent to me recently--"Karate" by Ray Sanders & Friend. (I like to think "Friend" is the blonde from the movie "Faster Pussycat Kill Kill")

Learning to bellydance or similar dances that requires a flexible and well-oiled body is much harder than it may look. It takes years of practice. And a lot of bruises.

We kill people on stage. Real people. People we don't like. We don't eat them. We just kill.
We used to have alot of groupies. They are all gone now. The audience seem to diminish for every year too.
We rock. We are artists. We have something important to say. If you don't listen - FUCK YOU.
