Brillo Tells Your Fortune

Of all the household products we could trust to help us divine our fate, I think we would all have to agree that the first choice would surely be BRILLO. This Depression-era booklet spells out how a simple deck of cards can predict your future, which surely includes lots of time spent admiring your image in pots glowing with that high-gloss BRILLO shine.

In the half-awake state that I found this article, I read the line in the ad below as "no biting alkies" and immediately had this image of 1930s era women forced to hire cranky alcoholic hoboes to do the heavy scrubbing of their pots -- before Brillo came along to save the day. I believe I'll go make more coffee now.

The Manley Aristocrat

Ignore the video's technical issues and enjoy the images of a classic 1940s vintage popcorn machine that was used for many years in a small town movie theater by the legendary (locally, at least) "Popcorn Lady". The Artcraft Theatre still shows vintage movies (on 35mm by a real projectionist), so if you ever find yourself driving between Louisville and Indianapolis some weekend, get off the highway at exit 90 and enjoy the show.

More info about the Manley Aristocrat popcorn machine-- and vintage manuals, popcorn boxes, and other popcorn machine history-- can be found here.

The Kim Sisters

From wikipedia:
The Kim Sisters was a South Korean female trio who made their career in U.S. during 1950s and 60s. They were Sue (Sook-ja), Aija (Ai-ja) and their cousin Mia Kim. Sue and Aija were two of seven children of Kim Hae-song, a classical music conductor, and Lee Nan-young, one of Korea's most famous singers before the Korean War, perhaps best known for "the Tears of Mokpo." Mia's father was Lee Bong-ryong, a musician as well.

The sisters arrived in Las Vegas in 1959 and first performed at the Thunderbird Hotel, where producer Tom Ball did a show with Asian artists. Their successful performances at the Thunderbird led them to the Stardust where Ed Sullivan saw the trio and invited the sisters to perform on his show. The sisters performed on the Ed Sullivan show more than 22 times.

"the hunt" by Juan & Junior

From Spanish wikipedia:

Juan Ignacio Pardo Suarez (1942, Palma de Mallorca) and Antonio Morales Barreto "Junior" (1943, Philippines).

They started their career in Los Pekenikes and Brincos in the 60's. In February 1967 they formed the duo John and Junior. Their discography is short (only 6 singles) but full of successes.

In 1968 be responsible for composing the entire soundtrack and songs from the movie A dos niñas, directed by Luis Lucia Mingarro and starring Marisol and Palomo Linares.

One day John, in the absence of Junior tried to correct a recording of John's voice with his own. This was the end of the duo. They continued as solo artists.

The Dovells / Mope-Itty Mope Stomp (1962)

From Wiki: The Dovells were an American music group, formed at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1957, under the name 'The Brooktones'. The members were Arnie Silver, Mark Gordesky, Len Borisoff (better known as Len Barry), Jerry Gross, Mike Freda and Jim Mealey (alias Danny Brooks). Their first single was "No, No, No", which was a minor local hit for The Brooktones, who soon broke up. Summers and Dennis left the group, forming The Gems with Mark Stevens and Alan Horowitz in 1960. The remaining Brooktones signed to the Parkway record label and added Jerry Serlen and William Shunkwiler to the group, while changing the band's name to The Dovells.

Their first hit was "Bristol Stomp", a dance song with the lead vocal actually sung by Matthew Cavallaro,[dubious – discuss] a short time member forced to leave the band due to military obligations. This was followed by the similar hit "Do the New Continental" (featured in the John Waters movie Hairspray for a minute). "Bristol Stomp" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. They appeared performing both songs in the Chubby Checker movie Don't Knock The Twist in 1961. They released a series of singles over the next few years. These included "You Can't Sit Down", a #3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. Len Borisoff left in 1965 for a solo career under the name Len Barry. The high point of his solo career was "1-2-3" in 1965.

The Dovells continued as a trio, and recorded as The Magistrates for MGM in 1968. As the Magistrates they recorded the chart hit "Here Comes the Judge," taking advantage of the popularity of the skit of the TV show Laugh-In.

Patrick Allenbach, Dorus, Kralingen etc...

Taken from splogman.com

At the moment I spent most of my spare time digitizing records, taking pictures of sleeves and ... what's the english word ... retoucher ... restoring, yes! I'm not sure what the use is apart from me having a lot of home-ripped digital music and being able to throw or give away most of it. I have a lot of second hand penny-worth albums waiting to be processed, not to mention five shoe boxes of weird singles, flexi discs etc... Readers Digest has produced a lot of flexi discs, promoting their collections of "best of" boxes. In the Netherlands it was mostly Willem Duys who recently passed away who presented them (I have to listen and digitize a lot of those yet...) and appearently for the French speaking community it was Patrick Allenbach.

I've noticed that playing flexidiscs wet [demineralized water of course) enhances the sound quality enormously. So that's standard procedure.

And last but not least for today: Dorus [Tom Manders] song 'popfestival' (and hashish, I feel it's important to mention that to enhance it's appeal to you)

The song describes the Kralingen Popfestival, in Rotterdam 1970, inspired by the one in Woodstock.
