Week 15: The saviours from Sweden

These days there seems to be a genre for every other odd record ever made. Here at the office we found a real goodie. Suck on this lollipop: Swedish, Christian, instrumental surfrock. It´s not exactly a big genre, so far we only turned up one track. Recorded in 1966 by Eko-teamet, for their EP on Cantino, surrounded by three really lame Salvation Army type songs, which you are graciously spared. But we´re searching for more in this newly found genre. There might just be another one out there.

While we were digging in the old country we found a dusty tape of something really special, mainly for the Swedes. Although some of you weirdos out there in Never Neverland might enjoy the highpitched screams. It´s Swedish popstar Carola Häggkvist recorded live, in religious ecstasy, at a meeting with the sect Livets Ord (Word of Life) sometime in the mid 1980s. This was actually played on Swedish national radio back then, presented by radiohost Ulf Elving: and that´s just what you´re about to hear now. Good-old fashioned shouting for the need of discipline, obedience and some nearly-throwing-up moments of ecstasy. Or is that a demon trying to escape?

Week 14: Falling from grace with god, and a dummy

Since the HTMPL Team is very busy this weekend (oh, my! what beast have we created! we have 666 letters to read and reply to concerning our last post...) this post will come to you a little early this time.

It´s not that easy to fall from grace. Especially if you like to wallow in self-pity. If you did and if you do you might as well turn it into an artform for public consumption, like Tammy Faye Bakker who constantly seems to apply it, like her thick mascara under those ever running tears. But she did do some fun records back in the good old days with Jim. But Jim he fell so hard that he had to go to prison for a few years, even sharing a cell with Lyndon LaRouche. Imagine those two together in a cell – the mind boggles. Tammy jumped ship and shagged up with Jims mate Roe Messner. And on it goes.

There´s something about Tammys singing that keeps reminding us of our favourite ventriloquist dummy: Little Marcy. How can that be? Now, Jim fell for the money and Jerry Lees cousin Jimmy Swaggart fell for sex. There´s just too many temptations out there for god-fearing evangelists. If it´s not money or sex there´s always the bottle to turn to in between sermons. To gear you up before hitting the pulpit and telling them lazy sinners out there a true word or two.

It seems that some of you are not able to view this blog properly.
I'm very sorry about this. I've been trying to solve this problem for the last two weeks unsuccessfully.
The problems started with the change of template.

I will not go back and use the old template as it were (because I hate it and it was ugly!!).
But I will try to build a new look on one of bloggers standard templates.
But I have no time and energy right now.
So, this will have to wait a few weeks or so.

Just to let you know.

Dear Readers!

The foundation for this blog is my love of sharing (and the love of finding).
I think I'm doing a decent job. But I do not know for sure.
A good way telling me I'm doing a good or bad job is to leave a comment once or while.
This site has never before had such an high level of page load activity. The Average Visit Length is for the first time over 3 minutes (based on approximatly 700 vistits a day).
But I get less and less comments. I get more mails regarding PCL than comments these days.
Isn't that strange?

It's not that I need you to comment every goddamn post. But if you like this blog and want it here a little feedback here and there wouldn't hurt.

I'd probably do this anyway.

But I get more inspired by feedback.
So, feedback: better blog.

"In 1940, to halt the flow of Canadian currency to the United States, the Canadian government banned the importation of certain classes of magazines from the U.S. (See trade press coverage, reproduced below.) In the wake of these moves, Toronto-based publishers moved in to replace imported titles with magazines of their own. The Norman Book Company, Classic Publishing Company and, most notably, Superior Publishers, published dozens of humour, romance, adventure and true crime magazines from the early 1940s through the mid 1950s.

This site includes the covers of several dozen Canadian true crime magazines from the 1940s and 1950s. These magazines are part of one history of Canadian cultural production, of those moments in which Canadian producers have moved to fill the gaps created by legislation or trade restrictions. Their covers form part of a history of urban visuality. In the design of these covers, text has become graphic, and graphic forms have been designed to quickly communicate mood or sensation. As these covers change, over a 10-year period, we see the posed theatrics of the pulp magazine give way to portraits, typically of solitary women. Then, in the early 1950s, headlines, datelines and other conventions of tabloid publishing will become more prominent, as the visual languages of the exposé newspaper and magazine displace those inherited from the pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s. "
