Judge A Book

...By It's Cover:
pcl2
Jim Barker writes: "I love books. I love the smell of 'em, the feel of 'em, and I love the look of 'em. In fact, I even like to read them, but that's another story. The main preoccupation of this site is the covers of books. Mainly books I've picked up in charity shops, or at carboot sales or jumble sales, even some that I've found on the ground. Here you will find hard-boiled detectives, scantily-clad floozies, unlikely space-ships, grotesque aliens, bizarre religious images, beatnik shockers, hell's angels, skinheads, barbarian heroes, and horrifying monsters... among others."

Strangely Familiar

"Headquartered in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, Strangely Familiar Music Club is a tribe, a family, an army of dancers, musicians, djs, and artisans from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
Dedicated to shaking up the music and art scene across the globe, SFMC assembles impromptu gatherings, parties, and performances based on the fusion of styles, genres, cultures, and classes .. aimed at opening minds and enabling creative thought and expression.
SFMC is commited to expanding awareness of the arts by fusing the familiar with the unknown through dance, music, theatrics, and the visual arts."
And further on about the mash-ups: "Strangely Familiar Music Club regularly features artists of all types, focusing on music, particularly bootlegs, bastard pop, and mash-ups. With the proliferation of digital music software, an entire world of music production and interpretation has begun, spawning an army of "bedroom producers." and "desktop DJs" .. Thus begins the R/Evolution!
The basic premise of bastard pop, or a mash-up, is that you take two songs, ideally, two very different songs and combine them into one new and unique song. Of course, there are many variations on this theme, and today's mash-ups can be very complex."

Murder Inc.

pcl2
In Who's Who in Space Age Pop Music: "Irving Joseph spent most of his career in the anonymity of the orchestra pit, but space age pop fans know him for a choice piece of crime jazz titled, Murder, Inc. on Bob Shad's Time label. Murder, Inc. sounds a little like outtakes from the Tijuana strip-joint "source music" in Mancini's great score to Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil." In fact, there's enough of a rocking sax combo feel to Murder, Inc. that Shad reissued it a few years later as Surf Party--My Pad by "The Wedges" in an attempt to cash in on the surf music craze. (Time Records soon went under for the third time, however, to resurface as Mainstream)."

Communist Radio

Something I Learned Today: "This here is the A-side from The Eat's first single in 1979. Rarer than rare (what could possibly be more rare you ask?), this has been causing record collectors to drool, fight, and empty their bank accounts for years. I could never understand how some could pay so much for a record until I finally heard it on one of the Killed By Death comps - so raw and incendiary sounding that I had to play it over and over. Only 500 were pressed, so you can imagine the feeding frenzy that collector nerds endured to find a copy. ..."

All Round Show AB

Bellybongo tells us: "This is a very strange Swedish record from the late 1960s or early 1970s, it's a vanity pressing featuring available artists in manager Valter Edbergs Supermarket shows. I had noticed this oddity a few times browsing records at local thrift stores and fleamarkets, but for some reason not bought it, then after an alcohol drenched evening at Tiki Room of Stockholm, my pal Stefan played it for me, and I was floored! He played the B-side that has one of the weirdest tracks I have heard from Sweden, and it was made by a famous guy, Johnny Öst, part of the Öst family, wellknown Swedish artists."

The Mystery of Love

"In moments when my desire to know God was so intense that I would willingly have shed this mortal body had that been the path to union with the Divine... in those moments driven by desire I have found God in my music... sometimes in two simple chords on my harp or guitar have I heard angel voices in the exqusite overtones and harmonies suspended in the air yet vibrating within me. And they expressed in definite terms what God is... terms too definite for ambigious words. That is the nature of my music... that is the source of my poetry. It is all healing." -- Marr'Del, from the liner notes.

The Jazz Age In Kansas City 1920-1940

"After livestock, it was music that put Kansas City on the map. Carl Howard & Space Patrol

As you may have noticed this blog has a special feature devoted to Luxuriamusic.com in general - and to Carl Howard's SPACE PATROL in particular. Here's a short Introductory interview (by mail) with your one true SPACE PATROL host himself:

"Z - Hi Carl! Why are you doing this?

C - I produce SPACE PATROL episodes in order to prevent myself from having to think about having not been properly employed since god knows when. Except for The Lounge King and his confidante Special Agent 69, currently no other Luxuria host has had the free time to compile, research, and present an original, pre-recorded program at the rate of one a week, and I completely understand why. Even Chuck Kelley's "Heroes & Villains" program, which he spins live to DAT much as he used to spin it live at the original Luxuria, requires preparation, and now, post production. Both he and Paul Kennedy, the host of "Nightscape", tried at first to do a show a week, but quickly realized it was impossible, and cut back to one new show every month. It's a good thing that Luxuria has an active robot playlist currently exceeding 4,500 tunes - they're needed!

Z - What music in particular are you into? Any favorite artists?

