Space Age Pop?
"This music might be characterized most easily by what it isn't. It's rarely simple enough in structure and instrumentation to be called rock (and certainly retains enough of a sense of humor to be disqualified as art rock). It's not serious or straightforward enough to be called jazz. It's often too esoteric or extreme to be called pop. It's in some middle ground between all of these, which means it's populated with the outcasts from other well-established genres. As a result, Space Age Pop is full of brilliant, bizarre, and exciting sounds, which are particularly striking to ears accustomed to the stereotypes that populate the more familiar genres.
Among these outcasts, though, there are some common features that a simple categorization can help identify. The following list offers some labels for these categories and matches some names against each. I should state up front, though, that my definition of "Space Age Pop" can be summed up as: all of this and more. ..." (Quoted from What IS Space Age Pop? )

A pre-rhetorical question?
Worries in 1949. (Mechanix Illustrated 2-1949)
"DINOSAURS may roam the unexplored jungles of Africa!
Native tribes near the Congo River call the creatures Mokele Mbembe. They say they’re enormous and live in caves washed out by the river at sharp turns. Some startled tribesmen have described them as having long necks, small heads and one long tusk. Others have told of a three-horned monster like that shown above, with ferocious teeth and a massive comb. All agree that the creatures kill both humans and elephants. But they never eat the flesh. Farther east in Africa, near Lake Ban-gweolo, the natives tell of a weird animal which they call Chipekwe. Because it kills hippopotamuses, not one hippo can be found in the lake. One tribe claims it hunted and killed a Chipekwe forty years ago. The strongest hunters had to jab it with their spears for days before the animal finally succumbed. ...
...Reliable sources have been hinting to us for generations that there are creatures existing which we have never seen. Will they be dreadful throwbacks to another age or inconceivable monsters of the future?"
Believe me. They are right here among us. We just don't recognize them as "monsters" per se. But I assure you, they are prehistoric, they are dreadful throwbacks and they are up to no good. 2006.

Lost jazz-prog treasures
Åke Eriksson, of Wasa Express (as well as numerous of other bands and constellations...) shares some rare jazz-prog treasures with a big Swedish touch.
'Pop Workshop - Song of the Pterodactyl' (fantastic cover art work by Hans Arnold)
Åke tells us: "Don´t let the title fool you, this has nothing to do with pop. In 1974 Tony Williams was invited to a session in Stockholm and this is the result. They really wanted Billy Cobham since he was the number one skin basher of the day. But since he couldn´t, or wouldn´t ,make it They "had to do" with Tony.
An international all star band was put together with Janne Schaffer, Wlodek Gulgowski, Mads Vinding and Zbigniew Namyslovski.
At the airport after the session Mr. Gulgowski asked for an autograph. "For the kids". Tony Signed a piece of papper, folded it and waved goodbye. When Mr. Gulgowski took a look it said : Billy Cobham !"
And lots of other treasures to be find (one such being Lasse Färnlöfs jazz score for the cult movie "The Chameleon" (Kameleonterna, directed by Torbjörn Axelman).
Lost jazz-prog treasures that probably never will see a re-issue

Lava lamps and naturism
"Edward Craven Walker (1918 - August 15, 2000) Born in Singapore he was the inventor of the psychedelic Lava Lamp. Walker said of its mesmerizing motions, "If you buy my lamp, you won't need drugs... I think it will always be popular. It's like the cycle of life. It grows, breaks up, falls down and then starts all over again." ...
Under the pseudonym Michael Keatering, Walker directed the landmark naturist film Travelling Light (also known as Traveling Light (1959). This was the first naturist film to receive public release in the UK. Described as an underwater ballet, this film was shot off Corsica and was released in 1960. He later produced Sunswept (1961) and Eves on Skis (1963). .." (quote from Wikipedia entry)

Updated: They stated there were no fun in Detroit back in '69. At the homecoming show in 2003 I don't see the validity of that statement to be true anymore.

The Queen Is In the Closet
"It's Friday night, 1965. The men are all congregating in the back room den. Stogies are sniffed and then smoked. The best scotch is poured. A new deck of cards is opened for the weekly poker match. And later, after everyone is just a little bit sauced, the 16mm projector may come out of the closet and show that scandalous film loop of the women in high-heel boots spanking each other. But every evening still needs something to start the party rolling - and that's where the stag party record comes in. These recklessly lewd and wonderfully droll albums featured songs by bawdy, buxom beauties , and were a mainstay in the secret private world of men, much to the chagrin of the US Postal Service. ...
... But what of those men of a more "gay" disposition? You know, those still trapped in the closet of a pre-Stonewall era. ...
... Camp Records was not making fun of gay culture, their goal was merely to get those gay stag parties kick-started! ...",
Clinton McClung presents Camp Records and a great stash of
mp3s From 'The Queen Is In the Closet' and some Camp records singles, everything made available at WFMU's Beware of the Blog.
