Week 20, Night on the Bare Mountain

The seminal classic satanic piece of music could arguably be said to be Modest Mussorgsky´s 'Night on the Bare Mountain'. This Russian composers life was no picknick. Living a highly erratic and miserable life filled with alcoholism and deep depressions he found composing loathsome and tedious, resulting in a lot of unfinished works. In a sudden ray of sunshine in 1867 he envisioned a Sabbath upon a mountain, where the devil was called upon by the witches, who surround and glorify him on his throne ´til he gives to signal for the Sabbath to begin. A piece which was later used by Hollywoods dark prince Walt Disney in the satanic sequence in Fantasia. Suffering from narcotic epilepsy Modest fell into depression in late february 1881, he was hospitalised, dying a month later haunted by a life of despair.

So, where to end this two month descent into Christianity and Satanism but with a few words of wisdom from Mr. Crowley: There is No god but Man. Every Man and every Woman is a morning star.

The Newark and Detroit "Riots" of 1967

"The summer of 1967 marked the apex of a cycle of 'urban unrest' that began during the mid-1960s in Harlem and Watts and tapered off by the early 1970s. During the "summer of love" one hundred and sixty four "civil disorders" were reported in one hundred and twenty eight American cities. Of these "disturbances" that took place in the summer of '67, Newark and Detroit were arguably the most severe. Beginning on July 14th and lasting through July 17th, violence in Newark claimed 23 lives and destroyed over 10 million dollars of property. A mere six days later, on July 23rd, Detroit experienced a similar fate, resulting in the deaths of 43 people and the destruction of an estimated 22 million dollars of property damage over a five day period. Both "riots" were sparked by police activity in predominantly black neighborhoods, but the underlying causes were quite complex, including police brutality, persistent poverty, and a lack of political representation for African American residents, as well as local opposition to the Vietnam War. The language used to describe these events thus varies widely depending on one's political perspective. While some saw these occurrences as "rebellions" or "uprisings" against economic and political oppression other portrayed these events as episodic or criminal in nature, employing the terms "civil disorder", "urban unrest" or "riots" to refer to seemingly senseless acts of violence. In this site, eyewitnesses will speak for themselves as residents, merchants, militants, police officers and National Guardsmen describe their experiences during the summer of 1967. "

Updated: Zettel invites us to read Thomas Pynchon's piece 'A Journey Into The Mind of Watts' (from The New York Times Magazine, June 12, 1966) about the 'urban unrest' in Watts and the circumstances (socially and racially) leading towards the "riots".

Updated II: Bat Guano says: "An ex-radical (maybe he still is) living around my parts, Pun Plamondon, wrote a book on his life with a great inside look at the Detroit riots. He was there with John Sinclair, White Panthers, MC5, etc. Detroit was poised to become the Midwest US's hippie heart, but the riots radicalized and drove out these groovy people.

Week 19: Spade Cooley

Spade Cooley was no stranger to sin. Getting the nickname Spade after a poker game, this great fiddler went on to not only help bring into being but actually coining the term Western Swing in the early 1940´s. As the years and the roads went on his sound waned in the ears of the public. All coming to a brutal end. He tried to get back by putting together an all-girl hillbilly band, but the public didn´t bite and the show was cancelled. On april 3rd, 1961, he made a housecall to his estranged wife Ella Mae. As the moon rose over the desert ranch in Mojave a drunken Spade went into the bottomless pit; kicking, beating and eventually strangling his wife, forcing his 14-year old daughter Melody to look on. Only a few days later, with Spade pleading for his life, Capitol cynically rush-released the song Cold Gray Bars trying to cash in on it all. As the trial went on Spade tried to blame his fit of rage on an anonymous sex cult Ella Mae was supposedly involved with. Spinning his tale on the stand he soon descended into a very graphic tale of sodomy. None, which did him any favours with the jury and the judge. Finding him guilty of first degree murder Spades lucky cards definitely ran out, and he was sentenced to life in prison. A few years later, in 1969, he was allowed to perform for a sheriffs benefit concert, when returning to his dressing room the Devil finally came to claim his dues and Spade fell to the floor in a final heart attack.

""Little Shop of Horrors" is one of the most famous B-movie cult classics in film history.
Corman and writer Charles B. Griffith purportedly wrote the script over the course of a single evening, writing in all-night Hollywood coffee shops.
The film was cast with stock actors that Corman had used in previous films.
They rehearsed for three days before filming began.

Principal photography of "Little Shop of Horrors" was shot in two days and one night by Corman, with other material shot over two successive weekends.
He used three cameras at once and shot every scene with only one take.
As a result, some scenes run continuously for two or three minutes.
The total budget for the production was $27,000
"Little Shop of Horrors" is also noteworthy for featuring a young Jack Nicholson in a small role as Wilbur Force, the dentist's masochistic patient."
