It's Hawaiian, It's Dutch, It's Ventriloquism?
I have absolutely no idea what is going on with this album, which is why I listen to a lot of music in languages I don't understand, I really enjoy being befuddled. It stimulates the imagination. Splogman, can you explain?

well, as a matter of fact, it's a record with songs from the West-Indies I believe they called 'em, a colony of the Dutch in the Far East (a Dutchman can tell you probably everything about it), it's got nothing to do with Hawai (sorry), I think they just wanted to add a little exotic touch ...
grtz
Patrick (from Belgium, and yes, we once had a colony - Zaire - but our king Leopold II was much more efficient, he had the natives' hands chopped off if they didn't want to work for him, so that's why there's no Belgian records off Congolese music and musicians on the sleeve)
But what's the deal with the high pitched voices? Like what ventriloquists do? Inquiring minds need to know!
Its a classic Indonesian-Dutch music colaboration I guess..
Tempoe Doloe is classic Indonesian language (now is 'Tempo Dulu').
It means: The Past Time
Looking at his resume this had to go to the Netherlnds after the Indonesian independence came at last. Before his carreer in the colonial army/police he went busking in his youth.
Here he sings the songs of his childhood. Having an untrained voice while trying to be a kid again may result in this weird stuff.
and...
Patrick: at least the Congo inspired one of my favorite Ska tunes: http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=h6QyYEU-a28
To give some credit to the Non-Tempoe Doeloe (TD gives me itches, it's often colonials blaring about the good times) repatriates: the Tielman brothers rule: http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=YvC2_nsVJv0
it's Indonesian.