C - For the Luxuria format I get in a diverse cross section of listening that is somewhere between a furious swath of destruction and a spurious swath of destruction, but there is music I enjoy which clearly doesn't fit. One can hear some of it in early episodes of SPACE PATROL when it wasn't exactly clear what outlet would wind up broadcasting them: there was more punk-period DEVO, John Foxx with Ultravox, Captain Beefheart, and horrific oddballisms by the likes of The New Creation and Wee Willie Shantz. These days I basically keep the PAIN content of the show to the closing track, where one will still hear misguided crooners like Wing (a very sweet lady, by the way), Anna-Lisa Ingemansson, Florence Foster Jenkins and so on. The PAIN segment, sometimes referred to as PAIN ALLEY, is a tribute to the novelty records show at the original Luxuria presented by the DJ Strike, who strangely enough hasn't been heard from since the end of Luxuria I in April 2001. You're also not going to hear space rock, free jazz, or analog-style electronic music on SPACE PATROL - they're not appropriate. But it doesn't mean that I'm not listening to them.

Z - What does eclectic mean to you?

C - Alterna-yuck doesn't mean anything to me. I've been through enough phases, absent perhaps extreme hardcore power noize, and perhaps what used to be called EBM in some parts of Europe, to have a sense of what I simply don't care about. I have no problem with a retro sensibility, for several reasons, not all of them necessarily rational. But one reason is, if something has been done before and it has obviously been done so right that younger generations now want to pay it tribute by sampling the life out of it, that means the original likely has an indisputable merit which deserves to be kept in view. So for example, I'll take a hefty slice of French library funk by Mat Camison or Eddie Warner - something which from the outset was intended to be sold as background music for a car chase sequence and later became breakbeat fodder - and play it from beginning to end solely on its own merits. That makes me, in a sense, not only an obscurist but atraditionalist. And a snob too.

Z - Who is Carl Howard?

C - None of your business!

Unconscionable fraudmeister, at yourXXXX at my service."

Only your One True SPACE PATROL is as relevant as you might think!

Origins of American Animation

"The development of early American animation is represented by this collection of 21 animated films and 2 fragments, which spans the years 1900 to 1921. The films include clay, puppet, and cut-out animation, as well as pen drawings. They point to a connection between newspaper comic strips and early animated films, as represented by Keeping Up With the Joneses, Krazy Kat, and The Katzenjammer Kids. As well as showing the development of animation, these films also reveal the social attitudes of early twentieth-century America." (via Coudal Partners)

Dalida

pcl2
"Dalida was an exceptional, extraordinary star who was even referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World and the modern incarnation of the wise Egyptian queen, Nefertiti. Not only was she a great singer having one of the most unique and compelling voices of the XX century and endowed with an astonishing dramatic talent, but she was also a wonderful, generous, amazingly-selfless, and touching person whose legend still exudes an air of mystery. Dalida was adored by General de Gaulle and Princess Diana, by President Sadat and Edith Piaf... She can be ranked among such celebrated stars as: Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, Grace Kelly, Maria Callas and many others."

The Man I Love

"Today's track is by one of my favorite blues singers, Sippie Wallace. The career of Wallace is heavily tied to her piano player Hersal Thomas. Thomas was one of the best upcoming talents and his work with Wallace reminds me a lot of Lonnie Johnson's piano work with the great blues singers of the period. Unfortunately, Thomas died of food poisoning at an early age, and Wallace fell out of the music scene within the year. She made a few recordings in 1945 and then a handful more during the revival, but nothing would match her work with Thomas. The Man I Love, is one of the best blues songs, and easily the highlight of Thomas and Wallace's collaboration."

Atomic Rocketships of the Space Patrol

"Your imagination has been captured by the roaring rockets from Heinlein's SPACE CADET or the Polaris from TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET. But are such rockets possible? How does one go about defining the performance of these atomic-powered cruisers?
This document gives some hints and equations that will allow back-of-the-envelope calculations on such matters. Though horribly simplistic, they are far better than just making up your figures.
This site was mainly intended for science fiction authors who wanted a little scientific accuracy. But anybody who is interested can play with the toys contained within, designing their own Planet Rangers Rocketships. It is assumed that the reader has enough knowledge to know the difference between a star and a planet, and enough skill to use a pocket calculator. Computer spreadsheet and computer programming skills are a plus, spreadsheets in particular will make your life much easier."

A little web research tells me that the Cats had a huge hit in Japan during 1959/60 entitled 'Kiiroi Sakuranbo' ('Yellow Cherry' in english) This was also banned from radio airplay for a time due to its suggestive content, and later covered in 1970 by a mixed race all-girl band known as The Golden Half (who appear onstage singing it in the film 'Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter') I also found several translations online for the lyrics, so I've combined and paraphrased the first verse here for everyone's enjoyment:

"Attractive young girls (sigh)
Even sexy, perhaps (sigh)
Maybe they're aroused (sigh)
Maybe they aren't (sigh)
That's the charm of the "Yellow Cherries"
You may squeeze them (one)
you may suck them (two)
Sweet, yet bitter (three)
One, two, three (long sigh)
Yellow cherries"

I've included 4 bonus tracks taken from a coverless Japanese EP which I found in a Goodwill store. I recognized 'Tokyo Shoeshine Boy' which appears in MASH, but other than that I can't learn much about the first two selections. However Joyce Parkhurst tells me that Yoshiko Yamaguchi was a chinese born performer who found stardom in Japan. (Thanks again to Mrs Parkhurst for translating and providing the names of these performers)"
